BROOKE AND STEVE’S DAY OUT TURNS INTO A SHOCKING CONFRONTATION
EXT. CITY SHOPPING DISTRICT – LATE AFTERNOON
Golden sunlight covers the busy streets.
Cars move slowly through traffic.
People walk along the sidewalks, carrying shopping bags and talking among themselves.
STEVE and BROOKE walk together along the sidewalk.
Steve looks relaxed.
Brooke smiles as they continue their conversation.
For a moment, everything feels peaceful.
Then Steve suddenly notices two GIRLS standing near a small café.
The girls look in Steve’s direction.
They whisper to each other.
One of them laughs.
Steve slows down.
Brooke notices her reaction.
BROOKE
What’s wrong?
Steve looks toward the girls.
STEVE
Nothing.
She tries to ignore them and continues walking.
But the girls keep talking.
Their comments become louder.
Steve stops.
She turns around.
STEVE
Are you talking about me?
The two girls exchange looks.
One of them steps forward.
GIRL #1
Maybe we are.
Brooke immediately looks concerned.
BROOKE
Steve, just leave it.
Steve takes a breath.
She tries to remain calm.
STEVE
I don’t know what your problem is, but you need to stop.
The girls laugh again.
GIRL #2
Why are you getting so upset?
Steve’s expression changes.
She walks closer, but keeps a reasonable distance.
STEVE
Because you’ve been making comments about me since we got here.
GIRL #1
And what are you going to do about it?
Brooke steps between them.
BROOKE
Okay, everyone needs to calm down.
She looks at Steve.
BROOKE
Let’s just go.
Steve hesitates.
The girls continue talking.
Steve turns back toward them.
STEVE
You don’t have to like me.
She pauses.
STEVE
But you do need to respect me.
The situation becomes tense.
A few people nearby begin looking over.
The girls refuse to back down.
GIRL #2
We’re just saying what we think.
STEVE
Then say it somewhere else.
Brooke gently takes Steve’s arm.
BROOKE
Come on.
Steve finally turns away.
She and Brooke begin walking.
But after a few steps, one of the girls calls out again.
Steve stops.
She turns around.
STEVE
What now?
The argument starts again.
The voices become louder.
Brooke looks frustrated.
She steps forward.
BROOKE
Enough!
Everyone becomes quiet for a moment.
Brooke looks at both girls.
BROOKE
This isn’t worth fighting over.
GIRL #1
Stay out of it.
BROOKE
I’m trying to stop this before it gets worse.
Steve looks at Brooke.
STEVE
Brooke, just stay back.
Brooke shakes her head.
BROOKE
No. I’m not letting this turn into something bigger.
The girls move closer.
Steve stands her ground.
The tension suddenly rises.
One of the girls makes another insulting comment.
Steve reacts angrily.
STEVE
That’s enough!
She steps forward.
The girl responds immediately.
The argument turns into a physical confrontation.
Brooke rushes between them.
BROOKE
STOP!
She tries to separate everyone.
For a moment, it seems like the situation might calm down.
Then one of the girls suddenly turns toward Brooke.
Brooke steps back in surprise.
BROOKE
Wait! I’m not trying to fight you!
The girl continues toward her.
Steve immediately notices.
STEVE
Brooke!
Steve moves toward them.
Brooke tries to protect herself and create distance.
People nearby begin gathering around the scene.
A passerby pulls out a phone.
Another person tells everyone to calm down.
BROOKE
I was only trying to help!
The girl continues arguing with Brooke.
Brooke becomes frightened and steps backward.
Steve moves between them.
STEVE
Leave her alone!
The girl stops.
She looks at Steve angrily.
GIRL #1
This is none of your business.
STEVE
She was trying to stop the fight.
Brooke takes a deep breath.
She looks around at the growing crowd.
BROOKE
Everyone, please just stop.
The girls continue shouting.
Steve refuses to move away from Brooke.
STEVE
We’re leaving.
Steve takes Brooke by the arm and carefully guides her away.
Brooke looks back at the girls.
BROOKE
Let’s just go.
Steve nods.
They begin walking away.
But the argument has clearly shaken Brooke.
She looks nervous.
BROOKE
I didn’t think this was going to happen.
Steve looks at her.
STEVE
Neither did I.
They continue walking.
After a few moments, Brooke stops.
BROOKE
Are you okay?
Steve takes a breath.
STEVE
I’m okay.
She looks at Brooke.
STEVE
But are you?
Brooke nods slowly.
BROOKE
I’m fine.
Steve knows Brooke is still upset.
STEVE
You shouldn’t have had to get involved.
BROOKE
I couldn’t just stand there and watch you two fight.
Steve gives her a concerned look.
STEVE
Next time, don’t put yourself in the middle.
Brooke gives a small nod.
BROOKE
I’ll try.
The two continue down the sidewalk.
Behind them, the crowd slowly disperses.
The girls remain near the café, still arguing among themselves.
Brooke looks back one last time.
Then she turns toward Steve.
BROOKE
Let’s just forget about them.
Steve nods.
STEVE
Yeah.
They walk away together.
The late afternoon sunlight follows them down the street.
But neither of them realizes that the confrontation may not be over yet.
