The room was unusually quiet. Larry stood near the table, staring at the divorce documents in front of him. His fingers repeatedly tightened around the edge of the folder before relaxing again.

He had told himself that he was ready. He had convinced himself that this was the right decision. Yet now that the moment had finally arrived, his breathing became heavier and his expression revealed something he desperately wanted to hide.

Anxiety sat behind his eyes. His shoulders were tense, and every few seconds he glanced toward Bethany without saying a word.

2. Bethany Notices

Bethany studied him carefully. She could see that something was wrong. Larry was normally controlled, but tonight his nervousness was impossible to hide.

She slowly stepped closer, watching his face.

“Why are you so nervous?” Bethany asked. Her voice was sharp, but beneath her anger was uncertainty. “This is what you wanted, right? Or not?”

Larry didn’t immediately answer.

The silence between them became heavier than any argument they had ever shared. Bethany’s eyes moved toward the folder.

She suddenly realized what was inside.

Larry finally picked up the folder.

His hand trembled slightly as he held it out. He looked directly at Bethany, but his expression remained guarded.

Without saying another word, Larry handed her the divorce papers.

Bethany stared at the documents.

For several seconds, she couldn’t move. Her anger disappeared from her face, replaced by disbelief.

This wasn’t another argument. It wasn’t another threat. Larry had actually started the process.

Bethany’s eyes began filling with tears. She looked at Larry as if she were waiting for him to tell her this was all a mistake.

“You really did it,” she whispered.

Larry remained silent.

That silence hurt her more than an argument could have.

Bethany suddenly threw the papers onto the floor. The documents scattered across the room, some pages sliding beneath the table.

Then, overwhelmed by anger and heartbreak, she stepped forward and crushed the papers beneath her foot.

“You think you can just end everything like this?” she demanded, her voice breaking.

Larry didn’t move.

His expression became cold and determined. He watched the papers beneath Bethany’s foot without reacting.

But his eyes betrayed him.

Behind that controlled expression was anxiety, regret, and a pain he refused to acknowledge.

Bethany noticed it.

Through her tears, she stared directly into his eyes.

For one long moment, neither of them spoke.

Bethany slowly lifted her foot from the scattered papers.

One page remained pressed against the floor, its corner bent and damaged. Another page had landed upside down near Larry’s shoes.

Bethany wiped away a tear, but another immediately followed.

“If you really wanted this,” she said quietly, “then why do you look like you’re afraid of it?”

Larry’s jaw tightened.

He wanted to answer. He wanted to explain why his hands were shaking and why seeing Bethany standing there with tears in her eyes affected him more deeply than he had expected.

But he said nothing.

7. The Secret Behind the Silence

Bethany bent down and picked up one of the papers. She stared at Larry again, searching his face for one final sign that he still cared.

Larry finally stepped forward.

His eyes remained fixed on hers.

“Bethany…” he began.

She froze.

It was the first time his voice had sounded uncertain.

Bethany slowly raised her head.

“What?” she whispered.

Larry looked down at the damaged divorce papers, then back into Bethany’s tear-filled eyes. And just before he revealed why he had been so nervous all night, someone suddenly knocked on the door.

Bethany’s expression changed instantly. Larry stopped breathing for a moment. Whoever was standing outside had arrived at the worst possible time—and what they were about to reveal could change everything about the divorce.
