Bethany’s Last Hope

1. The News That Shattered Her

The moment Bethany learned that Larry intended to end their marriage, the world seemed to tilt and collapse around her. She remained motionless for several long seconds, her mind refusing to accept the words she had just heard. Then a single desperate idea rose through the fog of shock—Sharra. Only Sharra might still hold the power to change Larry’s mind.

Larry had always respected Sharra’s opinion more than anyone else’s. If Sharra would only speak on her behalf, Bethany believed there was still a chance he might reconsider. Without delaying another second, she rushed through the evening streets toward Sharra’s home.

When the door opened, Sharra froze at the sight of Bethany’s tear-streaked face. Before a single question could leave Sharra’s lips, Bethany dropped to her knees and clutched at her feet in raw desperation.

2. Bethany Begs for Mercy

“Sharra, I’m begging you—please forgive me,” Bethany sobbed. “Talk to Larry. Tell him not to leave me. I can’t survive without him.”

Sharra reached down to lift her up, but Bethany clung tighter to her hands, refusing to rise.

“You know he listens to you,” Bethany pleaded between broken breaths. “Just speak to him once. Tell him to stay. I’ll do anything you ask—give you anything you want—if only you’ll stop this divorce.”

Sharra stood in silence, her expression unreadable. There was no trace of satisfaction on her face, even though Bethany’s agony might once have seemed like justice. Instead, her eyes grew distant as old memories slowly returned.

3. Sharra Reminds Her of the Past

“Bethany,” Sharra said at last, her voice quiet but firm, “do you remember how pleased you were when Larry left me? You never once asked how much it hurt. You never tried to understand what it felt like to lose the person you loved most.”

Bethany’s head sank lower. Tears continued to fall onto the floor.

“You worked hard to turn him against me,” Sharra continued. “You planted doubts. You twisted words. You helped destroy what we had. And now that the same destruction has reached your own door, you finally understand the pain.”

“I know I was wrong,” Bethany whispered. “I see it clearly now. I did awful things. But I can’t lose him, Sharra. I’ll change—everything. Just give me one chance.”

4. One Last Promise

Sharra remained still for a long moment before answering. “I can’t promise that Larry will listen. But I will speak to him. The choice, in the end, will still be his alone.”

Bethany seized her hands again with desperate hope.

“I’ll give you whatever you want,” she said. “Anything. Just keep him from divorcing me.”

Sharra met her eyes directly. “Bethany, you are living with the results of your own choices. If you truly mean to change, there may still be something left to protect. But remember this—words alone will never bring someone back. You must prove the change is real.”

5. The Voice Behind the Door

Bethany wiped her face and nodded. For the first time she fully grasped that the harm she had once caused had finally circled back to her.

Sharra repeated her promise to speak with Larry. A fragile spark of hope appeared in Bethany’s eyes as she turned slowly toward the exit.

Just as her hand touched the door, a low, urgent voice drifted from somewhere deeper inside the house.

“Sharra… don’t tell her that I’m here.”

Bethany stopped cold.

Her heart slammed against her ribs. She turned back toward Sharra. The color had drained from Sharra’s face in an instant.

Bethany stared at the closed inner door, confusion and dread rising together. Who was hiding inside that room? Why had they demanded secrecy? And what, if anything, did this unseen person know about Larry’s decision to leave?

The thin hope of saving her marriage had suddenly twisted into something far darker—a secret that waited just beyond the door, ready to change everything.
