Wayne and Tamara — An Unexpected Reaction

WAYNE AND TAMARA

An Unexpected Reaction

SCENE 1 — OUTSIDE TAMARA’S HOUSE

The afternoon is calm. Wayne walks toward Tamara with a warm smile. He is carrying a beautiful bouquet of flowers, hoping to surprise her.

WAYNE

Why do you look so beautiful today?

Tamara looks at Wayne without smiling. Her expression immediately tells him that something is different.

Wayne gently holds out the bouquet.

WAYNE

I brought these for you. I thought they might make you smile.

Tamara looks down at the flowers but does not take them.

TAMARA

Wayne, what are you doing?

WAYNE

I’m giving you flowers. I just wanted to do something nice for you.

Wayne’s smile slowly disappears when he realizes Tamara is not reacting the way he expected.

TAMARA

You really think flowers are going to change everything?

WAYNE

That’s not what I meant. I just wanted to show you that I still care.

Tamara shakes her head. She seems frustrated by the situation.

SCENE 2 — THE UNEXPECTED REACTION

Wayne holds the bouquet toward Tamara one more time.

WAYNE

Please. Just take them.

Tamara looks at the flowers, then looks directly at Wayne.

Suddenly, Tamara becomes extremely angry and slaps Wayne.

Everything becomes silent. Wayne freezes in shock, still holding the bouquet.

WAYNE

Tamara… why did you do that?

TAMARA

Because I don’t want you pretending everything is okay.

Wayne takes a step back. He is clearly surprised by her reaction.

WAYNE

I wasn’t pretending.

TAMARA

Then stop acting like one bouquet of flowers can fix what happened between us.

Wayne looks down at the bouquet. The romantic gesture has suddenly turned into a serious confrontation.

SCENE 3 — WAYNE TRIES TO UNDERSTAND

Wayne takes a deep breath. Instead of responding angrily, he decides to remain calm.

WAYNE

If you’re angry with me, tell me why.

TAMARA

Because you keep showing up when you want to feel better about yourself.

WAYNE

That’s not fair.

TAMARA

Maybe it isn’t. But that’s how I feel.

Wayne listens carefully.

WAYNE

I’m not going to fight with you. If you’re upset, I want to understand why.

Tamara looks at him, surprised that he is not arguing back.

TAMARA

You really want to know?

WAYNE

Yes. I’m listening.

SCENE 4 — TAMARA OPENS UP

Tamara takes a deep breath and begins explaining everything that has been bothering her.

TAMARA

I thought you understood me.

WAYNE

I thought I did too.

TAMARA

But lately, it feels like you don’t know what I need at all.

Wayne slowly nods.

WAYNE

Maybe you’re right.

Tamara looks surprised by his response.

TAMARA

You’re not going to argue?

WAYNE

No. Sometimes listening is more important than being right.

Tamara’s anger begins to fade. She looks toward the flowers again.

TAMARA

Then why did you bring me flowers?

WAYNE

Because I wanted you to know that I was thinking about you.

Wayne pauses before continuing.

WAYNE

But I realize now that I should have asked how you were feeling before assuming flowers were what you needed.

SCENE 5 — A CHANGE IN THE MOOD

The tension between them begins to decrease.

WAYNE

I’m sorry that I upset you.

Tamara looks down for a moment.

TAMARA

I shouldn’t have slapped you.

WAYNE

I appreciate you saying that.

Tamara slowly walks toward the table where Wayne has placed the flowers.

She picks up the bouquet and holds it quietly.

TAMARA

Are those really for me?

WAYNE

They were.

TAMARA

Were?

WAYNE

I don’t want to give you something if you’re not ready to accept it.

Tamara looks at the flowers thoughtfully.

SCENE 6 — WHAT HAPPENS NOW?

TAMARA

So what happens now?

WAYNE

Now we stop pretending that everything is simple.

Wayne looks directly at her.

WAYNE

If we have problems, we talk about them.

TAMARA

And if we can’t fix them?

WAYNE

Then we’ll have to accept that too.

Tamara nods slowly.

TAMARA

At least you’re finally being honest.

WAYNE

I’m trying.

SCENE 7 — A NEW BEGINNING?

The two stand quietly, unsure about what will happen next.

Tamara holds the bouquet in her hands.

TAMARA

Thank you.

WAYNE

For the flowers?

TAMARA

For listening.

Wayne gives her a small smile.

WAYNE

You’re welcome.

A quiet moment passes between them. The argument has not completely disappeared, but both seem more willing to communicate.

WAYNE

Can we start over?

Tamara thinks carefully before answering.

TAMARA

Maybe.

WAYNE

I’ll take maybe.

Tamara gives a small smile. The camera slowly pulls away as the two remain standing together.

Will Wayne and Tamara truly be able to start over, or will their unresolved problems tear them apart again?

TO BE CONTINUED…

Wayne expected a smile when he brought Tamara flowers. Instead, his gesture led to an unexpected confrontation and an important conversation.

What will Wayne do next?
