SCENE 1 — OUTSIDE THE COURTROOM

The courthouse hallway is unusually quiet.

Sharra stands near the courtroom doors, holding a folder tightly against her chest.

She looks nervous, but determined.

Beside her stands Mr. Burger, dressed formally and looking uncomfortable.

Sharra takes a deep breath.

SHARRA
Mr. Burger, I just need you to tell the truth in there.

MR. BURGER
I will tell the truth, Sharra. Nothing more.

SHARRA
That’s all I’m asking.

She looks toward the courtroom doors.

SHARRA
My mother needs someone to speak for her today.

Mr. Burger doesn’t respond. His expression remains serious.

Suddenly, the courtroom doors open.

COURT OFFICER
They’re ready for you.

Sharra gestures for Mr. Burger to follow.

They enter together.

SCENE 2 — INSIDE THE COURTROOM

The courtroom is packed.

The judge sits behind the bench, reviewing several documents.

Bethany is seated on one side of the courtroom.

She notices Sharra walking in with Mr. Burger.

BETHANY
Who is that with Sharra?

Sharra walks toward the front of the courtroom.

Mr. Burger follows.

JUDGE
Ms. Sharra, I understand you have brought a witness today.

SHARRA
Yes, Your Honor.

She looks at Mr. Burger.

SHARRA
I brought Mr. Burger here to testify for my mother.

Mr. Burger slowly steps forward.

Sharra looks relieved.

For a moment, everything seems to be going according to plan.

JUDGE
Mr. Burger, please take your place.

Mr. Burger walks forward.

Sharra watches him carefully.

She has no idea what he is about to say.

SCENE 3 — THE TESTIMONY BEGINS

Mr. Burger stands before the judge.

The courtroom becomes completely silent.

JUDGE
Mr. Burger, you understand the importance of telling the truth in this courtroom?

MR. BURGER
Yes, Your Honor.

Sharra gives him an encouraging look.

SHARRA
That’s why I brought you here.

Mr. Burger turns toward her.

His expression suddenly becomes serious.

MR. BURGER
And that’s why I’m going to tell the truth.

Sharra smiles faintly.

But then Mr. Burger turns back toward the judge.

MR. BURGER
Your Honor, I don’t believe Sharra’s mother is innocent.

Sharra’s smile disappears. Her eyes widen.

SHARRA
What?

JUDGE
Ms. Sharra, please remain quiet while the witness speaks.

SHARRA
You said you were going to help my mother!

MR. BURGER
I came here because I believe the court deserves to know what actually happened.

SCENE 4 — MR. BURGER’S SHOCKING STATEMENT

The judge leans forward.

JUDGE
What exactly are you saying, Mr. Burger?

Mr. Burger takes a breath.

MR. BURGER
I’m saying that Sharra’s mother is guilty of what she’s accused of.

A gasp spreads through the courtroom.

Sharra stares at him.

SHARRA
No.

MR. BURGER
I’m sorry, Sharra.

SHARRA
You came here because I trusted you!

JUDGE
Order in the courtroom!

SHARRA
You told me you would stand beside my mother!

MR. BURGER
I told you I would tell the truth.

SHARRA
You’re betraying my family!

Bethany slowly stands.

BETHANY
Sharra, calm down.

SHARRA
Stay out of this!

SCENE 5 — SHARRA CONFRONTS MR. BURGER

Sharra turns back toward Mr. Burger.

Her anger is obvious.

SHARRA
You should be ashamed of yourself!

MR. BURGER
You asked me to come here and speak honestly.

SHARRA
I asked you to help my mother!

MR. BURGER
And I can’t lie for anyone.

Sharra shakes her head.

SHARRA
You knew exactly what you were doing!

MR. BURGER
I knew I had to tell the court what I believed was true.

JUDGE
Ms. Sharra, this is your final warning.

Bethany watches from the side.

BETHANY
This is getting completely out of control.

Sharra hears her and turns around.

SHARRA
What did you say?

BETHANY
I said you’re making everything worse.

SHARRA
You have no idea what I’m going through!

BETHANY
And you have no right to attack everybody because you’re angry!

SHARRA
Don’t talk about my family!

SCENE 6 — THE ARGUMENT EXPLODES

Bethany steps forward.

BETHANY
Then stop blaming everybody else!

