The Divorce He Finally Said
đź’” THE DIVORCE HE FINALLY SAID đź’”
A Story of Truth, Silence & Difficult Decisions
INT. LARRY AND BETHANY’S LIVING ROOM — EVENING
The house is unusually quiet.
Larry sits alone on the couch, staring down at his phone. His expression is tired, almost distracted.
A few papers are scattered across the coffee table. He knows something is coming. Something he has been putting off.
His phone suddenly rings. Larry looks at the screen. PURNELL.
Larry takes a slow breath and answers.
LARRY
Hey, Purnell. What’s going on?
Purnell’s voice comes through the phone, serious and direct.
PURNELL
Larry, I need to ask you something.
Larry leans back against the couch.
LARRY
What is it?
There is a brief silence on the other end.
PURNELL
Have you given Bethany the divorce papers yet?
Larry’s face immediately changes. He looks toward the papers sitting on the table.
LARRY
No.
PURNELL
No?
LARRY
Not yet.
Larry rubs his forehead, clearly frustrated with himself.
PURNELL
Larry, what’s taking so long?
LARRY
Honestly, I’ve been thinking about it.
PURNELL
Thinking about it isn’t the same as doing it.
LARRY
I know.
He pauses. His eyes remain fixed on the papers.
LARRY
I was thinking the divorce papers would come tomorrow. Once they get here, I’m going to give them to Bethany.
PURNELL
So you’re saying tomorrow is the day?
LARRY
Yeah.
His voice is calm, but there is tension underneath it.
LARRY
I’ve already made my decision. I just need to finish what I started.
Behind Larry, the hallway remains dark. Neither man realizes Bethany has quietly entered the room. She stops when she hears her name. Her expression changes. She doesn’t move. She simply listens.
PURNELL
Larry, you understand that once you hand those papers to her, everything changes.
LARRY
I understand.
Bethany’s eyes widen. She takes a small step backward, but she stays close enough to hear everything.
PURNELL
Then don’t delay it anymore.
LARRY
I’m not trying to delay anything, Purnell.
PURNELL
Then what are you waiting for?
LARRY
The papers.
A long silence follows. Bethany slowly covers her mouth with her hand. She looks stunned.
BETHANY
Divorce papers…
LARRY
Once they arrive tomorrow, I’ll give them to her.
Bethany’s eyes fill with emotion. She takes another step back. A floorboard makes a faint sound.
LARRY
Bethany?
The line goes quiet for a second. Larry stands.
LARRY
Bethany, are you there?
Bethany doesn’t answer. She slowly walks into the room. Larry sees her face. He immediately realizes what happened. She heard everything.
LARRY
Bethany…
Bethany looks directly at him. Her voice is quiet.
BETHANY
How long were you planning to wait?
LARRY
What?
BETHANY
I heard you.
Larry slowly lowers the phone.
LARRY
Bethany, you weren’t supposed to hear that conversation.
BETHANY
But I did.
Her expression hardens.
LARRY
I was going to tell you.
BETHANY
When?
Larry doesn’t answer immediately. Bethany waits.
BETHANY
Tomorrow?
Larry looks away.
LARRY
Yes.
BETHANY
So tomorrow was always the plan?
LARRY
The papers haven’t even arrived yet.
BETHANY
But you already decided.
Larry takes a step toward her.
LARRY
Bethany, listen to me.
BETHANY
No.
Larry stops.
BETHANY
I don’t need another explanation.
She looks toward the coffee table.
BETHANY
You’ve already made your decision.
LARRY
Yes, I have.
Bethany looks at him, hurt but trying not to show it.
BETHANY
And you were just going to put those papers in my hands tomorrow like it was nothing?
LARRY
That’s not what I meant.
BETHANY
Then what did you mean?
Larry struggles to find the right words.
LARRY
I didn’t want another argument.
BETHANY
So you decided silence was easier?
Larry looks down. Bethany slowly walks toward the couch. She looks at the papers again.
BETHANY
You know what’s strange?
LARRY
BETHANY
I heard you talking about the divorce before you ever talked to me about it.
Larry’s face falls.
LARRY
I was trying to figure out the right way to handle it.
BETHANY
There is no perfect way.
BETHANY
But there is an honest way.
LARRY
You’re right.
Bethany looks surprised by his answer. Larry sits down.
LARRY
I should have told you myself.
BETHANY
Then tell me now.
Larry looks up at her. The room becomes completely silent.
LARRY
I want the divorce.
Bethany’s expression changes. Even though she already knew, hearing the words directly still hurts. She looks away.
BETHANY
So that’s it?
LARRY
I think we’ve reached the point where we both need to move forward.
BETHANY
You make it sound so simple.
LARRY
It’s not simple.
Larry’s voice becomes softer.
LARRY
It’s one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made.
BETHANY
Then why does it feel like you’ve already moved on?
Larry doesn’t answer. The phone is still in his hand. Purnell remains silently connected on the call.
PURNELL
Larry?
LARRY
I’m still here.
Purnell realizes Bethany has heard everything.
PURNELL
I think you two need to talk.
LARRY
Yeah.
Purnell ends the call. Larry places the phone on the table. Bethany looks at him.
BETHANY
When those papers arrive tomorrow…
She pauses.
BETHANY
…you’re really going to give them to me?
LARRY
Yes.
Bethany takes a shaky breath.
BETHANY
Then tomorrow changes everything.
LARRY
Maybe.
Bethany turns toward the hallway. Before leaving, she stops. She looks back at Larry one final time.
BETHANY
I wish I had heard it from you first.
She walks away. Larry remains seated, staring at the floor. The camera slowly pulls back.
