Beat One — The Visit

Two old friends, one hospital bed

The room is quiet. Bethany lies in bed, exhausted and emotional after a sudden health scare. Charlotte steps in and pulls a chair to the bedside.

CharlotteBethany… I just heard what happened. I had to come see you.
CharlotteHow are you feeling?
BethanyI’m just tired.
CharlotteI’m glad you’re getting taken care of. You scared everybody.

There is still tension between them, but Charlotte is clearly worried.

BethanyI didn’t expect any of this to happen.
CharlotteWhatever happened before today, I don’t want to argue about it right now. I just wanted to make sure you were okay.
BethanyEverything has been so stressful lately.
CharlotteI know. Just focus on getting better.

For a few moments, the room goes quiet again — then the door opens.

Beat Two — The Confrontation

Larry walks in

His expression changes the moment he sees Charlotte sitting beside Bethany.

LarryCharlotte?
CharlotteLarry, I came to check on Bethany.
LarryYou came here? After everything that has happened, you still thought it was okay to come around her?
CharlotteI came because she was in the hospital. I wasn’t here to start anything.
LarryLook at what Bethany has been going through. She’s been dealing with stress from every direction, and now she’s here in this hospital bed.
CharlotteI know she’s been going through a lot.
LarryAnd I’m telling you right now, I believe you played a major part in that.
CharlotteYou’re blaming me for this?
LarryI’m telling you that I’m tired of watching Bethany suffer.
CharlotteLarry, you don’t know everything that happened.
LarryI know enough.
CharlotteI came here peacefully. I didn’t come here to fight with you. So I’m not even allowed to check on her?
LarryNot anymore.

Bethany watches nervously. Larry’s expression softens slightly when he looks at her — then hardens again toward Charlotte.

LarryI’m giving you a final warning. After today, I don’t want to see you around Bethany unless I know about it first.
CharlotteYou can’t control who Bethany talks to.
LarryI’m not trying to control her. I’m trying to protect my wife.
CharlotteI care about Bethany too.
LarryThen respect what I’m asking.
CharlotteYou’re acting like I’m the enemy.
LarryRight now, I’m asking you to leave.

Charlotte looks at Bethany, whose eyes are filled with tears.

CharlotteBethany, I’m sorry this is happening.
BethanyI don’t want you two fighting because of me.
LarryNobody is fighting because of you.
CharlotteYou really want me gone?
LarryYes. Leave. Right now.

Charlotte’s expression turns to anger. She picks up her purse.

CharlotteFine. I came here because I was worried about you. Don’t ever think I didn’t care. Get some rest, Bethany.
BethanyCharlotte…

Charlotte walks out. The door closes behind her.

Beat Three — The Aftermath

What silence sounds like

Larry turns around. Bethany is crying quietly. He walks toward the bed and sits beside her.

LarryBethany, look at me. I’m sorry you had to watch that.
BethanyWhy does everybody keep fighting?
LarryBecause everybody has their own version of what happened.
BethanyI’m tired of all of it.

Larry goes quiet, realizing how emotionally overwhelmed she is.

LarryThen don’t worry about any of that tonight. Your only job right now is to rest.
BethanyI just want everybody to stop arguing.
LarryI know. We’ll deal with everything else later.

Down the hall, Charlotte stops near the elevator, still furious, and takes a deep breath.

CharlotteHe really thinks everything is my fault? This isn’t over.

Back in the room, Bethany looks toward the closed door, tears still in her eyes.

LarryBethany, please don’t cry.
BethanyI can’t help it.

For the first time since Charlotte left, there is no arguing. Only silence. But the tension between Larry and Charlotte is far from over.