SHARRA
You always have something to say!

BETHANY
Because somebody needs to tell you the truth!

SHARRA
You think you’re better than everybody?

BETHANY
No. I just don’t want this courtroom turned into a shouting match.

SHARRA
Then mind your business!

BETHANY
You brought Mr. Burger here yourself!

Sharra freezes.

BETHANY
You expected him to say whatever you wanted.

SHARRA
That’s not true!

BETHANY
Then why are you angry because he told the judge what he believes?

SHARRA
Because he promised my family!

BETHANY
A promise doesn’t mean someone has to lie.

The words hit Sharra hard.

SHARRA
You don’t know anything about loyalty!

BETHANY
Don’t question my loyalty.

SCENE 7 — THE COURTROOM ERUPTS

The argument suddenly becomes louder.

SHARRA
You always do this!

BETHANY
Because you never listen!

SHARRA
Get away from me!

BETHANY
Then stop coming after me!

Sharra gestures angrily.

Bethany responds.

The court officer quickly steps between them.

COURT OFFICER
Ladies, step back!

The judge strikes the gavel repeatedly.

JUDGE
ORDER!

Everyone goes silent.

JUDGE
This is a courtroom, not a place for personal arguments.

JUDGE
Both of you need to take your seats immediately.

Sharra looks away.

Bethany takes a deep breath.

They reluctantly return to their seats.

Mr. Burger remains standing at the witness area.

SCENE 8 — THE JUDGE ADDRESSES SHARRA

The judge looks directly at Sharra.

JUDGE
Ms. Sharra, I understand that you are upset by the testimony.

Sharra looks down.

JUDGE
But you cannot allow your emotions to interfere with the proceedings.

SHARRA
Yes, Your Honor.

The judge then looks toward Mr. Burger.

JUDGE
Mr. Burger, continue with your testimony.

MR. BURGER
Yes, Your Honor.

Sharra looks at him again.

Her anger has turned into disappointment.

SHARRA
I trusted you.

MR. BURGER
I know.

MR. BURGER
And I’m sorry that my testimony hurts you.

Sharra doesn’t respond.

She looks away.

SCENE 9 — BETHANY AND SHARRA’S LAST EXCHANGE

Bethany looks toward Sharra.

For a moment, neither woman speaks.

BETHANY
Sharra.

Sharra looks at her.

BETHANY
I wasn’t trying to hurt you.

SHARRA
But you did.

Bethany looks down.

BETHANY
I know.

Sharra wipes her eyes and takes a deep breath.

SHARRA
You could have stayed out of it.

BETHANY
Maybe I should have.

They stare at each other.

The anger hasn’t completely disappeared.

But the courtroom is finally quiet.

SCENE 10 — THE UNEXPECTED TURN

Mr. Burger finishes his testimony.

He steps away from the witness area.

Sharra watches him walk past.

She looks deeply disappointed.

The judge closes the folder.

JUDGE
The court will take the testimony under consideration.

Everyone waits.

JUDGE
There are several issues that still require clarification.

Sharra looks up.

For the first time, she sees a small possibility that the case isn’t finished.

Bethany watches her quietly.

Mr. Burger stands near the courtroom doors.

He looks back at Sharra.

Their eyes meet.

Sharra doesn’t say anything.

Mr. Burger slowly lowers his head.

The courtroom remains silent.

SCENE 11 — OUTSIDE THE COURTROOM

Later, Sharra walks out into the hallway.

Bethany follows behind her.

BETHANY
Sharra, wait.

Sharra stops and turns around.

SHARRA
What?

BETHANY
I know you’re angry.

SHARRA
You think?

Bethany sighs.

BETHANY
I just don’t want things to get worse.

SHARRA
Then don’t make them worse.

Bethany nods.

BETHANY
Okay.

A long silence follows.

Mr. Burger exits the courtroom.

Sharra notices him and looks away.

MR. BURGER
Sharra.

She doesn’t answer.

MR. BURGER
Can I explain?

SHARRA
You already explained everything in there.

MR. BURGER
I did what I thought was right.

SHARRA
And now my family has to deal with the consequences.

MR. BURGER
I understand.

Sharra turns away.

Bethany looks between them.

Nobody says another word.

The courthouse doors close behind them.

The tension remains.
