BROOKE REFUSES COLLEGE — LARRY AND SHARRA TAKE ACTION

A dramatic family confrontation about college, responsibility, and Brooke’s future

INT. LARRY’S HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – MORNING

Morning sunlight fills Larry’s living room. The house is unusually quiet, but there is a strange tension in the air. Brooke sits on the couch with her phone in her hand. Her college backpack is lying untouched near the front door.

Brooke keeps staring at the screen, avoiding the thought of going to college. She looks nervous and frustrated at the same time.

Suddenly, a car pulls into the driveway.

The front door opens.

LARRY walks into the house with a serious expression. The moment he sees Brooke sitting on the couch and notices the untouched backpack, his face becomes stern.

LARRY

Are you going to college or not?

Brooke slowly looks up at him.

BROOKE

No. I’m not going.

Larry pauses. He cannot believe what he has just heard.

LARRY

What did you just say?

BROOKE

I said I’m not going to college.

Larry points toward her backpack.

LARRY

You have classes. You have responsibilities. You cannot simply decide that you’re not going.

Brooke stands up, clearly irritated.

BROOKE

I don’t want to go, Larry. I already told you that.

Larry takes a deep breath, trying to control his anger.

LARRY

We’ve already had this conversation. Are you really willing to throw away your education?

BROOKE

I’m not throwing anything away. I just don’t want to go right now.

Larry shakes his head.

LARRY

“Not right now” keeps becoming your excuse, Brooke. At some point, you have to make a decision about your future.

Brooke’s eyes fill with frustration.

BROOKE

You don’t understand me!

The room becomes silent.

Larry realizes that arguing with Brooke is not changing her mind. He pulls out his phone.

LARRY

Fine. If you won’t listen to me, I’m calling Sharra.

Brooke’s eyes widen.

BROOKE

Why are you calling her?

LARRY

Because maybe she’ll be able to get through to you.

Larry calls Sharra and explains the situation. He asks her to come over and talk to Brooke about college.

EXT. LARRY’S HOUSE – LATER

A short time later, Sharra’s car pulls into the driveway.

Sharra steps out and walks toward the house with a serious expression. She already knows Brooke is refusing to attend college.

The front door opens, and Larry lets her inside.

SHARRA

Where is Brooke?

LARRY

She’s in the living room. She refuses to go to college.

Sharra nods and walks toward the living room.

INT. LARRY’S HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – CONTINUOUS

Brooke sees Sharra enter and immediately realizes why she has come.

BROOKE

I already know why you’re here.

SHARRA

Then you already know what we’re going to talk about.

Sharra sits across from Brooke.

SHARRA

Larry told me you’re refusing to go to college. Why?

BROOKE

Because I don’t want to go.

SHARRA

Brooke, college is important. You cannot simply walk away from your future because you’re upset.

BROOKE

You don’t know what I’m going through.

SHARRA

Then tell me. What is really bothering you?

Brooke looks down and becomes quiet.

She doesn’t answer.

Sharra’s patience begins to disappear.

SHARRA

Brooke, we’re trying to help you. But you have to communicate with us.

BROOKE

Maybe I don’t need everybody controlling my life!

Larry looks shocked by her words.

LARRY

Nobody is trying to control your life.

BROOKE

That’s exactly what it feels like!

Sharra stands up. She is now visibly frustrated.

THE CONFRONTATION

Sharra moves toward Brooke and gestures toward the front door.

SHARRA

Come on. We’re going outside.

Brooke refuses to move.

BROOKE

No. I’m staying here.

Sharra becomes angry and firmly takes Brooke by the arm, guiding her toward the doorway.

BROOKE

Let go of me!

SHARRA

Then stop fighting everyone who is trying to help you!

Larry follows them toward the door, concerned by the escalating argument.

Sharra brings Brooke outside. The tension between them is obvious.

EXT. LARRY’S HOUSE – DRIVEWAY – CONTINUOUS

Brooke turns toward Sharra, angry and emotional.

SHARRA

I’m asking you one more time. Are you going to college willingly, or are you going to make everybody keep fighting with you?

BROOKE

I said I’m not going!

Sharra looks at Brooke carefully. Beneath Brooke’s anger, she notices fear.

SHARRA

Why are you so afraid to take this step?

Brooke looks away. Her anger slowly turns into sadness.

BROOKE

Because nobody understands what I’m feeling.

Larry steps closer.

LARRY

Then tell us, Brooke. We can’t understand if you won’t talk to us.

Brooke finally looks at him.

BROOKE

I’m scared I’m going to fail.

Silence fills the driveway.

Larry’s anger disappears immediately.

LARRY

Brooke, failing doesn’t mean your life is over.

BROOKE

But everyone expects me to succeed.

LARRY

We expect you to try. That’s different.

Sharra nods.

SHARRA

You don’t have to figure out your entire future today. But you cannot let fear make every decision for you.

Brooke wipes away a tear.

A CHANGE OF HEART

The three eventually return inside.

Brooke sits quietly on the couch. Larry sits across from her while Sharra stands nearby.

The shouting has stopped.

For the first time, everyone is willing to listen.

LARRY

Let’s talk about what is really bothering you instead of arguing.

BROOKE

I feel like everyone expects me to know exactly what I’m doing with my life.

SHARRA

You don’t have to know everything right now.

Brooke looks at Sharra.

SHARRA

But you do have to take responsibility for your choices. If college is difficult, we can help you find a way to handle it.

Brooke takes a deep breath.

BROOKE

What if I need more time?

LARRY

Then we’ll talk about your options. But running away isn’t the answer.

Brooke slowly nods.

The family tension begins to fade.

What started as a heated argument about college has turned into an honest conversation about Brooke’s fears, dreams, and future.

Larry looks at Brooke with a calmer expression.

LARRY

We’re not against you, Brooke. We’re trying to stand beside you.

Brooke looks at Larry and Sharra.

She doesn’t have all the answers yet, but for the first time, she feels heard.

The future is still uncertain, but the family has finally opened the door to understanding.

TO BE CONTINUED…

Will Brooke finally agree to attend college, or will she choose a different path for her future?
