The evening had begun quietly. Warm lights glowed along the hallway. Amber sat beside Dave, holding a small black ring box in her hands. She had imagined this moment many times and hoped Dave would be happy.

Dave noticed that Amber was unusually quiet.

Dave “You’ve been looking at me like you have something important to say. Is everything okay?”

Amber took a deep breath and opened the little black box. A beautiful sparkling engagement ring rested inside.

Chapter 2: Amber Asks the Question

Amber “Dave, I care about you so much. I can imagine spending my whole life with you. Will you marry me?”

Dave stared at the ring in complete shock. He could not believe Amber had just proposed to him. He leaned back, trying to understand what had happened.

Dave “I understand. I’m sorry, Amber.”

Amber walked toward the hallway. Dave remained standing beside the table, watching her leave.

At the doorway, Amber turned around one last time.

Amber “Next time, tell someone the truth before they put their heart on the table.”

The door closed softly behind her. Dave stood alone, realizing that he could have handled everything differently.
