Bethany PROMISES Larry a SURPRISE on the CRUISE — But Her BOYFRIEND Arrives With DIVORCE PAPERS!

Bethany smiled at Larry as they stood near the entrance of the cruise ship, watching the sunlight dance across the water. She had spent the entire morning telling him that she had something special planned for him, something that would change everything between them. Larry had been distant lately, and their marriage had been filled with arguments, misunderstandings, and painful silence. For once, he wanted to believe that Bethany was ready to make things right.

LARRY: “You keep telling me you have a surprise for me, Bethany. I hope you understand that I’m expecting something good after everything we’ve been through.”

BETHANY: “Just be patient, Larry. You have no idea what’s waiting for you. Today is going to be a day you’ll never forget.”

Larry studied her face, searching for a sign that she was being sincere. Bethany’s smile remained steady, but there was something in her eyes that he couldn’t quite understand. He pushed his doubts aside, convinced that perhaps she had finally realized how much their relationship needed to change.

LARRY: “I just want us to be happy again. I don’t want to spend another year wondering whether my own wife even wants to be with me.”

Bethany looked away for a moment before taking his hand.

BETHANY: “Let’s get on the cruise first. We can talk about everything later.”

They boarded the magnificent cruise ship together. The deck was beautifully decorated, and the ocean stretched endlessly into the distance. Music played softly from somewhere nearby, while couples laughed and took photographs. Larry looked around, hoping the beautiful surroundings meant Bethany had planned a romantic day for them.

He turned toward her and smiled.

LARRY: “I have to admit, this is nice. Maybe we really do need to get away from everything and spend some time together.”

BETHANY: “That’s exactly what I wanted you to think.”

Larry laughed quietly, but Bethany didn’t join him. Instead, she kept glancing toward the entrance of the deck as though she were waiting for someone to arrive.

A few minutes passed before Larry noticed her checking her phone.

LARRY: “Who are you waiting for?”

BETHANY: “Nobody. Why would you ask me that?”

LARRY: “Because you haven’t been paying attention to anything I’ve said since we got here.”

Bethany slipped her phone into her purse.

BETHANY: “Larry, please don’t start an argument. I told you I had a surprise. Can you give me a little time without questioning everything I do?”

Larry sighed and stepped toward the railing. He wanted to trust her, but her strange behavior was making it increasingly difficult.

Then Bethany suddenly straightened up.

Her expression changed as she looked past Larry toward the ship’s entrance. A man in a dark blue suit was walking toward them, carrying a large envelope in his hand. The moment Bethany saw him, her face lit up with a smile Larry had not seen directed at him in a very long time.

Larry turned around.

The man stopped beside Bethany, completely ignoring Larry at first. He looked directly at her, and she immediately stepped closer to him.

BOYFRIEND: “Bethany, I’m here. I brought everything you asked me to bring.”

Larry stared at them, struggling to understand what he was witnessing.

LARRY: “Excuse me? Who is this man, Bethany?”

Bethany didn’t answer immediately. She reached for the man’s hand, and that single gesture made Larry’s stomach tighten with disbelief.

LARRY: “Bethany, I’m talking to you. Who is he, and why is he holding your hand?”

Her boyfriend finally turned toward Larry.

BOYFRIEND: “My name is Anthony. And I think it’s time you understood why Bethany invited you on this cruise.”

Larry looked from Anthony to his wife.

LARRY: “What is he talking about? Bethany, tell him to stop playing games. We came here together because you said you had a surprise for me.”

Bethany took a deep breath. For a moment, she seemed unable to look Larry in the eyes. Then she reached into Anthony’s hand and took the envelope.

BETHANY: “Larry, the surprise I promised you isn’t what you expected.”

Larry’s face hardened.

LARRY: “Then explain it to me. Right now.”

Bethany opened the envelope and pulled out several documents. She held them tightly, her fingers trembling slightly as she prepared to speak.

BETHANY: “I’ve been thinking about our marriage for a long time. I’ve tried to convince myself that things could get better, but I can’t keep living like this.”

Larry shook his head.

LARRY: “So you brought another man onto a cruise ship to tell me you’re unhappy? You couldn’t have said that at home?”

BETHANY: “I didn’t want another argument. I wanted to do this somewhere we could talk without everybody getting involved.”

Larry let out a bitter laugh.

LARRY: “Without everybody getting involved? You brought your boyfriend! How is that supposed to make anything easier?”

Anthony moved closer to Bethany, and Larry immediately noticed how comfortable the two of them seemed together.

LARRY: “Wait a minute. You keep calling this a surprise, but you already knew he was coming. Was this planned before we even left home?”

