The Phone Call
Bethany & Destiny — A Conversation That Changes Everything
SCENE 1 — THE PHONE CALL
The room is quiet. Bethany stands near the window, holding her phone tightly. She takes a deep breath before pressing Destiny’s name.
The phone rings. Once. Twice. Then Destiny answers.
DESTINY
Hey, Bethany. What’s wrong?
Bethany hesitates. Her expression changes as she struggles to find the right words.
BETHANY
Destiny, I need to ask you something.
DESTINY
Okay… what is it?
Bethany looks down at the floor.
BETHANY
Did you know about Brooke and Isaiah?
— long silence —
Destiny’s face becomes serious.
DESTINY
What exactly are you asking me?
BETHANY
You know what I mean.
Bethany’s voice becomes quieter.
BETHANY
I heard about the things they were doing. The adult things. And now I’m wondering if you already knew.
Destiny closes her eyes for a moment. She clearly wasn’t expecting the question.
SCENE 2 — DESTINY’S SILENCE
Bethany waits. The silence makes her more suspicious.
BETHANY
Destiny?
DESTINY
I’m here.
BETHANY
Then tell me the truth.
Destiny walks across her room and sits on the edge of her bed.
DESTINY
Bethany, I knew something was going on.
Bethany’s eyes widen.
BETHANY
So you did know?
DESTINY
Not everything.
BETHANY
That’s not what I asked.
Bethany’s voice carries frustration.
BETHANY
I asked if you knew.
Destiny takes a slow breath.
DESTINY
Yes. I knew there was something between them. I knew they were keeping things from everyone.
Bethany looks stunned.
BETHANY
And you never told me?
DESTINY
Because I wasn’t sure what was true.
Bethany turns away from the window.
BETHANY
You could have told me what you knew.
DESTINY
And then what?
Destiny’s voice becomes emotional.
DESTINY
I could have accused them without knowing the whole story. I didn’t want to make everything worse.
Bethany remains silent.
SCENE 3 — THE TRUTH
The tension between them grows.
BETHANY
But now you know.
DESTINY
I know more than I did before.
BETHANY
How much more?
Destiny looks down at her hands.
DESTINY
Enough to realize that this situation is much more complicated than I thought.
Bethany slowly sits down.
BETHANY
Why didn’t you come to me?
DESTINY
Because I was scared.
Bethany looks surprised by the answer.
BETHANY
Scared of what?
Destiny pauses.
DESTINY
Of what would happen if I told you.
— a long silence follows —
DESTINY
I knew people would get hurt. I knew friendships could fall apart. And honestly, I didn’t know who I could trust.
Bethany’s expression softens, but her disappointment remains.
BETHANY
You could have trusted me.
DESTINY
I know.
Destiny’s voice cracks slightly.
DESTINY
And that’s the part I regret.
SCENE 4 — BETHANY PUSHES FOR ANSWERS
Bethany wipes away a tear.
BETHANY
Did Brooke ever tell you herself?
Destiny thinks carefully before answering.
DESTINY
She told me enough to make me suspicious.
BETHANY
And Isaiah?
DESTINY
Isaiah never told me anything directly.
Bethany nods slowly.
BETHANY
So you knew something was happening, but you didn’t know the full truth.
DESTINY
Exactly.
BETHANY
Why did everyone keep quiet?
Destiny looks toward the window.
DESTINY
Because sometimes people convince themselves that staying silent is easier than facing the truth.
Bethany’s expression becomes serious.
BETHANY
But silence can hurt people too.
DESTINY
I know that now.
SCENE 5 — THE QUESTION THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING
Bethany takes another breath. Her voice becomes calm, but firm.
BETHANY
Destiny, I need you to answer one more thing.
DESTINY
What?
BETHANY
Did you ever cover for them?
Destiny freezes. For several seconds, she says nothing.
Bethany waits.
BETHANY
Destiny?
DESTINY
I never lied for them.
Bethany watches the phone in her hand.
DESTINY
But I did avoid questions.
BETHANY
Why?
DESTINY
Because I didn’t want to be involved.
Bethany shakes her head.
BETHANY
But you were involved the moment you knew something.
Destiny has no immediate answer. Her silence says more than words could.
SCENE 6 — DESTINY’S CONFESSION
Destiny finally speaks.
DESTINY
You’re right.
She takes a deep breath.
DESTINY
I should have said something earlier.
BETHANY
Yes, you should have.
DESTINY
I was trying to protect everyone.
BETHANY
Sometimes protecting people means telling them the truth.
Destiny looks down.
DESTINY
I understand that now.
Bethany’s anger begins to fade.
BETHANY
I’m not calling because I want to fight with you.
DESTINY
Then why did you call?
BETHANY
Because I needed to know whether I could trust you.
Destiny becomes quiet.
DESTINY
Can you?
Bethany pauses. She doesn’t answer immediately.
BETHANY
I don’t know yet.
The words hit Destiny hard.
SCENE 7 — A NEW REVELATION
Destiny suddenly remembers something. Her expression changes.
DESTINY
Bethany…
BETHANY
What?
DESTINY
There’s something else.
Bethany sits up straight.
BETHANY
What is it?
Destiny hesitates.
DESTINY
Before everything came out, Brooke asked me if anyone had been asking questions about her and Isaiah.
Bethany’s eyes widen.
BETHANY
She asked you that?
DESTINY
Yes.
BETHANY
When?
DESTINY
A few days before you found out.
Bethany slowly processes the information.
BETHANY
Why would she ask that?
DESTINY
I don’t know.
BETHANY
Did she seem scared?
Destiny nods.
DESTINY
Very.
Bethany looks toward the door. Suddenly, the situation feels much bigger than she imagined.
SCENE 8 — THE CALL ENDS
Bethany lowers her voice.
BETHANY
Destiny, I think there’s more to thi
