LARRY ASKS BETHANY TO TALK — HE REVEALS THAT HIS MOTHER HAS AGREED TO LIVE WITH THEM!
Genre: Family Drama | Marriage Conflict | Emotional Reconciliation
Format: Cinematic Screenplay
Setting: Larry and Bethany’s House, Living Room, and Kitchen
SCENE 1 — LARRY AND BETHANY’S HOUSE — MORNING
The house is unusually quiet.
Bethany stands near the living room window, looking outside. Her expression is serious, and her mind is filled with unanswered questions about her future with Larry.
Larry walks into the room and notices her standing alone. He pauses for a moment before approaching her.
LARRY
Bethany, can we talk for a minute?
Bethany turns toward him but does not immediately respond.
BETHANY
What do you want to talk about, Larry?
Larry takes a deep breath. He knows that their relationship has been through difficult moments, and he wants her to listen before making another decision.
LARRY
I want us to sit down and talk about our future. I don’t want us to keep arguing or avoiding each other.
Bethany folds her arms across her chest.
BETHANY
You’ve said things like that before, Larry. Every time I think we’re finally going to understand each other, something happens again.
Larry lowers his eyes briefly.
LARRY
I know I’ve made mistakes. I’m not standing here pretending that everything between us has been perfect. But today, I want to talk to you honestly.
Bethany studies his face, wondering what he is about to say.
BETHANY
Then talk. I’m listening.
Larry gestures toward the sofa.
LARRY
Please, sit down with me.
Bethany hesitates before sitting on one end of the sofa. Larry takes the seat opposite her, leaving enough space between them. He looks directly into her eyes.
LARRY
I’ve been thinking about our situation, and I’ve also spoken to my mother. We discussed everything that has been happening in this house.
Bethany’s expression changes slightly.
BETHANY
You spoke to your mother about us?
LARRY
Yes. I told her that things have been difficult between us and that we need to find a way to move forward.
Bethany waits for him to continue.
SCENE 2 — THE LIVING ROOM — CONTINUOUS
Larry leans forward, resting his hands on his knees. His voice becomes softer.
LARRY
Bethany, my mother and I have talked about it, and we’ve agreed that we can all live together. She understands that you’re my wife, and she knows that we need to make decisions that work for everyone.
Bethany looks surprised. She had expected another argument, not a conversation about living together.
BETHANY
Wait a minute, Larry. Are you telling me that your mother has agreed to live with us peacefully?
LARRY
That’s exactly what I’m telling you. We talked about it, and she agreed that we should try to make things work. I don’t want you to feel like you’re living in this house without a voice.
Bethany looks down at her hands. She remembers the times she felt misunderstood and the moments when she believed Larry was not listening to her concerns.
BETHANY
Larry, you need to understand something. Living together isn’t just about sharing the same roof. We need respect, understanding, and boundaries.
Larry nods.
LARRY
I understand that. And I want us to establish those boundaries together. I don’t expect you to forget everything that has happened overnight.
BETHANY
What happens if your mother and I disagree about something? Are you going to take her side automatically?
Larry shakes his head.
LARRY
No, Bethany. I don’t want that anymore. If there’s a disagreement, we’ll sit down and discuss it. I want everyone in this family to feel respected.
Bethany remains quiet. Larry realizes that she needs more than promises.
LARRY
I’m asking you to give this arrangement a chance. Not because my mother wants it, and not because I’m forcing you. I want you to decide whether you’re comfortable with it.
Bethany takes a slow breath.
BETHANY
At least you’re talking to me instead of making the decision without me.
Larry gives her a small, hopeful smile.
LARRY
Because your opinion matters to me, Bethany.
SCENE 3 — BETHANY ASKS THE IMPORTANT QUESTION — LATE MORNING
Bethany stands and walks toward the window. Larry watches her, giving her time to think. After a few moments, she turns around.
BETHANY
Larry, I need to ask you something. Are you doing this because you genuinely want me to stay with you, or because you don’t want to deal with the problems that might come if we separate?
Larry immediately stands.
LARRY
Bethany, look at me.
She meets his eyes.
LARRY
I want you to stay with me because you’re important to me. I don’t want our marriage to become something we only talk about when we’re fighting. I want us to have a real chance to make things better.
Bethany’s expression softens, but uncertainty remains.
BETHANY
Then you have to show me that. I cannot build a peaceful home if I constantly have to defend my place in your life.
