1. The Unexpected Knock
Sharra had almost finished getting ready for bed when someone knocked on her front door. It was late enough that she immediately felt uneasy. She had not invited anyone over, and she was not expecting a delivery.
When she looked through the glass beside the door, she recognized the person standing outside. It was Dre, her ex-husband.
For several seconds, Sharra did not move. Their marriage had ended with painful arguments and broken trust. She had worked hard to build a quiet life after their separation, and seeing Dre standing there suddenly made all those old memories return.
“Sharra, please,” Dre said through the door. “I just need to talk to you.”
She opened the door only slightly.
“Why are you here this late?”
Dre looked exhausted. He told her he had been struggling badly, that he felt overwhelmed, and that he had nowhere safe to go.
“I am not asking you to take me back,” he said. “I just need somewhere to stay for two days. I promise I will sleep on the couch. I will not cause problems.”
Sharra knew letting him inside was risky. Still, seeing him standing there asking for help made her hesitate.
2. Two Days, He Promised
Eventually, Sharra stepped aside.
“Two days,” she said firmly. “And you respect my boundaries.”
“I will,” Dre replied.
At first, everything seemed normal. Dre sat quietly in the living room. Sharra gave him a blanket and some water, then returned to her room. He thanked her repeatedly.
But as the evening continued, Sharra noticed small details that bothered her.
Dre asked where she kept important papers. He asked whether she still had valuable jewelry. He even asked whether the back door was usually locked.
“Why are you asking me all this?” Sharra asked.
Dre quickly smiled.

In the bedroom, Sharra suddenly woke up.

She sat up.
“Dre?”

“Dre, what are you doing?” she asked.
He appeared from the other side of the room holding some of her belongings.

“You should not have come out,” he said.
Sharra moved toward her phone.
Dre noticed.
“Don’t,” he warned.
The atmosphere inside the house changed instantly. Sharra realized she had trusted the wrong person.
4. The Night She Could Not Escape
What happened next became a terrifying struggle. Sharra tried to protect herself and reach her phone, but Dre stopped her.
He restrained her and prevented her from calling for help. He also took steps to keep her from getting the attention of anyone outside.
