THE HOSPITAL CONFRONTATION
INT. HOSPITAL – BETHANY’S ROOM – EVENING
The room is quiet.
The soft beep of the heart monitor fills the air.
Bethany lies on the hospital bed, looking exhausted. Her face is pale, and one hand rests carefully over her stomach.
She closes her eyes.
A tear rolls down her cheek.
She is trying to stay strong.
The door slowly opens.
Bethany looks up.
Her boyfriend, JASON, steps inside.
His face is filled with worry.
He stops when he sees her condition.
JASON
Bethany…
His voice cracks.
Bethany gives him a weak smile.
BETHANY
You came.
Jason quickly walks toward her bed.
He pulls a chair closer and sits beside her.
JASON
Of course I came. When I heard you were sick, I couldn’t just stay home.
Bethany looks down.
BETHANY
I didn’t want you to worry about me.
Jason gently takes her hand.
JASON
How could I not worry?
He looks at her carefully.
JASON
Tell me what’s happening.
Bethany takes a shaky breath.
BETHANY
The pain has been getting worse.
Jason’s expression changes.
Fear fills his eyes.
JASON
Are the doctors helping you?
BETHANY
They’re trying.
She forces a small smile.
BETHANY
I’m going to be okay.
Jason doesn’t look convinced.
He squeezes her hand.
JASON
You don’t have to pretend with me.
Bethany’s eyes become watery.
For a moment, neither of them speaks.
The hospital monitor continues beeping.
Jason reaches up and gently wipes away her tear.
JASON
I’m here now.
Bethany looks at him.
BETHANY
Thank you.
Jason smiles softly.
JASON
You don’t have to thank me.
A sudden sound comes from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Heavy.
Angry.
Bethany’s smile disappears.
She knows that sound.
Jason turns toward the door.
The door opens.
Larry steps inside.
He stops immediately when he sees Jason sitting beside Bethany.
His eyes narrow.
THE ROOM BECOMES TENSE.
Bethany sits up slightly.
BETHANY
Larry…
Larry doesn’t answer.
He stares at Jason.
Jason slowly stands.
JASON
Larry, I came to see Bethany.
Larry takes a step forward.
LARRY
I can see that.
His voice is cold.
Bethany becomes nervous.
BETHANY
Larry, please.
Larry points toward Jason.
LARRY
You really thought this was the right place to show up?
Jason remains calm.
JASON
She’s sick. I came because I care about her.
Larry’s jaw tightens.
LARRY
You care about her?
Jason looks at Bethany.
JASON
Yes.
Larry suddenly moves toward him.
Bethany’s eyes widen.
BETHANY
Larry, stop!
Larry grabs Jason by the shirt.
Jason tries to pull away.
JASON
What are you doing?
Larry shoves him backward.
Jason nearly loses his balance.
BETHANY
Larry!
Bethany tries to get out of bed.
Jason immediately looks at her.
JASON
Bethany, stay in bed!
Larry steps toward Jason again.
His anger is obvious.
LARRY
You need to stay away from her.
JASON
You don’t get to decide that.
Larry pushes him again.
Jason finally pushes Larry’s hand away.
THE TENSION EXPLODES.
Larry swings at Jason.
Jason ducks.
A nearby chair falls to the floor.
BETHANY
STOP!
Her voice echoes through the room.
Larry grabs Jason again.
Jason tries to defend himself.
The two men struggle near the doorway.
Bethany becomes terrified.
BETHANY
Please! You’re in a hospital!
Jason manages to break free.
He steps back.
JASON
Larry, I’m not here to fight you.
Larry breathes heavily.
LARRY
Then leave.
Jason looks at Bethany.
She is crying.
Jason’s anger fades when he sees her face.
He takes a slow breath.
JASON
Bethany…
Bethany shakes her head.
BETHANY
Don’t go.
Larry looks at her.
His expression hardens.
LARRY
Bethany, he shouldn’t be here.
BETHANY
He’s here because he cares about me!
Silence.
Jason looks surprised.
Larry stares at her.
Bethany wipes her tears.
BETHANY
I’m already scared.
Her voice trembles.
BETHANY
I’m sick, I’m in pain, and I don’t know what happens next.
She looks directly at Larry.
BETHANY
I don’t need you fighting someone who came to support me.
Larry’s anger slowly begins to disappear.
He looks away.
Jason remains silent.
The room becomes quiet again.
The monitor continues its steady rhythm.
Larry takes a deep breath.
LARRY
I was angry.
Bethany doesn’t respond.
LARRY
When I saw him here, I lost control.
Jason looks at Larry.
JASON
I understand you’re protective of her.
Larry looks at him.
JASON
But I’m not her enemy.
Larry’s expression changes slightly.
Jason continues.
JASON
I heard she was hurting, and I came here.
He points toward Bethany.
JASON
That’s all.
Larry looks at Bethany.
She looks exhausted.
His face softens.
LARRY
Are you okay?
Bethany nods slowly.
BETHANY
I’m trying to be.
Larry moves closer to her bed.
He looks at the hospital equipment around her.
His anger is replaced by concern.
LARRY
What did the doctor say?
BETHANY
They’re still running tests.
Larry nods.
For the first time, he seems genuinely worried.
Jason steps closer to Bethany.
JASON
She shouldn’t be stressed right now.
Larry looks at him.
There is still tension between them.
But this time, Larry doesn’t attack.
LARRY
You’re right.
Jason is surprised.
Larry looks toward the door.
LARRY
I shouldn’t have started that fight.
Bethany lets out a small breath.
BETHANY
Thank you.
Larry looks at Jason.
LARRY
But I’m watching out for her.
Jason nods.
JASON
So am I.
The two men stare at each other.
Neither one smiles.
But the hostility has finally settled.
Suddenly, the door opens.
A NURSE walks inside.
She looks at the fallen chair.
Then at the three people.
NURSE
What happened here?
Everyone goes silent.
Jason looks at Larry.
Larry looks at Bethany.
Bethany sighs.
BETHANY
Nothing.
The nurse raises an eyebrow.
NURSE
Nothing?
She looks at the chair on the floor.
NURSE
Because it looks like something happened.
Larry quietly picks up the chair.
LARRY
We had a disagreement.
The nurse gives him a serious look.
NURSE
This is a hospital. No fighting.
Larry nods.
LARRY
Understood.
The nurse checks Bethany’s monitor.
NURSE
Bethany, you need to rest.
Bethany nods.
Jason moves toward the door.
Bethany immediately looks at him.
BETHANY
Will you come back?
Jason smiles.
JASON
As soon as they let me.
Bethany smiles weakly.
JASON
Get some rest.
Jason looks at Larry.
For a moment, neither says anything.
Then Jason walks out.
The door closes.
Larry remains beside Bethany.
Bethany looks at him.
BETHANY
You scared me.
Larry lowers his head.
LARRY
I’m sorry.
Bethany watches him quietly.
LARRY
I just hate seeing you hurt.
Bethany reaches for his hand.
BETHANY
Then help me heal.
Larry nods.
He gently holds her hand.
Outside the room, Jason walks down the hallway.
He stops.
He looks back toward Bethany’s room.
His expression is worried.
Inside, Larry sits beside Bethany.
The anger is gone.
Only concern remains.
The hospital room becomes quiet again.
The monitor continues to beep.
Bethany closes her eyes.
For the first time that evening, she feels a little safer.
But the tension between Larry and Jason is far from over.
This confrontation may have ended…
But their story has only just begun.
