Chapter 1 — Brooke Decides to Get a Job
After Larry told Brooke that she would have to start paying her own car insurance, Brooke could no longer avoid the reality of adulthood.
For years, Brooke had been used to receiving an allowance and having Larry take care of many of her expenses. But Larry had finally decided that it was time for her to become responsible for herself.
The message from the viewers was clear as well. Many people supported Larry and believed Brooke needed to learn how to work, pay her own bills, and understand what being an adult really meant.
Some viewers even joked that Brooke should get a job at a fast-food restaurant, while others suggested that going to college might be a better option for her.
Brooke knew she had to prove herself.
Brooke:
“Fine. I’ll get a job. I’m going to show Dad that I can handle being an adult.”
The next morning, Brooke got dressed, fixed her hair, grabbed her purse, and headed to her first job interview.
Chapter 2 — Her First Job Interview
Brooke arrived at the office a few minutes early. She looked around nervously as she waited in the reception area.

“Good morning. Are you here for the interview?”

“Yes. This is my first interview.”

The interview started normally. Brooke answered questions about her experience, her availability, and why she wanted the position.

“No. This would actually be my first job.”

“That’s okay. Everyone has to start somewhere.”
Brooke began to relax.

The interviewer began behaving in a way that made Brooke extremely uncomfortable.
Brooke tried to remain calm, but she quickly realized that she needed to leave.

“I think I should go now.”

“Dad…”
She quickly called Larry.
Larry:

“I’m at the office where I came for the interview.”

“Why? What’s happening?”

“I don’t feel safe. Please come now.”
Larry immediately became serious.

“Stay where you are. I’m coming right now.”
Larry grabbed his keys and contacted the police.
Chapter 4 — Larry Rushes to the Office
Larry drove as fast as he safely could toward the office.
His mind was racing.
Just hours earlier, he had been telling Brooke that she needed to grow up and become responsible. Now she was calling him because she was afraid.
Larry:
“Please let her be okay.”
The police arrived with Larry and immediately entered the building.
Police Officer:
“Sir, stay behind us.”
Larry:
“That’s my daughter. She called me from inside.”
Police Officer:
“We’ll find her.”
Larry followed the officers through the office.
The building was unusually quiet.
Then Larry suddenly saw something that made his heart stop.
Chapter 5 — Brooke Is Found Unconscious
Larry:
“Brooke!”
Brooke was lying unconscious on the floor.
Larry immediately rushed toward her, but the officers stopped him for a moment while they secured the area.

“That’s my daughter! What happened to her?”
Police Officer:
“Sir, please stay calm. We’re checking the situation.”
Larry looked terrified.
Larry:
“Brooke! Baby, wake up!”
The officers called for medical assistance while another officer began checking the room.
Larry could barely control his emotions.
Larry:
“I told her to get a job. I wanted her to learn responsibility. I never thought something like this could happen.”
He stayed beside Brooke and kept calling her name.
Larry:
“Come on, Brooke. Dad’s here. You’re not alone.”
After several terrifying moments, Brooke finally moved.
Chapter 6 — Brooke Wakes Up
Brooke:
“Dad…”
Larry:
“I’m here. I’m right here.”
Brooke slowly opened her eyes.
Brooke:
“What happened?”
Larry:
“You’re safe now.”
Brooke looked around and saw the police officers.
Brooke:
“I was scared.”
Larry:
“You did the right thing by calling me.”
Brooke:
“I didn’t know what else to do.”
Larry:
“You never have to be afraid to call me when you need help.”
Brooke began crying.
Brooke:
“I thought I could handle everything myself.”
Larry:
“Being independent doesn’t mean you have to face dangerous situations alone.”
Chapter 7 — Larry Still Wants Brooke to Grow Up
Larry was relieved that Brooke was awake, but he still wanted her to understand the lesson he had been trying to teach her.
Larry:
“I want you to be independent. I want you to have a job. I want you to learn how to pay your own bills.”
Brooke:
“I understand.”
Larry:
“But none of that means you have to stop being my daughter.”
Brooke looked at Larry with tears in her eyes.
Brooke:
“Thank you for coming.”
Larry:
“I’ll always come when you call.”
For a moment, father and daughter simply stood there together.
But the police investigation was far from over.
Chapter 8 — The Investigation Begins
The police began examining the office and speaking with the people who were present.
Police Officer:
“We need to understand exactly what happened before Brooke became unconscious.”
Larry:
“Please find out what happened to my daughter.”
Police Officer:
“We will.”
Brooke watched silently as the officers continued their investigation.
Her first job interview had turned into a terrifying experience.
She had gone to the office hoping to prove to Larry that she was ready for adulthood.
Instead, she learned that adulthood was not simply about having freedom, driving a car, or demanding an allowance.

“I still want to work.”
Larry:
“Good.”

“But maybe I should be more careful about where I apply.”

Larry looked at Brooke and remembered how confident she had been when she left home that morning.
She wanted to prove that she could handle life on her own.

“You don’t have to prove anything to me by putting yourself in danger.”

“I know.”
Larry:
“Your responsibilities are still your responsibilities.”

“So I still have to pay my insurance?”
Larry looked at her and smiled slightly.

“Yes.”

“Seriously?”
Larry:
“Absolutely.”
Brooke:
“I knew there was a catch.”
Larry:
“No catch. That’s called life.”
Brooke shook her head, but this time she smiled.
Chapter 10 — But What Really Happened?
As Larry and Brooke prepared to leave, one of the police officers called Larry back.
Police Officer:
“Mr. Larry, we need to ask Brooke a few more questions.”
Larry:
“Is everything okay?”
Police Officer:
“We found something that may help explain what happened.”
Larry looked at Brooke.
Brooke’s expression immediately changed.
Brooke:
“What did you find?”
The officer looked toward the room where Brooke had been found.
Police Officer:
“We’re not ready to say yet. We need to investigate further.”
Larry stepped closer to Brooke.
Larry:
“Whatever happened here, we’re going to find the truth.”
Brooke nodded quietly.
Her first day as a working adult had become a day she would never forget.
