When Wayne Defends D’Nisha and Lauren Questions His Motives

What started as a simple disagreement over food quickly turned into a much bigger confrontation when Wayne decided to speak up for D’Nisha. Nobody expected a small workplace issue to create tension between Wayne and Lauren, but once Lauren began questioning Wayne’s reasons for defending D’Nisha, the entire atmosphere changed.

The day had already been busy. Everyone was preparing for the podcast, handling different responsibilities, and trying to make sure everything was ready. During the meeting, Shayla had asked D’Nisha to order food for everyone. D’Nisha refused, explaining that she was already responsible for other tasks and did not believe ordering food was part of her job.

At first, it seemed like a minor disagreement.

But when Wayne heard what had happened, he wanted to understand the situation.

“Wait a minute,” Wayne said. “What exactly is her position here?”

Delicia explained that D’Nisha was supposed to assist with the reception area and help with things connected to the podcast.

Wayne shook his head.

“Then why are we acting like ordering everybody’s food is automatically her responsibility?”

Delicia tried to explain that Shayla had simply asked D’Nisha to order the food because everyone else was busy.

“I understand that,” Wayne replied. “But that doesn’t mean she has to do something just because somebody asked her.”

The conversation became more serious when Wayne pointed out that there were several people in the room.

“There are five of y’all,” he said. “One person can order food. But that doesn’t mean you put it on somebody who isn’t there to do that.”

Delicia looked frustrated.

“But it’s not that serious,” she said. “We were just asking her to help.”

Wayne responded calmly but firmly.

“It becomes serious when somebody starts feeling like they’re being treated differently because of their position.”

That statement caught Lauren’s attention.

Lauren had been listening to the conversation, and she could tell Wayne was becoming increasingly protective of D’Nisha. To Lauren, his reaction seemed stronger than necessary for something as simple as ordering food.

She finally stepped into the conversation.

“Wayne, why are you so concerned about D’Nisha?”

Wayne looked at her.

“What do you mean?”
“I mean exactly what I said,” Lauren replied. “Why are you defending her this hard?”

Wayne immediately became defensive.

“I’m not defending anybody for no reason. I’m talking about what’s right.”

Lauren crossed her arms.

“But you’re making this into something bigger than it is.”
“No,” Wayne said. “Y’all made it bigger when you started putting expectations on somebody without even being clear about her responsibilities.”

Lauren wasn’t convinced.

“You have a lot to say about D’Nisha’s responsibilities,” she said. “You seem to know exactly what she should and shouldn’t be doing.”

Wayne stared at her for a moment.

“Because I’m trying to make sure everybody understands their role.”

Lauren shook her head.

“That’s not what it looks like.”

Wayne’s expression changed.

“What does it look like, then?”

Lauren paused before answering.

“It looks like you have a lot of sympathy for D’Nisha. More than you have for everybody else.”

The room suddenly became quiet.

Wayne could tell that Lauren wasn’t simply talking about food anymore. Her question had turned into something much more personal.

“Lauren, this has nothing to do with sympathy,” Wayne said. “She was asked to do something that wasn’t necessarily part of her job, and I said something about it. That’s it.”
Lauren responded, “Then why are you getting so worked up?”
“Because nobody should feel like they have to accept disrespect just because they’re the assistant.”

Lauren looked at him carefully.

“Disrespect? You really think asking her to order food was disrespectful?”
Wayne answered, “It becomes disrespectful when you keep pushing after someone says no.”

That response made Lauren even more suspicious.

“So if D’Nisha says no, everybody has to accept it?”
“If it’s something outside her responsibilities, then yes,” Wayne replied. “You can ask somebody for help, but you can’t act like they owe you.”

Lauren took a deep breath.

“I just don’t understand why you’re taking this so personally.”
Wayne immediately responded. “I’m not taking it personally. You are.”

Lauren looked away for a moment before saying:

“I’m asking a question, Wayne.”
“And I answered it.”
“But you didn’t answer the real question.”

Wayne frowned.

“What real question?”

Lauren looked directly at him.

“Why do you care about D’Nisha this much?”

The question completely changed the tone of the conversation.

Wayne was silent for a few seconds.

“That’s what you’re worried about?” he finally asked.
Lauren replied, “I think everyone deserves to know why you’re going this hard to defend her.”

Wayne shook his head.

“This is exactly the problem. Instead of focusing on whether something was right or wrong, now everybody wants to question my motives.”

Lauren wasn’t backing down.

“Maybe your motives wouldn’t be questioned if you weren’t so quick to jump in for her.”

Wayne looked around the room.

“This started with food. Now you’re turning it into something else.”
Lauren answered, “Maybe it was never just about the food.”

For a moment, nobody said anything.

Wayne knew the conversation had gone much further than he expected. What began as a simple disagreement about D’Nisha ordering food had now created tension between him and Lauren.

And the biggest question was no longer whether D’Nisha should have ordered the food.

It was why Wayne seemed so determined to stand up for her.

Lauren had planted the question in everyone’s mind, and Wayne’s reaction only made the situation more complicated.

The argument wasn’t over.

In fact, it looked like things were about to get even more serious.
