Scene 1: The Truth Behind the DNA Test
The morning began like any other, but Amber had no idea that within minutes, her entire world would begin to fall apart. She stood in front of the mirror in her bedroom, adjusting her bright lime-green dress while checking her phone for messages. She had been acting strangely for days, avoiding difficult conversations and changing the subject whenever Anthony’s name came up.
Meanwhile, Dave sat in his car outside the medical center, staring at the appointment confirmation on his phone. He had spent the last several days trying to convince himself that there had to be a reasonable explanation for everything he had discovered.
There was only one way to find out the truth.
He stepped out of the car, adjusted his blue suit, and walked toward the entrance. Inside the building, a doctor was waiting for him with a folder containing the DNA test results.
Doctor: “Good morning, Mr. Dave. Thank you for coming in. Your results are ready.”
Dave swallowed nervously.
Dave: “Before you tell me anything, I need you to understand something. I don’t want anyone protecting me from the truth. Whatever those results say, I want to hear it.”
The doctor nodded and opened the folder.
Doctor: “The DNA comparison has been completed. The laboratory has confirmed that Anthony’s DNA matches the sample in question.”
Dave stared at her. For a few seconds, he couldn’t speak.
Dave: “You’re telling me Anthony is a match?”
Doctor: “Yes. According to the report, the samples match.”
Dave lowered his head, trying to process the words. Amber’s nervous behavior, her unexplained phone calls, and the way she became defensive whenever he mentioned Anthony all returned to his mind.
Dave: “Where is Amber?”
Doctor: “She is here. She arrived a few minutes ago.”
Dave took the DNA report from the desk.
Dave: “Good. I want her to hear this from me.”
He walked toward the waiting area. He wasn’t going to leave that building without answers.
Scene 2: Amber Walks Into the Trap
Amber entered the medical office expecting a routine conversation. The moment she saw Dave standing beside the doctor with a document in his hand, her smile disappeared.
Amber: “Dave? What are you doing here?”
He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he held up the report.
Dave: “That’s a good question, Amber. Maybe you should tell me why we’re all here.”
Amber looked from Dave to the doctor.
Amber: “What’s going on?”
Doctor: “Amber, we need to discuss the DNA results.”
Amber’s face changed instantly.
Amber: “DNA results? What DNA results?”
Dave let out a short, bitter laugh.
Dave: “Don’t do that. Don’t stand here and pretend you have no idea what’s happening.”
Amber: “Dave, I honestly don’t know what you’re talking about!”
He raised the paper so she could see it.
Dave: “Look at this report, Amber. The results are in. Anthony’s DNA is a match.”
Amber froze. Her lips parted, but no words came out. For a moment, the room seemed completely silent.
Amber: “No. This can’t be right. There has to be a mistake.”
Dave: “That’s what I kept telling myself! Every time something didn’t make sense, I found another excuse for you. Every time somebody questioned your relationship with Anthony, I defended you. I trusted you when I should have been asking questions.”
Amber’s eyes filled with tears.
Amber: “Dave, please. You don’t understand the whole situation.”
Dave: “Then explain it!”
His voice echoed through the office.
Dave: “Explain why Anthony’s name keeps coming up. Explain why you get nervous whenever I ask you a simple question. Explain why I had to come to a medical center to discover something you should have been honest about!”
Amber covered her mouth with both hands. She had never seen Dave this angry before. He looked as though every promise he had believed in had suddenly become meaningless.
Doctor: “Mr. Dave, I understand this is emotional, but we should discuss exactly what the report establishes before drawing conclusions beyond the test results.”
Dave turned back to Amber.
Dave: “So tell me the truth. What exactly have you been hiding from me?”
Amber couldn’t answer. And her silence only made everything worse.
Scene 3: The Question That Changes Everything
Dave placed the report on the desk and pointed toward the result.
Dave: “Do you see that word, Amber? Match. That’s what it says. I didn’t come here looking for an argument. I came here looking for the truth.”
Amber wiped her tears.
Amber: “Dave, I know how this looks, but you have to let me explain.”
Dave: “Then explain!”
Amber: “I was scared!”
The words burst out before she could stop herself. Dave fell silent.
Amber: “I was scared that if you found out everything, you would walk away from me. I knew you would ask questions, and I didn’t know how to answer them.”
Dave: “So you decided to keep me in the dark?”
Amber: “I wasn’t trying to hurt you!”
Dave: “But you did!”
His voice cracked with emotion.
Dave: “You don’t get to decide what I can handle. You don’t get to build a relationship on secrets and then tell me you were protecting me.”
