Bethany’s Critical Condition

Bethany’s Critical Condition

HOOK: Larry came to the hospital expecting answers—but one sudden change on Bethany’s monitor turned fear into panic.

1. A Room Filled With Fear

The hospital room was unusually quiet, except for the steady sounds of medical monitors. Bethany lay weak and exhausted in the hospital bed, her face pale and her eyes barely open. After undergoing a tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, she had developed severe pain, tightness, tenderness, and an infection that had left the medical team deeply concerned.

Several monitors surrounded her bed while doctors and nurses carefully watched her condition. Bethany barely moved. Even breathing seemed to require effort.

Larry stood beside her bed, staring at her with a mixture of worry, anger, and regret. His eyes repeatedly moved from Bethany to the monitors.

“Please, Bethany,” he whispered. “Just hold on.”

Before anyone could respond, the hospital-room door suddenly opened.

2. Newburger Arrives

Newburger rushed into the room after receiving the news about his daughter. His breathing was heavy, and the panic on his face was impossible to hide.

The moment he saw Bethany, he stopped.

“Oh, Bethany…”

He slowly approached the bed, staring at the medical equipment surrounding her. His expression changed from shock to fear.

Then he looked at Larry.

For several seconds, neither man spoke.

Newburger finally asked, “How long has she been like this?”

Larry’s expression hardened. His fear suddenly turned into anger.

“You want to know how long?”

3. Larry’s Anger Explodes

Larry took a step toward Newburger, his voice rising.

“I told you to stop the surgery, but you and your daughter didn’t listen. Now look at the condition Bethany is in!”

Newburger stared at him, clearly upset by the accusation.

“Bethany made her own decision, Larry.”

Larry shook his head.

“And you supported her! You knew the risks!”

Newburger’s voice became firm.

“This is not the time for blame. Look at her. She needs us focused on getting her through this crisis.”

Larry’s jaw tightened. His hands curled into tense fists at his sides, but he made no move toward Newburger.

“If something happens to her, how am I supposed to live with knowing I warned everyone?”

Newburger’s expression softened for a moment, but he refused to back down.

“Then stop arguing and stand beside her.”

4. The Doctor Demands Silence

The argument quickly filled the room with tension. Their voices echoed against the hospital walls, while Bethany remained weak and motionless between them.

A doctor immediately stepped between Larry and Newburger.

“Enough. Both of you.”

Larry fell silent.

The doctor looked directly at him.

“Mr. Larry, I understand that you’re angry, but Bethany needs a quiet and stable environment. Whatever happened before she came here can be discussed later. Right now, she needs your support.”

Larry looked toward Bethany.

His anger slowly faded from his face, replaced by guilt and fear.

“Okay,” he said quietly.

Newburger gave Larry a serious, emotional look. Neither man apologized, but both understood that the argument had to stop.

The room became silent again.

5. The Silence Before the Shock

Larry returned to Bethany’s bedside. Newburger remained nearby, watching his daughter carefully.

Bethany’s eyes stayed closed.

Larry leaned closer.

“Bethany, can you hear me?”

There was no answer.

Newburger looked anxiously toward the doctor.

“Is she getting worse?”

The doctor checked the monitors.

“We’re watching her very closely.”

Newburger swallowed nervously.

Larry stared at Bethany, his face filled with regret. Only minutes earlier, he had been furious. Now all he wanted was for her to open her eyes.

Then something changed.

The monitor suddenly produced a different pattern of beeps.

Larry immediately looked up.

“Doctor?”

6. Everything Changes

The medical team instantly moved toward Bethany’s bed.

Newburger froze.

“What’s happening?”

No one answered immediately.

One doctor checked Bethany while another watched the monitor. Nurses moved quickly around the bed, remaining focused and professional.

Larry stepped backward, his face turning pale.

“Please tell me what’s wrong with her.”

Still, the doctors concentrated on Bethany.

Newburger’s defensive expression disappeared completely. His eyes filled with fear as he watched the medical team work.

“Please help my daughter,” he whispered.

Larry looked at Newburger. There was no anger left between them now. Only fear connected them.

The monitor changed again.

The doctor’s expression suddenly became more serious.

“We need additional assistance in here.”

Larry’s heart seemed to stop.

Newburger gripped the edge of a chair, unable to look away from Bethany.

The room filled with urgent movement as more medical staff arrived. Larry stood frozen beside the wall while Newburger watched his daughter in disbelief.

The argument from minutes earlier felt like it had happened hours ago.

Larry whispered, “Bethany… please fight.”

The doctors continued working, but nobody offered reassurance.

Then the monitor sounded again.

Everyone suddenly looked toward Bethany.

One doctor exchanged a serious glance with another before turning back to the patient.

Larry’s face went pale.

Newburger whispered, “What does that mean?”

No one answered.

And as the doctors rushed to stabilize Bethany, Larry and Newburger could only watch helplessly, wondering whether Bethany would survive the night—or whether this sudden crisis had just become the beginning of something far worse.
