A Cinematic Screenplay

GENRE: Emotional Drama • Family Conflict • Anger • Betrayal • Suspense

SCENE 1: AN UNEXPECTED VISIT

EXT. SHAYLA’S HOUSE — FRONT DRIVEWAY — AFTERNOON

The afternoon sun shines over Shayla’s quiet neighborhood. A gentle breeze moves through the trees as a black car pulls into the driveway.

Danisha steps out, holding her handbag. Serious and determined, she walks toward the front door. Inside, Shayla is enjoying a peaceful afternoon, unaware that a painful family dispute is about to reach her doorstep.

A sudden knock interrupts the silence.

SHAYLAWho could that be at this hour?

Shayla opens the door and finds Danisha standing there with a cold, determined look.

SHAYLADanisha? What are you doing here?
DANISHAWe need to talk, Shayla. And I don’t want you to pretend you don’t understand why I’m here.
SHAYLAIf you have something to say, then say it. I don’t have time for unnecessary drama.
DANISHATrust me, Shayla. After what I’m about to tell you, you’ll have plenty to think about.

Shayla reluctantly lets her enter, unaware that this conversation will become a confrontation neither woman will easily forget.

SCENE 2: DANISHA MAKES HER DEMAND

INT. SHAYLA’S HOUSE — LIVING ROOM — CONTINUOUS

Danisha places her handbag on a chair. Shayla folds her arms, waiting impatiently.

SHAYLAYou came all the way here just to make mysterious statements? Tell me what you want.
DANISHAI’m here because of Kai.
SHAYLAWhat about Kai? Leave him out of whatever problem you have with me.
DANISHAThat’s exactly what I’m trying to do. I want you to keep Kai with you.

Shayla stares at her, struggling to understand.

SHAYLAExcuse me? What did you just say?
DANISHAYou heard me. Keep Kai with you, Shayla. Nobody wants him with them, so you might as well take responsibility for him.

The words hang heavily in the air. Shayla takes a slow step forward, disbelief turning into anger.

SHAYLAYou came into my house, looked me in the eyes, and told me that nobody wants Kai?
DANISHAI’m telling you the truth. Don’t get upset just because you don’t like hearing it.
SHAYLAYou don’t get to walk into my home and decide what happens to Kai as if he’s some problem you can pass from one person to another.
DANISHAI’m here to make something clear. You need to keep Kai, and that’s the end of the discussion.

SCENE 3: ANTHONY’S NAME CHANGES EVERYTHING

INT. SHAYLA’S HOUSE — LIVING ROOM — MOMENTS LATER

Shayla moves toward the window, trying to collect her thoughts. Then she turns back to Danisha.

SHAYLAThere’s something you seem to be forgetting. Kai is Anthony’s son.
DANISHAI know exactly who Kai’s father is.
SHAYLAThen why are you standing here telling me that nobody wants him? Have you even considered what Anthony would say if he heard you talking like this?
DANISHADon’t bring Anthony into this conversation.
SHAYLAHow can I not bring him into it? He’s Kai’s father! This isn’t just about you and me.
DANISHAAnthony has his own problems, Shayla. You cannot expect everyone to rearrange their lives because of Kai.
SHAYLANobody is asking you to rearrange your life. I’m asking you to stop speaking about an innocent child as if he doesn’t matter.

Danisha briefly looks uncomfortable, but quickly hardens her expression.

DANISHAYou keep Kai. I don’t want to argue about it anymore.
SHAYLAAnd what happens if I refuse?
DANISHAThen you’ll have to explain why you’re making this more difficult than it needs to be.
SHAYLANo, Danisha. You expected me to stay quiet.

The room falls silent. Both women know the conversation has reached a dangerous turning point.

SCENE 4: SHAYLA’S PATIENCE RUNS OUT

INT. SHAYLA’S HOUSE — LIVING ROOM — CONTINUOUS

Danisha picks up her handbag, apparently ready to leave. Before reaching the door, she turns around with one final remark.

DANISHAMaybe you should simply accept the situation. At least Kai would be with someone who has already been dealing with all this drama.
SHAYLADon’t you dare speak about Kai like that again.
DANISHAOr what? Are you going to make another scene? Because that’s exactly what you seem to be good at.
SHAYLAYou have no idea what I’ve been through. You don’t know how much I’ve tried to keep things together, and you certainly don’t get to come here and judge me.
DANISHARespect is earned, Shayla. And after everything that’s happened, you should be the last person demanding it.

Shayla’s patience finally gives way.

SHAYLAGet out of my house.
DANISHAKeep Kai, Shayla. Nobody else wants him.

The words ignite Shayla’s anger. In a sudden outburst, Shayla strikes Danisha. Danisha stumbles backward, shocked. For several seconds, neither woman speaks.