Amber looked down at the floor. For the first time, she seemed to understand that crying wouldn’t automatically make this conversation disappear.
Dave: “Tell me one thing. Did Anthony know about this before I did?”
Amber hesitated. That tiny pause was enough to make Dave’s expression harden.
Dave: “He knew, didn’t he?”
Amber: “I can’t answer that without explaining what happened.”
Dave: “Then start explaining.”
Amber took a deep breath.
Amber: “There are things that happened before you and I reached the point where we are now. I made decisions that I thought I could keep separate from our relationship. But everything became complicated, and I didn’t know how to tell you.”
Dave stared at her.
Dave: “Complicated? That’s the word you’re using?”
Dave: “What’s terrible is that I’m standing here wondering whether I ever really knew the person I trusted.”
Amber’s face crumpled.
Amber: “Please don’t say that.”
Dave: “Why shouldn’t I? You keep asking me to understand you, but have you stopped for one second to understand what this is doing to me?”
Amber had no answer. The doctor carefully collected the paperwork and placed it back in the folder.
Doctor: “I recommend that both of you take a moment to calm down. We can review the report’s findings and clarify exactly what the comparison means.”
Dave nodded without taking his eyes off Amber.
Dave: “Fine. But after today, I won’t accept another half-truth.”
Scene 4: Anthony’s Name Becomes the Center of the Storm
Dave stepped away from the desk and took out his phone.
Amber: “Who are you calling?”
Dave: “Anthony.”
Amber immediately looked worried.
Amber: “Dave, please. Don’t call him right now.”
Dave slowly lowered his phone.
Dave: “Why? Is there something else I need to know before I speak to him?”
Amber: “That’s not what I meant.”
Dave: “Then what did you mean?”
Amber: “I just don’t want this to become something we can’t take back.”
Dave looked around the medical office.
Dave: “Amber, we’re already past that point. You and I are standing in a room discussing a DNA report that neither of us can pretend doesn’t exist. If Anthony is involved in this situation, then he needs to answer some questions too.”
Amber looked terrified.
Amber: “Please, Dave. Let me talk to you first. Just the two of us.”
For a brief moment, Dave’s anger gave way to exhaustion. He had loved Amber. He had imagined building a future with her, sharing good days and surviving difficult ones together. He had believed honesty would be the one thing they could depend on.
Dave: “I wanted to give you every opportunity to tell me the truth. I wanted you to come to me before things reached this point.”
Amber: “I know.”
Dave: “No, I don’t think you do. I’m going to hear your explanation. But I’m not promising that your explanation will fix what has happened.”
Amber nodded through her tears.
Amber: “That’s all I’m asking. Please, just listen.”
Dave glanced at the doctor.
Dave: “Can we have a moment?”
The doctor stepped outside, giving them privacy while remaining available to answer questions about the medical results.
The door closed. Amber and Dave were finally alone, and there was nowhere left for Amber to hide behind excuses.
Scene 5: Amber Makes a Confession
Amber sat down slowly, her hands clasped together.
Amber: “Dave, I know you’re angry. You have every right to be. But I need you to know that I never wanted you to find out like this.”
Dave: “How did you want me to find out, Amber? Ten years from now? Twenty years from now? Or were you planning to take this secret to your grave?”
Amber: “That’s not fair.”
Dave: “Neither is what you’ve put me through.”
She took another breath.
Amber: “When Anthony’s name first became part of this situation, I thought I could handle everything privately. I kept telling myself that if I waited long enough, the right moment would come. But the longer I waited, the harder it became to tell you.”
Dave listened without interrupting.
Amber: “Every time you looked at me and trusted me, I felt worse. I wanted to tell you, but I was afraid of losing you. Then I became afraid of what would happen if Anthony found out that I had told you.”
Dave: “So both of you knew there was something I needed to understand, and I was the only one left outside the conversation?”
Amber didn’t answer immediately. Her silence was painful.
Dave turned toward the window, trying to control his emotions.
Dave: “I could have handled a difficult truth. Maybe I would have been angry. Maybe I would have needed time. But at least I would have known where I stood.”
He turned back toward her.
Dave: “Instead, you’ve left me questioning everything.”
Amber stood up.

He looked at her for a long moment.

She nodded.

Amber’s eyes widened again. She had hoped Dave would focus on his anger and that somehow she could avoid the details. But he wasn’t letting her change the subject.

Dave: “What?”
Amber: “I can’t tell you everything without him being here.”
Dave: “Then we’re going to bring him here.”

Dave walked toward the door, but Amber stopped just short of touching his arm.
