One innocent bite turns into a question nobody expected.

The Unexpected Reaction

Wayne thought it was just another funny moment at the party. D’Nisha had prepared her vegan Mac and Cheese, and she was clearly excited for everyone to try it. But what happened after Wayne took his first bite left Lauren with more questions than answers.

Wayne looked at the plate, hesitated for a moment, and finally took a bite.

D’Nisha: “So? Tell me the truth. How is it?”
Wayne: “Honestly? This is actually good.”

D’Nisha’s face immediately lit up.

D’Nisha: “I told you! I knew you were going to like it.”
Wayne: “Yeah, you did your thing with this.”

D’Nisha looked proud. She had clearly been waiting for Wayne to try her food, and his compliment meant more to her than she wanted to admit.

Lauren Notices Something Strange

But standing nearby was Lauren.

Lauren had been watching the entire exchange. Something about Wayne’s reaction did not sit right with her.

She already knew what the Mac and Cheese tasted like. She had tried it earlier, and she knew it was not exactly the best dish at the party. It was edible, but it definitely was not something she would go around calling amazing.

So why was Wayne suddenly praising it?

Lauren looked at Wayne, then at D’Nisha.

Lauren: “Really?”
Wayne: “What?”
Lauren: “You really think that’s good?”
Wayne: “Yeah. It’s good.”
Lauren: “You didn’t say that when I tried it.”

Wayne paused. D’Nisha looked between the two of them.

D’Nisha: “What are y’all talking about?”
Lauren: “Nothing. I’m just saying Wayne has an interesting taste today.”
Wayne: “Come on, Lauren. It’s not that serious.”

Lauren Starts Questioning Wayne

But Lauren wasn’t convinced. She continued watching him.

There was something different about the way Wayne was talking to D’Nisha. He was not simply complimenting the food. He seemed unusually careful about her feelings.

D’Nisha: “See? Wayne understands. I knew you would appreciate it.”
Wayne: “Of course. You put effort into it.”

Lauren caught that immediately.

She knew Wayne. And she knew that sometimes he would say something nice just to keep the peace. Maybe that was all this was.

Maybe Wayne simply didn’t want to embarrass D’Nisha after she had worked hard preparing the food.

But another possibility suddenly crossed Lauren’s mind. What if there was more to it?

Lauren stepped closer.

Lauren: “Wayne, can I ask you something?”
Wayne: “What’s up?”
Lauren: “Did you actually like the Mac and Cheese?”
Wayne: “Why do you keep asking me that?”
Lauren: “Because I know you.”
Wayne: “And?”
Lauren: “And I know when you’re pretending to like something.”

D’Nisha suddenly became quiet.

Wayne: “I’m not pretending.”
Lauren: “Then why are you going so hard trying to convince everybody that it tastes good?”
Wayne: “Because D’Nisha made it. I’m not about to sit here and make her feel bad about something she cooked.”
D’Nisha: “That’s actually sweet.”

Lauren heard those words and became even more suspicious.

Lauren: “So you’re saying you only complimented her because you didn’t want to hurt her feelings?”
Wayne: “Exactly.”

The Doubt Gets Bigger

Lauren stared at him for a few seconds.

Lauren: “Okay.”
Wayne: “Okay what?”
Lauren: “Nothing.”

But Lauren’s expression said there was definitely something.

She walked away, but the question stayed in her mind.

If Wayne was only protecting D’Nisha’s feelings, why did his reaction seem so genuine?

Why did he seem so interested in making sure D’Nisha felt appreciated?

And why did D’Nisha seem so happy specifically because Wayne liked her food?

Lauren knew she could be reading too much into the situation. There was no proof that anything romantic was happening between Wayne and D’Nisha.

But sometimes, doubt doesn’t need proof to begin.

The Question Lauren Couldn’t Ignore

Later, Lauren saw Wayne talking to D’Nisha again.

D’Nisha was laughing. Wayne was smiling.

Lauren watched from across the room. She couldn’t hear the conversation, but she could see the comfort between them.

Her mind immediately returned to the Mac and Cheese.

Maybe Wayne really had only been trying to make D’Nisha feel good.

Or maybe there was another reason he was being so careful with her.

Lauren finally decided she couldn’t keep wondering.

Lauren: “Wayne, I need to ask you something, and I want you to be completely honest with me.”
Wayne: “Ask.”

Lauren glanced at D’Nisha before looking back at him.

Lauren: “Is there something going on between you and D’Nisha?”

The room suddenly felt different.

Wayne’s expression changed. D’Nisha stopped smiling.

Lauren waited for an answer.

Wayne: “No. Nothing is going on.”
Lauren: “Then why are you acting different around her?”
Wayne: “I’m not acting different.”
Lauren: “Yes, you are.”
Wayne: “Lauren, I was just trying to be respectful. She cooked something, she wanted me to try it, and I wasn’t going to embarrass her.”
Lauren: “That’s all?”
Wayne: “That’s all.”
D’Nisha: “Lauren, I promise there’s nothing like that happening.”

The Truth Is Still Hidden

Lauren looked at both of them.

She wanted to believe them.

But something still didn’t feel right.

Maybe Wayne really was just being kind.

Maybe he genuinely wanted to protect D’Nisha’s feelings.

Or maybe there was something neither of them was ready to admit.

Lauren walked away, but one thought remained in her mind:

If Wayne was only trying to be nice, why did it feel like he was protecting D’Nisha from something much bigger than a bad plate of Mac and Cheese?

And if Lauren’s suspicion turned out to be true, this innocent food tasting could become the beginning of a much bigger problem.