Larry moves a little closer but stops, respecting her space.
LARRY
You’re right. I have to prove it through my actions.
He pauses before speaking again.
LARRY
Bethany, I’m asking you to stay with me. My mother has agreed that we can all live together, and I want you to be part of this decision. Are you ready to live with me and give our family another chance?
Bethany looks at him for several seconds. His question is direct, and she understands that he is waiting for an honest answer.
BETHANY
I haven’t forgotten our problems, Larry. I still have concerns, and I need to know that things will be different this time.
Larry nods slowly.
LARRY
I won’t ask you to forget them. I only ask that we work through them together.
Bethany’s eyes become emotional.
BETHANY
If we do this, I want us to communicate. No more making important decisions behind my back. No more expecting me to accept everything without discussing it.
LARRY
I agree.
BETHANY
And your mother needs to understand that this is our home, too. We can welcome her without allowing every disagreement to become a family conflict.
LARRY
I’ll speak to her about that. We’ll make sure everyone understands the arrangement.
Bethany finally gives a small nod.
BETHANY
All right, Larry. I’m willing to stay with you and give this another chance.
Larry’s face brightens with relief.
LARRY
Are you serious, Bethany?
BETHANY
Yes, but don’t mistake my decision for saying that everything is already fixed. We still have work to do.
LARRY
I understand. And I’m grateful that you’re willing to try.
SCENE 4 — THE KITCHEN — MOMENTS LATER
Bethany walks into the kitchen to prepare some tea. Larry follows her a moment later. For the first time that morning, the atmosphere feels less tense.
He watches her place two cups on the counter.
LARRY
You know, I was nervous about talking to you this morning.
Bethany glances at him.
BETHANY
You? Nervous? That’s something I don’t hear every day.
Larry lets out a quiet laugh.
LARRY
I was afraid you would refuse to listen to me.
Bethany pours the tea.
BETHANY
I might have refused if you had started by telling me what I was supposed to do.
Larry accepts the cup she offers him.
LARRY
Then I guess I finally learned that asking you is better than deciding for you.
Bethany gives him a faint smile.
BETHANY
That’s a good beginning.
Larry becomes serious again.
LARRY
I’ll talk to my mother tonight. I’ll explain that we’re going to live together, but we need to respect each other’s space and decisions.
BETHANY
Good. I want her to feel welcome, Larry. I don’t want her to think I’m against her. I just want peace in my own home.
LARRY
And that’s what I want, too.
They sit at the kitchen table, sipping their tea. Neither of them knows exactly how the arrangement will work, but for the moment, they are willing to have the conversation they should have had earlier.
SCENE 5 — A NEW BEGINNING — AFTERNOON
Later that afternoon, Larry finds Bethany sitting in the living room again. He approaches her with a calmer expression.
LARRY
Bethany, thank you for hearing me out today.
She looks up from her phone.
BETHANY
You don’t have to thank me for having a conversation with my husband, Larry. That’s something we should always be able to do.
Larry sits beside her.
LARRY
Then let’s make a promise to each other. Whatever happens with my mother moving in, we’ll talk before things get out of hand.
Bethany considers his words.
BETHANY
I’ll promise to communicate, too. But we both have to keep that promise. It cannot be something we remember only when we’re afraid of losing each other.
LARRY
Agreed.
He extends his hand toward her. Bethany looks at it for a moment before taking it. Their hands meet gently.
There is no dramatic declaration that every problem has disappeared. Instead, there is a quiet understanding that rebuilding their relationship will require patience from both of them.
LARRY
So, we’re going to try again?
Bethany looks into his eyes.
BETHANY
Yes, Larry. We’re going to try again. But this time, I want us to build a home where everyone can speak honestly and still feel respected.
Larry nods.
LARRY
That’s the kind of home I want, too.
Bethany leans back against the sofa, looking slightly more relaxed than she did that morning. Larry remains beside her.
For the first time in a long while, they are not arguing about who is right or who is wrong. They are discussing what they can do differently.
BETHANY
One more thing, Larry.
LARRY
What’s that?
BETHANY
When your mother arrives, you need to make sure she knows about our agreement before any misunderstanding begins.
Larry smiles faintly.
LARRY
I’ll talk to her. I promise.
Bethany nods, accepting his answer for now.
The camera slowly pulls back as the two sit together in the living room. Their future remains uncertain, but both have taken a small step toward understanding.
END OF SCENE.
