Anthony’s Choice: Shayla Demands Answers
ANTHONY’S CHOICE: SHAYLA DEMANDS ANSWERS
INT. ANTHONY’S HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – EVENING
The house is quiet, but the tension between Shayla and Anthony is anything but calm. Shayla stands near the coffee table, holding a notebook filled with party plans. Decorations, food, music, and guests are all carefully listed.
Anthony sits comfortably on the couch, scrolling through his phone. Shayla takes a deep breath. She already knows this conversation will not be easy.
SHAYLA You need to pay for Kai’s party.
Anthony slowly looks up. He studies Shayla’s face, almost as if he already knows where the conversation is going.
ANTHONY Why should I pay for Kai’s party?
ANTHONY He’s your son too.
A long silence fills the room. Shayla slowly lowers the notebook. Her expression changes from confusion to frustration.
SHAYLA What did you just say?
ANTHONY I said Kai is your son too, Shayla. Why does everything automatically become my responsibility?
Shayla takes several steps closer. Her voice becomes firmer.
SHAYLA Because you’re his father, Anthony.
ANTHONY I know that.
SHAYLA Then act like it.
Anthony puts his phone down and stands. The atmosphere immediately becomes heavier.
ANTHONY Shayla, don’t turn this into something it isn’t.
SHAYLA Then tell me what it is!
Anthony looks away. Shayla crosses her arms.
SHAYLA You’re D’Nisha’s stepfather.
Anthony looks back at her.
SHAYLA And you do so much for her. You help her when she needs something. You support her. You make sure she has what she needs.
ANTHONY Because she’s family.
SHAYLA Exactly!
Shayla steps closer. Her frustration is now impossible to hide.
SHAYLA Kai is family too.
SHAYLA Kai is D’Nisha’s brother. He’s your son. So why is it suddenly a problem when we ask you to spend money on his birthday?
ANTHONY That’s not fair.
SHAYLA What’s not fair is treating one child differently from another.
Anthony takes a deep breath. Shayla refuses to back down.
SHAYLA I’m not asking you for some ridiculous amount of money.
She opens the notebook and shows him the carefully planned budget.
SHAYLA I already cut the budget down. I found a smaller venue. I found a cheaper caterer. I even changed the decorations.
SHAYLA All I’m asking you to do is help me make Kai feel special.
ANTHONY You think I don’t want Kai to have a good birthday?
SHAYLA I didn’t say that.
ANTHONY But that’s what you’re implying.
SHAYLA Because your actions are making me question it!
The words echo through the room. Anthony stares at her. Shayla realizes how emotional she has become, but she refuses to step away.
SHAYLA You know what hurts?
Anthony remains silent.
SHAYLA When it comes to D’Nisha, you never hesitate.
Shayla wipes away a tear before it can fall.
SHAYLA But when it comes to Kai, suddenly you have questions.
ANTHONY Shayla…
SHAYLA No. I need you to understand why I’m upset.
Anthony finally sits back down. Shayla remains standing.
SHAYLA Kai looks up to you.
ANTHONY What?
SHAYLA He watches everything you do. He notices when you’re around. He notices when you help D’Nisha. He notices when you show up for everybody.
Shayla pauses, trying to hold back her emotions.
SHAYLA And you think he doesn’t notice when you don’t show up for him?
Anthony looks down. The question hits him harder than anything else Shayla has said.
ANTHONY I never wanted him to feel that way.
SHAYLA Then don’t let him.
Silence fills the room again. Anthony rubs his hands together, thinking carefully before answering.
ANTHONY You know what my problem is?
SHAYLA What?
ANTHONY Sometimes I feel like every decision I make gets turned into a comparison.
ANTHONY D’Nisha needs something, I help her. Kai needs something, I help him. Then somebody asks why I did this for one and not the other.
ANTHONY It gets exhausting.
Shayla listens carefully. Her anger begins to fade, replaced by understanding.
SHAYLA Then stop making it about the money.
ANTHONY What do you mean?
SHAYLA This isn’t really about how much the party costs.
Shayla’s real concern is not the party budget—it is whether Kai feels loved, valued, and remembered by his father.
SHAYLA It’s about whether Kai feels like his father cares enough to celebrate him.
ANTHONY You really think he cares about who pays for the party?
SHAYLA Maybe not.
SHAYLA But he cares about who shows up.
Anthony looks at her. Her words begin to sink in.
SHAYLA He cares about whether you’re standing beside him when everyone is singing happy birthday.
SHAYLA He cares about whether you’re proud of him.
Anthony looks away. His eyes become emotional.
SHAYLA Kai deserves to know that his father cares.
Anthony slowly reaches for the notebook. He opens it and studies the expenses.
ANTHONY How much do you need?
SHAYLA What?
ANTHONY I asked how much you need.
Shayla looks surprised. She never expected Anthony to change his position so quickly.
SHAYLA You’re serious?
ANTHONY I’m serious.
ANTHONY I’m not going to let Kai think I don’t care about him.
SHAYLA Thank you.
ANTHONY But we’re doing this together.
SHAYLA Together?
ANTHONY Yes. You plan it. I’ll handle the expenses you can’t cover.
SHAYLA That’s all I wanted.
For the first time that evening, Shayla smiles.
ANTHONY And Shayla…
SHAYLA Yes?
ANTHONY You were right about one thing.
SHAYLA Only one?
Anthony laughs softly.
ANTHONY Don’t push it.
Shayla laughs too. The tension finally begins to disappear.
ANTHONY Kai deserves to know that he’s loved.
SHAYLA He does.
ANTHONY Then let’s give him a birthday he’ll never forget.
Shayla smiles and nods. For a moment, everything feels settled.
But just as the tension finally disappears, Anthony’s phone suddenly rings.

He looks at the screen.

His smile disappears.

SHAYLA
Who is it?

Anthony doesn’t answer.

He stares at the caller ID.

ANTHONY
It’s about Kai.

Shayla’s expression changes instantly.

SHAYLA
What happened?

Anthony slowly answers the call.

Whatever he is about to hear could change the entire birthday plan.
FADE OUT.
