Lauren brings Wayne breakfast. One sentence about D’Nisha turns the morning into something neither of them can take back.

Lauren Wayne D’Nisha
INT. WAYNE’S HOUSE — KITCHEN — MORNING

Soft morning sunlight pours through the windows. The house is quiet. Lauren walks in carrying a large breakfast tray — pancakes, eggs, fresh fruit, toast, coffee. She arranged everything herself, and looks pleased with it.

Lauren
I know Wayne is going to love this.

She takes a deep breath and carries the breakfast toward the dining room.

INT. WAYNE’S HOUSE — DINING ROOM — CONTINUOUS

Wayne sits at the table, checking his phone. Lauren walks in and places the tray in front of him. He looks up, surprised.

Wayne
What’s all this?
Lauren
Breakfast. I made it for you.

Wayne looks at the food, impressed.

Wayne
You made all of this?
Lauren
Yes. I wanted to surprise you this morning.

Wayne puts his phone down and picks up his fork. Lauren watches him carefully, waiting for his reaction. He takes a bite. Pauses. Her smile grows.

Lauren
Well?
Wayne
It’s good.
Lauren
Just good?
Wayne
Yeah.
Lauren
I spent almost an hour making this.

Wayne takes another bite. Then, without thinking about how his words might land, he speaks.

Wayne
D’Nisha cooks better than you.

Lauren’s smile instantly disappears. Silence fills the room. Her expression shifts from happiness to disbelief.

Lauren
What did you just say?
Wayne
I said D’Nisha cooks better than you.
Lauren
You really just compared my cooking to D’Nisha’s?

Wayne puts his fork down.

Wayne
Lauren, I was just telling the truth.
Lauren
No. You weren’t “just telling the truth.” You were insulting me.
Wayne
I didn’t mean it like that.
Lauren
Then how did you mean it?

Wayne doesn’t answer immediately. Lauren folds her arms, clearly hurt.

Lauren
I woke up early. I made breakfast for you. I brought it here because I wanted to do something nice for you. And the first thing you do is tell me another woman cooks better than me?
Wayne
You’re making this bigger than it is.
Lauren
Because you don’t understand! It’s not about breakfast. It’s about D’Nisha.
Wayne
What does D’Nisha have to do with this?

Lauren laughs bitterly.

Lauren
Everything. Every time her name comes up, you defend her. Every time somebody talks about her, you have something positive to say. And now you’re sitting here eating the breakfast I made while telling me that she does it better.
Wayne
Lauren, you’re overreacting.

Lauren points toward the door.

Lauren
No. I’m reacting exactly how I feel.
Wayne
I didn’t say I wanted D’Nisha.
Lauren
But you clearly like what she does.
Wayne
It’s just food.
Lauren
Then if you like D’Nisha’s cooking so much, leave me and bring D’Nisha into your house!

Wayne freezes. The room becomes completely silent. Lauren looks away, trying to control her emotions. Wayne slowly walks toward her.

Wayne
Lauren, don’t say things like that.
Lauren
Why not? You said them first.
Wayne
I never said I wanted to leave you.
Lauren
You didn’t have to. Your words said enough.

Lauren walks toward the kitchen. Wayne follows her.

INT. WAYNE’S HOUSE — KITCHEN — MOMENTS LATER

Lauren begins picking up the empty dishes. Wayne watches her.

Wayne
Leave the dishes. I’ll clean them.
Lauren
No. You shouldn’t have to clean anything. D’Nisha probably would’ve done it better anyway.

Wayne’s expression changes — he realizes she’s mocking his comment.

Wayne
Lauren, that’s not fair.
Lauren
Fair? Was it fair when you told me another woman cooks better than me?

Wayne takes a breath.

Wayne
I shouldn’t have said it. I was careless. I didn’t realize how much that would hurt you.

Lauren’s anger softens slightly, but she remains upset.

Lauren
You need to understand something, Wayne. I’m not competing with D’Nisha. And I’m not going to compete for your attention.
Wayne
I understand.
Lauren
If you want her around you, that’s your choice. But don’t make me feel like I’m not enough because you keep comparing me to her.
Wayne
You’re not competing with anyone.
Lauren
Then stop making comparisons.
Wayne
You’re right.

Lauren looks down. The tension remains.

INT. WAYNE’S HOUSE — LIVING ROOM — LATER

Lauren sits on the couch. Wayne walks in and sits across from her. Neither speaks for several seconds. Wayne finally breaks the silence.

Wayne
Lauren.

She looks up.

Wayne
I appreciate what you did this morning. You didn’t have to wake up early and make breakfast for me. You did it because you care about me.

Lauren’s expression softens.

Lauren
Then remember that next time before you speak.
Wayne
I will.
Lauren
I don’t want to hear D’Nisha’s name every time we’re having a disagreement.
Wayne
You won’t.
Lauren
Promise?
Wayne
Promise.

A brief silence follows. Lauren finally nods. But her mind is still troubled.

INT. D’NISHA’S HOUSE — AFTERNOON

D’Nisha sits in the kitchen. Her phone rings. She looks at the screen — it’s Wayne. She answers.

D’Nisha
Hello?
Wayne
Hey, D’Nisha.

D’Nisha smiles.

D’Nisha
What’s going on?

Wayne hesitates.

Wayne
I wanted to ask you something.
D’Nisha
Sure.
Wayne
Did you ever teach Lauren how to make breakfast?

D’Nisha looks confused.

D’Nisha
What?
Wayne
Never mind. It’s a long story.

D’Nisha laughs.

D’Nisha
Now you have me curious.
Wayne
I’ll tell you later.

They end the call. D’Nisha looks at her phone, confused.

INT. WAYNE’S HOUSE — LIVING ROOM — SAME TIME

Lauren walks past the hallway. She stops. She sees Wayne putting his phone away. Her expression changes.

Lauren
Who was that?
Wayn