Bethany lowered her eyes.

Her silence answered more than she could have said.

Larry stepped backward, staring at the woman he had married. He had imagined a peaceful afternoon, perhaps an honest conversation, maybe even a chance to repair their relationship. Instead, he was standing on a cruise ship watching another man prepare to take his wife away.

LARRY: “Tell me one thing, Bethany. Did you ever intend to spend this day with me, or was I just supposed to bring you here so he could meet you?”

BETHANY: “Larry, I know this hurts, but I made my decision. I don’t want to continue our marriage.”

She placed the documents against his chest.

BETHANY: “These are the divorce papers. I need you to understand that I’m serious.”

Larry didn’t take them immediately. He looked at the papers, then at Bethany, hoping she would suddenly admit that this was some terrible misunderstanding.

LARRY: “Divorce papers? After everything we’ve shared, this is how you want to end our marriage?”

BETHANY: “I’m sorry, Larry. I can’t keep pretending that everything is fine.”

LARRY: “Then why didn’t you tell me the truth before we got on this ship? Why did you promise me a surprise and let me believe that we were finally going to fix things?”

Bethany’s eyes filled with tears, but Anthony gently touched her shoulder.

ANTHONY: “Bethany, we should go. We’ve talked about this already.”

Larry immediately turned toward him.

LARRY: “Don’t tell my wife when she should leave. Whatever is happening between you two, I deserve an explanation.”

Anthony held Larry’s gaze.

ANTHONY: “She has made her choice. You need to respect it.”

LARRY: “Respect it? You think I can stand here and watch another man walk away with my wife while I’m holding divorce papers I never knew were coming?”

Bethany finally placed the papers in Larry’s hands.

BETHANY: “Please don’t make this harder than it already is.”

Larry looked down at the envelope. His hands trembled as he realized that the woman who had promised him a surprise had carefully planned the moment she would leave him.

Bethany took Anthony’s hand and turned toward the other end of the deck.

Larry watched them walk away, unable to believe that the day had turned into a public humiliation. Around them, passengers continued enjoying the cruise, unaware that a marriage was falling apart just a few feet away.

LARRY: “Bethany!”

She stopped but didn’t turn around.

LARRY: “Look me in the eyes and tell me that you never loved me. If you can honestly say that, I’ll know there’s nothing left for me to fight for.”

Bethany stood still. Anthony looked at her, waiting for her to continue walking, but she slowly turned back toward Larry.

For the first time since he had arrived, she looked genuinely conflicted.

BETHANY: “Larry, don’t do this to me.”

LARRY: “I’m not doing anything to you. I’m asking you to tell me the truth. Is this really what you want, or has someone convinced you that leaving me is the only answer?”

Anthony’s expression tightened.

ANTHONY: “Bethany, you don’t have to explain yourself anymore. Come with me.”

Bethany looked at Anthony, then at Larry. The cruise ship’s horn sounded across the water, and passengers began moving toward the next level of the deck.

Larry held the divorce papers against his chest.

LARRY: “If you walk away with him today, Bethany, don’t expect me to pretend that this was just another argument between husband and wife.”

Bethany wiped her eyes and tightened her grip on Anthony’s hand.

BETHANY: “I never wanted to hurt you, Larry. But I can’t stay in a marriage just because you’re afraid of losing me.”

She turned away again.

Larry stood frozen as Bethany and Anthony continued toward the staircase. Just before they disappeared from view, Anthony leaned toward her and whispered something that Larry couldn’t hear.

Bethany suddenly stopped walking.

She turned around and looked straight at Larry, her face drained of color.

BETHANY: “Larry, don’t sign those papers yet!”

Larry stared at her, stunned by the sudden change in her voice.

LARRY: “What are you talking about? You just handed them to me and told me our marriage was over!”

Bethany released Anthony’s hand and hurried back toward Larry. Anthony remained near the staircase, his expression turning serious as he watched her approach.

BETHANY: “There’s something you need to know before you do anything with those papers.”

Larry tightened his grip on the envelope.

LARRY: “What could possibly be more important than the fact that you brought your boyfriend here to take you away from me?”

Bethany glanced nervously over her shoulder at Anthony, then leaned closer to Larry.

BETHANY: “The divorce isn’t the only reason he came here. Larry, Anthony has something to tell you about what happens next, and once you hear it, you may never look at either of us the same way again.”

Larry slowly turned toward Anthony, who was now walking back toward them with a second document in his hand.

And when Anthony finally held that document out to Larry, Bethany whispered four words that made Larry hesitate before reaching for it.

BETHANY: “Please, don’t open it…”
