THE DINNER THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
SCENE 1 — DAVE’S INVITATION
INT. LAUREN’S HOUSE — EVENING
The house is quiet.
Lauren stands near the mirror, fixing her hair after a long day. Her phone suddenly rings.
She looks at the screen.
DAVE
Lauren hesitates for a moment before answering.
LAUREN
Hello?
DAVE
Hey, Lauren. Are you free tonight?
Lauren smiles slightly.
LAUREN
Tonight? Why?
Dave takes a breath.
DAVE
I wanted to ask you something.
A short pause.
DAVE
Would you like to have dinner with me?
Lauren looks surprised.
LAUREN
Dinner?
DAVE
Yeah. Just dinner. We could talk, relax, and have a good evening.
Lauren thinks about it.
Her expression slowly changes into a smile.
LAUREN
Okay, Dave. I’ll go.
Dave sounds relieved.
DAVE
Really?
LAUREN
Really.
DAVE
I’ll pick you up soon.
They end the call.
Lauren looks at herself in the mirror.
She takes a deep breath.
LAUREN
Tonight might actually be nice.
She walks toward her room to get ready.
SCENE 2 — GETTING READY
INT. LAUREN’S BEDROOM — LATER
Lauren opens her closet.
She looks through several outfits before finally choosing one.
She changes and stands in front of the mirror.
She adjusts her hair and smiles.
For the first time that day, she looks genuinely happy.
Her phone buzzes.
A message from Dave appears.
DAVE’S TEXT
“I’m outside.”
Lauren grabs her purse.
LAUREN
Okay… here we go.
She walks downstairs and leaves the house.
SCENE 3 — DAVE ARRIVES
EXT. LAUREN’S HOUSE — NIGHT
Dave waits beside his car.
When Lauren walks outside, he smiles.
DAVE
You look great.
Lauren smiles shyly.
LAUREN
Thank you.
Dave opens the passenger door for her.
Lauren gets inside.
Dave walks around to the driver’s side.
A few seconds later, the car pulls away.
SCENE 4 — THE RESTAURANT
INT. RESTAURANT — NIGHT
The restaurant is warm and elegant.
Soft music plays in the background.
Dave and Lauren sit across from each other at a table.
A waiter brings them menus.
DAVE
I’m glad you came.
LAUREN
I’m glad you invited me.
Dave smiles.
They begin talking.
For a while, everything feels normal.
They laugh about small things.
Lauren relaxes.
DAVE
You know, I feel like we haven’t really talked in a long time.
LAUREN
You’re right.
She looks down at her drink.
LAUREN
Sometimes life just gets complicated.
Dave nods.
DAVE
Maybe tonight doesn’t have to be complicated.
Lauren looks at him.
A small smile appears on her face.
LAUREN
Maybe it doesn’t.
They continue talking.
Neither of them notices someone entering the restaurant.
AMBER.
SCENE 5 — AMBER ARRIVES
INT. RESTAURANT — CONTINUOUS
Amber walks through the restaurant.
She suddenly stops.
Her eyes land on Dave.
Then Lauren.
Her expression changes immediately.
Shock.
Then anger.
Amber watches them from a distance.
Dave laughs at something Lauren says.
Amber’s jaw tightens.
AMBER
Lauren…?
She takes another look.
There is no doubt.
Lauren is sitting with Dave.
Amber’s anger grows.
She walks toward their table.
SCENE 6 — THE CONFRONTATION
INT. RESTAURANT — CONTINUOUS
Lauren notices Amber approaching.
Her smile disappears.
Dave turns around.
His face changes when he sees Amber.
DAVE
Amber?
Amber stops beside the table.
She looks directly at Lauren.
AMBER
What are you doing here?
Lauren slowly stands.
LAUREN
Amber, please—
AMBER
Please what?
Amber looks at Dave.
AMBER
So this is what you’re doing?
Dave stands as well.
DAVE
Amber, calm down. Lauren and I are just having dinner.
Amber laughs bitterly.
AMBER
Just dinner?
She looks back at Lauren.
AMBER
You couldn’t even tell me?
Lauren looks uncomfortable.
LAUREN
There was nothing to tell.
Amber steps closer.
AMBER
Nothing?
The tension around the table becomes impossible to ignore.
Other customers begin looking in their direction.
Dave tries to keep the situation under control.
DAVE
Amber, this isn’t the place for this.
AMBER
Then where should I say it?
Amber points toward Lauren.
AMBER
I saw you sitting here with him!
Lauren’s eyes fill with frustration.
LAUREN
You don’t know what happened.
AMBER
I know exactly what I saw!
Lauren takes a breath.
LAUREN
Dave invited me to dinner. That’s all.
Amber stares at her.
For a moment, nobody speaks.
Then Amber’s anger suddenly boils over.
She moves toward Lauren aggressively.
Dave quickly steps between them.
DAVE
Amber! Stop!
Lauren steps backward.
LAUREN
Amber, don’t do this!
Amber continues shouting.
AMBER
You think you can just sit here with him like nothing happened?
Dave keeps himself between the two women.
DAVE
Enough!
The restaurant becomes silent.
Amber looks at Dave with disbelief.
AMBER
You’re defending her?
Dave shakes his head.
DAVE
I’m trying to stop this from getting worse.
Amber’s breathing becomes heavier.
Lauren looks shaken but stays composed.
SCENE 7 — THE TRUTH COMES OUT
INT. RESTAURANT — MOMENTS LATER
Dave lowers his voice.
DAVE
Amber, listen to me.
Amber says nothing.
DAVE
I invited Lauren here because I wanted to talk to her.
Amber looks at him.
AMBER
Why?
Dave pauses.
DAVE
Because I wanted a peaceful evening.
Amber looks toward Lauren.
AMBER
And you thought this was okay?
Lauren finally speaks.
LAUREN
I didn’t come here to hurt you.
Amber looks at her.
LAUREN
Dave invited me. I accepted. That’s the truth.
Amber’s expression softens for only a second.
Then the anger returns.
AMBER
You should have told me.
LAUREN
Maybe.
A long silence follows.
Dave looks between them.
DAVE
Fighting isn’t going to solve anything.
Amber turns toward him.
AMBER
Maybe you’re right.
She looks at Lauren one final time.
AMBER
But this isn’t over.
Lauren says nothing.
Amber turns and walks away.
SCENE 8 — AFTER THE STORM
EXT. RESTAURANT — NIGHT
Amber steps outside.
She stands on the sidewalk, trying to calm herself.
Inside the restaurant, Dave sits back down.
Lauren remains quiet.
DAVE
Are you okay?
Lauren nods slowly.
LAUREN
I’m okay.
She looks toward the restaurant entrance.
LAUREN
I just didn’t expect tonight to turn into this.
Dave sighs.
DAVE
Neither did I.
Lauren looks at him.
LAUREN
Maybe we should leave.
Dave nods.
DAVE
Yeah.
They stand and leave the table.
Outside, Amber watches from a distance.
She sees Dave and Lauren walk out together.
Her expression becomes serious.
She turns away and walks toward her car.
The night is far from over.