DANISHADid you just hit me?
SHAYLAYou should have stopped talking about Kai!
DANISHASo that’s your excuse? You think you can put your hands on me because you don’t like what I said?
DANISHADon’t come any closer!

The argument has crossed a line neither woman can take back.

SCENE 5: THE CONFRONTATION GETS WORSE

INT. SHAYLA’S HOUSE — FRONT HALLWAY — CONTINUOUS

Danisha touches her cheek, her eyes fixed angrily on Shayla.

DANISHAI came here to have a conversation with you. I didn’t come here to be attacked!
SHAYLAAnd I didn’t invite you here to insult me and Kai!
DANISHANobody forced you to do anything, Shayla. You made that choice yourself.
SHAYLAYou don’t understand what your words mean to me.
DANISHAThen explain it! Explain why you think you’re the only person allowed to have feelings in this situation.
SHAYLAI never said that!
DANISHAThen stop acting like it!

Danisha moves toward the door but pauses with her hand on the handle.

DANISHAYou need to understand something, Shayla. This isn’t over.
SHAYLAWhat is that supposed to mean?
DANISHAAsk Anthony.
SHAYLAWhat does Anthony have to do with this?

Danisha says nothing. She walks outside, leaving Shayla frozen in the hallway. Shayla is no longer thinking only about Kai—she is wondering what Anthony might be hiding.

SCENE 6: ANTHONY RECEIVES A DISTURBING CALL

INT. ANTHONY’S HOUSE — HOME OFFICE — LATE AFTERNOON

Anthony sits behind his desk, reviewing documents. His phone rings. Danisha’s name appears on the screen, and he answers immediately.

ANTHONYDanisha? What’s going on?
DANISHAAnthony, I need to talk to you.
ANTHONYWhat happened?
DANISHAI went to see Shayla.
ANTHONYYou went to see Shayla? Why?
DANISHABecause of Kai. I wanted to make it clear that she needed to keep him with her.
ANTHONYDanisha, why would you go there and start another argument?
DANISHAI didn’t go there to fight! I went there to talk, but she wouldn’t listen.
ANTHONYWhat exactly did you say to her?
DANISHAI told her that she should keep Kai. Then things got heated.

Anthony stands and walks toward the window. Danisha’s voice becomes quieter.

DANISHAShe hit me, Anthony.
ANTHONYShe did what?
DANISHAYou heard me. Shayla hit me after we argued about Kai.
ANTHONYI need to speak to Shayla.
DANISHAOf course you do. You always have something to discuss with Shayla.
ANTHONYThis isn’t about taking sides. I need to understand what happened.

Danisha ends the call. Anthony lowers his phone, wondering why she insisted that Shayla keep Kai without consulting him first. He grabs his keys and heads out.

SCENE 7: ANTHONY CONFRONTS SHAYLA

EXT. SHAYLA’S HOUSE — EARLY EVENING

Anthony’s black car pulls into the driveway. He walks to the entrance and knocks firmly. Shayla opens the door, surprised to see him.

SHAYLAAnthony? What are you doing here?
ANTHONYWe need to talk.
SHAYLALet me guess. Danisha called you.
ANTHONYShe told me what happened.
ANTHONYShe said you hit her.
SHAYLAAnd did she tell you why?
SHAYLAShe came here and told me to keep Kai because nobody wants him! She stood in my house and spoke about your son as if he were a burden!
ANTHONYKai is my son. I know that.
SHAYLAThen why is Danisha acting as if she has the right to decide what happens to him?
ANTHONYI don’t know everything that was said between you two. But I do know that hitting her wasn’t the answer.
SHAYLAI was angry.
ANTHONYI understand that you’re angry. But you can’t let your anger decide what you do next.
SHAYLAThen prove it, Anthony. Tell me why Danisha thinks she can make decisions about Kai without even speaking to his father.

Anthony falls silent. Shayla studies his face, growing suspicious.

SHAYLAIs there something you’re not telling me?
ANTHONYThere’s something you need to know, Shayla. Something about this entire situation.
SHAYLAThen tell me.
ANTHONYI will. But you need to promise me that you’ll hear the whole story before you make any more decisions.
SHAYLAWhat story, Anthony?
ANTHONYThe reason Danisha came here today wasn’t as simple as you think.

Before Anthony can explain, his phone rings again. Danisha’s name appears on the screen.

SHAYLAAnswer it.
ANTHONYDanisha, I’m with Shayla right now. Whatever you have to say, say it.

A long silence follows. Then Danisha speaks, her voice low and urgent.

DANISHAAnthony, don’t tell her anything until you know the truth.

Anthony’s face loses its color. Shayla stares at him in disbelief.

SHAYLAThe truth about what?

Neither Anthony nor Danisha answers. Shayla realizes that the argument over Kai may have been only the beginning of a much bigger family secret.
