The ICU doors suddenly closed behind Bethany. Larry stood frozen in the hospital hallway, staring through the glass as doctors rushed around her bed.
SCENE 1 — ICU HALLWAY
The hospital hallway is quiet except for the sound of monitors and hurried footsteps.
DOCTOR
Larry, I need you to understand something.
LARRY
What are you saying?
DOCTOR
Bethany’s condition is not going to return to normal immediately. She’s going to need continued medical care. There may be times when she has to come back to the hospital again and again.
LARRY
Again and again?
DOCTOR
Yes. And right now, we’ve decided to keep her admitted in the ICU.
LARRY
But she was supposed to get better.
DOCTOR
We’re doing everything we can.
SCENE 2 — THE BLAME
Larry walks away from the doctor and sees Charlatoo sitting in the waiting area.
LARRY
Charlatoo, this is all because of you.
CHARLATOO
Because of me?
LARRY
You were the one who told Bethany she should get that surgery!
CHARLATOO
I never wanted this to happen.
LARRY
But you gave her that advice!
Charlatoo looks toward the ICU, visibly emotional.
CHARLATOO
I was only trying to help her.
LARRY
Help her? Look where we are now! She’s in the ICU!
SCENE 3 — CHARLATOO EXPLAINS
Charlatoo lowers her voice.
CHARLATOO
I told her to consider the surgery because I thought it could give her a better chance.
LARRY
But you didn’t know what was going to happen afterward.
CHARLATOO
Neither did anyone else.
CHARLATOO
I wasn’t Bethany’s doctor. I gave her an opinion. The final decision was hers.
Larry looks down, suddenly unsure of what to say.
SCENE 4 — THE DOCTOR RETURNS
DOCTOR
Larry, I understand that you’re upset, but right now Bethany needs calm around her.
LARRY
Doctor, is she going to be okay?
DOCTOR
We’re hoping for improvement, but I don’t want to give you a promise I can’t guarantee.
LARRY
So she really has to keep coming back here?
DOCTOR
There’s a strong possibility that she’ll need repeated hospital visits and continued observation.
LARRY
And the ICU?
DOCTOR
For now, that’s where she needs to be.
SCENE 5 — LARRY REGRETS HIS WORDS
Larry sits down in the waiting area. His anger slowly disappears, replaced by fear.
LARRY
Maybe I shouldn’t have blamed you.
CHARLATOO
You were scared.
LARRY
I’m still scared.
CHARLATOO
Then don’t waste your energy blaming people. Be there for her.
Larry looks toward Bethany’s room and slowly nods.
SCENE 6 — BETHANY’S ROOM
Larry finally enters the ICU under the doctor’s supervision and walks toward Bethany’s bed.
LARRY
Bethany… I’m here.
He sits beside her bed and gently holds her hand.
LARRY
I’m sorry. I don’t care how many times we have to come back to this hospital. I’m not leaving you alone.
The monitor continues making steady sounds as Larry remains beside her.
SCENE 7 — THE UNEXPECTED DISCOVERY
Later that night, the hospital becomes quiet.
A nurse suddenly enters the room and checks the monitor. Her expression changes.
NURSE
Doctor!
LARRY
What happened?
The doctor quickly enters and checks Bethany’s condition.
LARRY
Doctor, what’s happening?
The doctor looks at the monitor, then turns toward Larry.
DOCTOR
Larry…
LARRY
What?
DOCTOR
There’s something we need to tell you about Bethany’s condition. And it may change everything we’ve been expecting.
Larry freezes.
The ICU doors close.
