Mr. Neuberger had been thinking about his daughter Bethany for several days. He knew that she had not been feeling well and that her health had become a growing concern for the family. Despite everything that had happened between Bethany and her husband, Larry, Mr. Neuberger still wanted to make sure that his daughter was receiving the care and support she needed.

One afternoon, he decided to visit her.

When Mr. Neuberger arrived at Larry’s house, the atmosphere inside was unusually quiet. Bethany was resting, and her condition was still weak. As soon as she saw her father walk through the door, however, her expression changed. She became emotional because she knew that her father had come specifically to check on her.

Mr. Neuberger walked over to her and gave her a gentle hug. He could immediately see that she was struggling. He asked her how she was feeling and whether she had been taking her medication properly.

After spending some time with his daughter, Mr. Neuberger decided to speak with Larry. He wanted to keep the conversation calm because he had not come to start an argument. His only concern was Bethany’s health.

Mr. Neuberger explained that he had already given quite a lot of money for her treatment because she was his daughter and he wanted her to receive the care she needed.

Instead of appreciating the concern, Larry became irritated.

Mr. Neuberger was surprised by his response.

Larry shook his head and told him that if he cared so much about Bethany, he should take her away.

Bethany, who had been listening from nearby, became visibly upset.

But Larry did not take back his words. The room became painfully quiet.

Mr. Neuberger could have argued. He could have demanded an explanation. Instead, he remained quiet. He looked at Bethany and saw the sadness in her eyes.

He walked toward the door. He did not want Bethany to see how deeply Larry’s words had affected him. As a father, hearing that his daughter might be abandoned while she was already struggling with her health was extremely painful.

Mr. Neuberger stepped outside and walked toward his car. He stood beside the vehicle for a few seconds, holding onto the door. Then suddenly, he felt intense pain in his chest.

His breathing became difficult. He placed one hand against his chest and tried to steady himself, but his legs became weak. Within moments, he collapsed onto the ground beside his car.

Inside the house, Bethany heard a noise.

She slowly made her way toward the door. Despite feeling sick herself, she was immediately worried when she saw her father lying on the ground.

Her voice broke as she rushed toward him. Larry followed her outside and froze when he saw Mr. Neuberger on the ground.

Mr. Neuberger looked weak and barely responded. Bethany began crying harder. Larry quickly moved toward Mr. Neuberger and helped support him while they tried to get emergency assistance.

For the first time, Larry seemed to realize how serious the situation had become. The argument from moments earlier suddenly felt completely meaningless. His anger had disappeared, replaced by fear and regret.

Only minutes earlier, Mr. Neuberger had been worried about his daughter’s future. He had come to the house because he wanted someone to care for Bethany. Now Bethany was the one desperately hoping that her father would be okay.

The painful words Larry had spoken kept replaying in his mind. Mr. Neuberger had never argued with him. He had simply walked away with a broken heart.

As Bethany cried beside her father, Larry realized that some words could cause damage long after an argument was over.
