Larry Apologizes to Bethany, But His Excuse Makes Her Furious
A dramatic hospital confrontation filled with regret, anger, and unanswered questions.
SCENE 1 — HOSPITAL ROOM
The hospital room is quiet except for the soft beeping of medical equipment. Bethany sits on the hospital bed, looking exhausted and emotionally drained. She stares toward the window, lost in thought.
The door slowly opens.
Larry walks into the room. He looks nervous, and his steps are slow. He seems unsure about what to say.
Bethany notices him immediately. Her expression changes as she looks at him with disappointment and anger.
LARRY:
“Bethany… I came to see you.”
Bethany says nothing.
Larry takes a few steps closer to the bed and lowers his head, clearly feeling guilty.
LARRY:
“I know you’re upset with me, and honestly, I understand why. I should have come here sooner. I should have been here when you needed me.”
Bethany finally looks directly at him. Her eyes are filled with frustration.
LARRY:
“I’m sorry that I couldn’t come to see you earlier. I sincerely apologize, Bethany.”
SCENE 2 — BETHANY’S ANGER
Larry clasps his hands together, hoping Bethany will accept his apology. But Bethany remains silent.
For a moment, the room becomes completely quiet.
Bethany slowly shakes her head and adjusts herself on the hospital bed. Her voice is calm at first, but the anger underneath it is obvious.
BETHANY:
“So that’s it? You came all the way here just to tell me you’re sorry?”
Larry looks confused.
LARRY:
“I came because I wanted to apologize to you in person. I didn’t want you to think that I didn’t care about you.”
Bethany lets out a bitter laugh.
BETHANY:
“You didn’t want me to think you didn’t care? Larry, your actions already told me everything I needed to know.”
Larry looks down. He realizes that Bethany is deeply hurt.
LARRY:
“I know I made a mistake. But I didn’t intentionally stay away from you. There were things happening that made it difficult for me to come.”
Bethany immediately becomes suspicious.
SCENE 3 — THE EXCUSE
Bethany studies Larry’s face. She expects an honest answer.
BETHANY:
“Really? Then tell me something, Larry. What excuse are you going to make now for not coming to the hospital?”
Larry hesitates.
He takes a deep breath before finally answering.
LARRY:
“I couldn’t come because of Brooke.”
Bethany’s expression changes instantly. Her eyes widen in disbelief. The anger she had been trying to control suddenly returns.
BETHANY:
“Brooke? That’s your excuse?”
Larry tries to explain.
LARRY:
“Bethany, please let me explain. It wasn’t that simple. I had to deal with something involving Brooke.”
Bethany immediately interrupts him.
BETHANY:
“No! Don’t do that. Don’t come into my hospital room, apologize to me, and then immediately bring Brooke into the conversation.”
SCENE 4 — BETHANY CONFRONTS LARRY
Larry takes a step back. He can see how deeply hurt Bethany has become.
LARRY:
“I’m not trying to hurt you. I’m just telling you what happened.”
BETHANY:
“But that’s exactly what you’re doing! Every time you make a mistake, there is another explanation. Another problem. Another person. And somehow, Brooke’s name always appears in the middle of everything.”
Larry looks uncomfortable.
LARRY:
“I understand why you’re angry. But Brooke needed attention at the time. I couldn’t simply ignore what was happening.”
Bethany looks away for a moment. She takes a deep breath, trying to control her emotions.
BETHANY:
“And what about me? Didn’t I need you too?”
Larry has no immediate answer.
Bethany turns back toward him.
BETHANY:
“I was sitting here in this hospital room wondering where you were. I kept thinking maybe something happened to you. Maybe you were busy. Maybe you were dealing with an emergency. But I never imagined that once again, I would hear Brooke’s name.”
SCENE 5 — LARRY TRIES TO EXPLAIN
Larry looks deeply ashamed. He realizes that his apology has not gone the way he expected.
LARRY:
“Bethany, I’m sorry. I should have handled everything differently.”
BETHANY:
“You should have. You should have called me. You should have told me what was happening. You should have made me feel like I mattered.”
Her voice begins to tremble.
LARRY:
“I never wanted you to feel like you didn’t matter. You mean a lot to me.”
BETHANY:
“Then why don’t your actions show it?”
Larry becomes silent.
Bethany wipes away a tear and tries to remain strong.
LARRY:
“I made a bad decision. I should have found a way to come here. Even if Brooke needed me, I should have called you and explained everything. I know that now.”
SCENE 6 — BETHANY’S WARNING
Bethany slowly nods.
BETHANY:
“At least you’re finally admitting it.”
Larry’s eyes become emotional.
LARRY:
“I don’t want us to keep fighting. I came here because I want to make things right. I don’t want you to think that I don’t care about you.”
Bethany remains guarded.
BETHANY:
“An apology doesn’t automatically fix everything, Larry. Sometimes saying sorry is easy. Changing your behavior is the difficult part.”
Larry nods.
LARRY:
“You’re right. And I’m willing to prove it.”
SCENE 7 — AN UNEXPECTED QUESTION
For a moment, neither of them speaks.
Then Bethany asks a question that catches Larry off guard.
BETHANY:
“Larry… If you had to choose between coming here for me and dealing with Brooke, what would you choose now?”
Larry looks at her and thinks carefully before answering.
LARRY:
“I would make sure you weren’t left wondering where I was. I would communicate with you. And I would never make you feel abandoned again.”
Bethany studies his face, trying to determine whether he truly means it.
BETHANY:
“That’s what I wanted to hear. But remember, Larry… Words are only the beginning.”
LARRY:
“I know. And I’m going to prove it with my actions.”
SCENE 8 — A PAINFUL SILENCE
Larry stands beside the hospital bed. He knows that forgiveness will not come instantly.
LARRY:
“Can you forgive me someday?”
Bethany doesn’t answer immediately.
BETHANY:
“I don’t know. I’m still hurt. And I’m still angry. But I’m listening to what you’re saying. That’s all I can give you right now.”
Larry nods respectfully.
LARRY:
“I’ll accept that.”
Bethany takes a deep breath.
BETHANY:
“And Larry… don’t make me regret giving you another chance to explain yourself.”
LARRY:
“I won’t.”
SCENE 9 — THE MOMENT OF TRUTH
Larry reaches toward Bethany but stops before touching her. He respects her space.
LARRY:
“I’m truly sorry, Bethany. Not because you caught me. Not because you’re angry. I’m sorry because I hurt you.”
Bethany’s expression softens slightly.
For the first time since Larry entered the room, she doesn’t look completely furious.
BETHANY:
“Then remember how this moment feels. Remember how hurt I was. And next time, think before you make a decision.”
LARRY:
“I will.”
Bethany looks at him one last time.
BETHANY:
“We’ll see.”
Larry takes a slow breath. He knows that Bethany’s trust cannot be repaired with one apology.
He turns toward the door, then stops.
LARRY:
“I’ll come back tomorrow.”
Bethany looks at him.
BETHANY:
“If you say you’re coming… come.”
LARRY:
“I promise.”
He slowly walks out of the hospital room.
Bethany watches the door close behind him. She remains silent.
Her anger is still there, but now something else is mixed with it—uncertainty.
She wonders whether Larry truly means what he said or whether this is simply another promise that will eventually be broken.
