JADEN REFUSES TO LET BROOKE STAY
SCENE 1 — OUTSIDE LYNETTE’S HOUSE — EVENING
The sun is beginning to set over the quiet neighborhood.
A car slowly pulls into the driveway.
Lynette sits behind the wheel. Brooke sits quietly in the passenger seat, staring out the window.
She looks exhausted. Her eyes are filled with emotion.
LYNETTE
You don’t have to worry about anything right now.
BROOKE
Are you sure this is okay?
LYNETTE
Yes. You’re not going back to a place where you don’t feel safe or wanted.
Brooke takes a deep breath.
The car comes to a stop. Lynette turns off the engine.
LYNETTE
Come on. Let’s go inside.
Brooke slowly opens the door. They step out of the car.
Lynette grabs Brooke’s bag from the back seat. Brooke follows her toward the front door.
Neither of them notices someone watching from inside.
Jaden is standing near the window. He sees Brooke.
His expression immediately changes. His eyes widen.
He looks confused. Then angry.
JADEN
What is she doing here?
Jaden quickly walks away from the window.
SCENE 2 — LYNETTE’S HOUSE — LIVING ROOM — CONTINUOUS
Lynette places Brooke’s bag near the couch.
Brooke stands awkwardly in the middle of the room.
LYNETTE
You can make yourself comfortable.
BROOKE
Thank you, Lynette.
Before Lynette can respond, heavy footsteps come from the hallway.
Jaden enters the living room.
JADEN
Mom.
LYNETTE
Yes?
JADEN
What is she doing here?
Brooke looks down. Lynette remains calm.
LYNETTE
Jaden, calm down.
JADEN
No. I’m asking a simple question.
JADEN
Why is Brooke in our house?
Lynette takes a breath. She knows this conversation isn’t going to be easy.
LYNETTE
Because Brooke is going to stay here with us.
Jaden freezes. For a moment, the room becomes completely silent.
JADEN
What?
LYNETTE
You heard me.
JADEN
She’s staying here?
LYNETTE
Yes.
JADEN
No, Mom.
JADEN
I said no.
Brooke looks uncomfortable. She takes a small step backward.
SCENE 3 — THE ARGUMENT BEGINS
JADEN
You didn’t even ask me.
LYNETTE
I don’t need permission to help somebody who needs a place to stay.
JADEN
This is my home too!
LYNETTE
And I understand that.
JADEN
Then why would you bring her here?
LYNETTE
Because she needs somewhere safe.
JADEN
There are plenty of other places she can go.
BROOKE
I didn’t ask her to bring me here.
JADEN
Then you shouldn’t be here.
Lynette steps between them.
LYNETTE
Jaden, that’s enough.
JADEN
No, Mom. You don’t understand.
LYNETTE
Then explain it without yelling.
JADEN
I don’t want her living here.
LYNETTE
You don’t have to like the situation. But you will respect her.
JADEN
I’m not respecting this.
SCENE 4 — BROOKE FEELS UNWELCOME
Brooke quietly picks up her bag and looks toward the front door.
BROOKE
Maybe I should leave.
LYNETTE
No.
BROOKE
I don’t want to cause problems between you and your son.
LYNETTE
You’re not causing anything.
LYNETTE
You’re staying.
JADEN
Mom, listen to yourself.
JADEN
You’re choosing her over me.
LYNETTE
This isn’t about choosing sides.
JADEN
It feels like it.
Lynette walks closer to him, trying to make him understand.
LYNETTE
Jaden, you’re my son. Nothing will ever change that.
LYNETTE
But that doesn’t mean I will turn my back on someone who needs help.
SCENE 5 — JADEN CROSSES THE LINE
Jaden walks toward Brooke.
Lynette immediately notices.
LYNETTE
Jaden, don’t.
JADEN
You need to leave.
BROOKE
I’m not trying to cause trouble.
JADEN
Then leave.
Brooke takes a step back.
Jaden reaches forward and pushes Brooke.
Brooke stumbles backward.
LYNETTE
JADEN!
Lynette rushes toward Brooke and makes sure she is okay.
LYNETTE
Are you hurt?
BROOKE
I’m okay.
LYNETTE
What is wrong with you?
JADEN
I told her I don’t want her here!
LYNETTE
That does not give you the right to put your hands on her!
LYNETTE
You will never push someone in this house again.
Jaden clenches his jaw.
JADEN
I’m not going to let her stay here.
LYNETTE
You don’t get to make that decision.
JADEN
Then what am I supposed to do?
LYNETTE
You can either respect my decision or remove yourself from the situation.
JADEN
You’re serious?
LYNETTE
Completely serious.
SCENE 6 — THE ULTIMATUM
JADEN
So she’s really staying?
LYNETTE
Yes.
JADEN
Even after everything?
LYNETTE
Especially now.
Brooke wipes a tear from her cheek.
BROOKE
Lynette, maybe I really should go.
LYNETTE
No, Brooke.
LYNETTE
You don’t have to run away every time someone gets angry with you.
BROOKE
I’m just tired.
LYNETTE
I know.
Lynette pulls Brooke into a brief hug.
JADEN
I’m not okay with this.
LYNETTE
You don’t have to be okay with it tonight.
LYNETTE
But you do have to respect the rules of this house.
Jaden says nothing. He walks away.
SCENE 7 — A NEW BEGINNING
The house becomes quiet again.
LYNETTE
Come on.
Brooke nods. They walk toward the guest room.
Lynette opens the door. The room is clean and comfortable.
A bed is made. A small lamp sits on the nightstand.
BROOKE
You really prepared this for me?
LYNETTE
I wanted you to have somewhere peaceful.
BROOKE
Thank you.
LYNETTE
You don’t have to thank me.
Outside the room, Jaden stands silently in the hallway.
He hears everything.
His expression changes.
He looks toward Brooke’s room.
For a moment, the anger disappears from his face.
But he still looks conflicted.
Jaden slowly walks away.
LYNETTE
Whatever happens next, we’re going to figure it out.
BROOKE
I hope so.
LYNETTE
You have a place here now.
Brooke takes a deep breath. For the first time in a long time,
she feels like she might actually be safe.
But down the hallway, Jaden’s anger is still building.
And his next move could change everything.
