Larry Calls Sharra About Brooke’s Car

SCENE 1 — THE CALL

The evening is quiet.

Larry stands outside his house, phone pressed tightly against his ear. His expression is serious. He keeps looking toward the driveway, clearly frustrated by everything that has happened with Brooke.

After a long breath, he finally makes the call.

The phone rings.
Once.
Twice.
Sharra answers.

SHARRA
Larry? What’s going on?

Larry looks toward the house before speaking.

LARRY
I need you to do something for me.

Sharra immediately notices the seriousness in his voice.

SHARRA
What happened?

Larry pauses for a moment.

LARRY
I need you to take Brooke’s car back.

There is silence on the other end.

Sharra’s expression changes.

SHARRA
What?
LARRY
You heard me. Take the car back.

Sharra sits down slowly, trying to understand what Larry is saying.

SHARRA
Larry, why?
LARRY
Because Brooke is refusing to go to college.

Sharra closes her eyes for a moment.

SHARRA
Larry…
LARRY
I’ve already talked to her.

His voice becomes firmer.

LARRY
I tried explaining it to her calmly. I told her why college matters. I told her this isn’t about controlling her life.

Larry takes another breath.

LARRY
But she doesn’t want to listen.
SHARRA
And you think taking her car away is going to fix everything?
LARRY
I think she needs to understand that there are consequences.

Sharra remains quiet.

LARRY
Don’t give her the car back until she agrees to go.
SHARRA
No, Larry.

Larry looks surprised.

LARRY
What do you mean, no?
SHARRA
I mean I’m not doing that.
LARRY
Sharra, please don’t make this harder than it already is.
SHARRA
I’m not trying to make anything harder.

Her voice becomes emotional.

SHARRA
I’m thinking about Brooke.
LARRY
So am I.
SHARRA
Then don’t push her too hard.

Larry says nothing.

SHARRA
She’s already upset. You know that.

She takes a deep breath.

SHARRA
What if you push her so far that she does something stupid?

Larry’s expression suddenly changes.

LARRY
Sharra…
SHARRA
I’m serious.
SHARRA
She’s only eighteen, Larry.
LARRY
Exactly.
LARRY
She’s eighteen. She’s old enough to understand that her choices have consequences.
SHARRA
She’s also eighteen and still trying to figure out her life.
