1. Charlotte Finally Breaks Her Silence

The office fell silent after Mr. Newburger finished explaining what had happened. Charlotte had listened carefully, but the disbelief on her face was impossible to hide. Finally, she could no longer remain quiet.

Her voice trembled as she asked, “What exactly did Larry say after you reminded him about the ten thousand dollars you contributed toward Bethany’s surgery?”

Mr. Newburger clenched his jaw. “I reminded him that I personally gave ten thousand dollars because I wanted Bethany to have the treatment she needed. I thought that would make him understand how serious this situation was.”

He paused before adding bitterly, “But Larry acted like none of it mattered.”

2. “Come Get Your Daughter”

Charlotte stared at him in disbelief as he repeated Larry’s words.

“Come get your daughter.”

Those words echoed through the room.

Charlotte’s expression hardened. “He actually said that? After everything Bethany has gone through?”

Mr. Newburger nodded slowly. “He didn’t sound concerned. He sounded finished. Like Bethany’s suffering had become an inconvenience he simply wanted removed from his life.”

Charlotte shook her head. “Bethany is already vulnerable. Whatever is happening between them, Larry knows she is going through an incredibly difficult moment. He could have shown compassion.”

3. Anger Turns Into Disappointment

Mr. Newburger began pacing across the office. His anger was still visible, but beneath it was something deeper—disappointment.

“I never expected this from Larry,” he admitted. “Whatever problems they have, I thought he would at least stand beside her when she was struggling.”

Charlotte looked toward the window, remembering everything Bethany had endured. “She needs people around her right now. She doesn’t need to feel abandoned.”

Mr. Newburger stopped walking. “That’s exactly what frightens me. I don’t know how Bethany is going to react when she realizes Larry has completely turned his back on her.”

The room became quiet again.

4. Charlotte Realizes Something Is Wrong

Suddenly, Charlotte grabbed her phone.

“We can’t just sit here talking about Bethany while she’s alone,” she said firmly. “We need to find out what is happening with her.”

She prepared to make a call, but before she could dial, she noticed something strange.

Mr. Newburger had stopped moving.

His face had become tense. His breathing sounded heavier, and one hand moved toward his chest as he struggled to steady himself.

“Dad?” Charlotte asked nervously.

He tried to respond, but his words came slowly.

“I’m… fine.”

But he clearly wasn’t.

5. The Sudden Collapse

Charlotte immediately stepped toward him.

“Sit down. Please.”

Mr. Newburger reached for the edge of the desk, but his balance suddenly failed. His face became pale as dizziness overwhelmed him.

Charlotte’s eyes widened.

“Dad!”

Before she could catch him, Mr. Newburger collapsed onto the office floor.

His phone slipped from his hand and landed beside him.

For a moment, Charlotte froze in horror.

Then panic took over.

“Mr. Newburger!”

She dropped to her knees beside him, desperately calling his name and trying to determine whether he was conscious.

6. Panic Replaces the Anger

Only minutes earlier, Charlotte had been furious with Larry. Now none of that mattered.

Her hands trembled as she looked at Mr. Newburger lying on the floor.

“Please wake up,” she whispered. “Please.”

She reached for her phone, realizing that the situation had become far more serious than a family argument.

Bethany was still somewhere at the center of the crisis, while now her father was lying helplessly on the floor.
