AMBER RETURNS TO DAVE — THE ASSISTANT WARNING
A CINEMATIC SCREENPLAY
The house is unusually quiet.
Dave stands in the living room, looking through some documents on the table. His phone rests beside him.
He hears the front door open.
Dave looks up.
Amber walks inside.
She carries herself with determination. Her expression is serious, and there is no hesitation in her steps.
Dave immediately notices her mood.
DAVE
Amber?
Amber places her bag down and looks directly at him.
For a moment, neither of them speaks.
AMBER
We need to talk.
Dave slowly puts the documents down.
DAVE
About what?
Amber takes a breath.
She has clearly been thinking about this conversation before coming back.
AMBER
About your assistant.
Dave’s expression becomes cautious.
DAVE
What about her?
Amber steps closer.
Her voice is firm.
AMBER
I want you to call her.
Dave looks confused.
DAVE
Why?
AMBER
Because I want you to tell her not to come here anymore.
Dave stares at Amber.
DAVE
Amber, she works for me.
AMBER
I know she works for you.
Amber pauses.
AMBER
But she doesn’t need to come to our house.
Dave walks toward the window.
He tries to remain calm.
Amber watches him closely.
DAVE
You can’t decide who I can work with.
AMBER
I’m not asking you to fire her.
Dave turns around.
AMBER
I’m asking you to set a boundary.
Dave shakes his head.
DAVE
She’s my assistant. Sometimes she has to come here for work.
Amber’s expression becomes more serious.
AMBER
Then meet her somewhere else.
Dave looks at her.
DAVE
Why is this suddenly such a big issue?
Amber folds her arms.
AMBER
Because I don’t want her coming into our home anymore.
A tense silence fills the room.
Dave takes a slow breath.
DAVE
You came back here just to tell me this?
AMBER
Yes.
Her answer is immediate.
AMBER
And I want you to take me seriously.
Dave picks up his phone from the table.
Amber watches him.
DAVE
What exactly do you want me to say to her?
Amber looks directly at him.
AMBER
Tell her she is not welcome here anymore.
Dave hesitates.
DAVE
Amber…
AMBER
No, Dave.
She raises her voice slightly.
AMBER
I am serious.
Dave looks frustrated.
DAVE
You are making this more complicated than it needs to be.
Amber shakes her head.
AMBER
I’m trying to prevent another problem.
Dave looks down at his phone.
He does not make the call yet.
DAVE
And what happens if I don’t call her?
Amber takes a breath.
Her voice becomes firm and controlled.
AMBER
Then I’ll handle it myself.
Dave looks up.
DAVE
What does that mean?
Amber answers without hesitation.
AMBER
If she comes to our house after I’ve told you to stop her, I will call the police.
Dave’s eyes widen slightly.
The atmosphere becomes tense.
Dave places the phone back on the table.
DAVE
You would really do that?
AMBER
If she comes here after being told not to, yes.
Dave shakes his head.
DAVE
That’s extreme.
AMBER
Maybe you think it is.
Amber takes another step toward him.
AMBER
But this is our home, Dave.
Dave remains silent.
Amber’s voice softens slightly, but her determination remains.
AMBER
I don’t want arguments. I don’t want drama. I just want her to understand that she shouldn’t come here.
Dave looks at Amber for several seconds.
DAVE
You could have talked to me without threatening a police case.
Amber looks away briefly.
AMBER
I’ve tried talking.
She looks back at him.
AMBER
This time, I need you to listen.
Dave sits on the edge of the sofa.
Amber remains standing across from him.
The anger between them has slowly turned into a serious conversation.
DAVE
You know I can’t control everything she does.
AMBER
I know.
DAVE
Then why are you putting this responsibility on me?
Amber sits down.
AMBER
Because you’re the one who can tell her clearly.
Dave studies her expression.
DAVE
And if she refuses?
Amber pauses.
AMBER
Then we’ll deal with that situation when it happens.
Dave nods slowly.
DAVE
You really don’t want her here.
AMBER
No.
She looks at him seriously.
AMBER
I don’t.
Dave picks up his phone again.
This time, he unlocks the screen.
Amber watches silently.
Dave searches for his assistant’s contact.
His finger stops above the call button.
He looks toward Amber.
DAVE
Are you sure this is what you want?
Amber nods.
AMBER
Yes.
Dave presses the call button.
The phone begins ringing.
Amber stands quietly nearby.
Dave waits.
After several rings, he lowers the phone slightly.
DAVE
She’s not answering.
Amber looks disappointed.
AMBER
Then send her a message.
Dave nods.
He opens the messaging screen.
He begins typing.
DAVE
I’ll tell her not to come to the house unless there’s an important reason.
Amber considers his words.
AMBER
Make it clear.
Dave looks at her.
DAVE
I’ll make it clear.
He continues typing.
The message has been sent.
Dave places his phone on the table.
Amber finally relaxes a little.
DAVE
There.
Amber nods.
AMBER
Thank you.
Dave looks at her.
DAVE
I still don’t agree with the way you handled this.
Amber remains quiet.
DAVE
But I understand that you don’t want her coming into our home.
Amber looks at him.
AMBER
That’s all I wanted you to understand.
A brief silence follows.
Dave leans back.
DAVE
Let’s not turn this into another fight.
Amber nods.
AMBER
I don’t want to fight with you either.
For the first time since she arrived, the tension begins to fade.
Amber picks up her bag.
She prepares to leave the room.
Dave watches her.
DAVE
Amber.
She stops.
DAVE
If she comes here again, don’t immediately call the police.
Amber turns toward him.
AMBER
Then make sure she doesn’t.
Dave nods.
DAVE
I’ll talk to her again if I need to.
Amber looks at him for a moment.
AMBER
That’s all I’m asking.
She walks toward the hallway.
Dave remains seated.
His phone suddenly vibrates on the table.
Dave looks down.
A new message has arrived.
His expression changes.
He picks up the phone and reads it.
We do not see the message.
Dave slowly looks toward the hallway where Amber disappeared.
The peaceful atmosphere is gone again.
Something has changed.
DAVE
This isn’t going to be that simple.
The camera holds on Dave’s concerned expression.
The phone remains in his hand.
