LAUREN TAKES DAN TO COURT

INT. COURTHOUSE – HALLWAY – MORNING

The courthouse is busy.

People move through the hallway, attorneys speak quietly, and courtroom doors open and close.

LAUREN walks through the crowd with determination.

Her expression is tired, but she refuses to look back.

She stops outside a courtroom.

She takes a deep breath.

Then she walks inside.

INT. COURTROOM – MORNING

The courtroom settles as the JUDGE enters.

Everyone rises.

Lauren sits at one side of the room.

DAN sits several seats away.

He looks confident.

Lauren looks straight ahead.

The judge takes his seat.

JUDGE

You may be seated.

Everyone sits.

The judge looks down at the documents in front of him.

Then he looks toward Lauren.

JUDGE

Ms. Lauren, I understand you requested this hearing because of an ongoing personal dispute.

Lauren nods.

She takes a breath.

LAUREN

Yes, Your Honor.

I didn’t want things to get this far.

But I feel like I have no choice anymore.

Dan shifts in his chair.

The judge notices.

JUDGE

Take your time.

Lauren looks toward Dan for a moment.

Then she turns back to the judge.

LAUREN

Dan keeps telling me how I should live my life.

Who I should talk to.

Where I should go.

Who I should spend time with.

And I’m tired of it.

Dan shakes his head.

DAN

That’s not what I’m doing.

Lauren looks at him.

LAUREN

Then what are you doing?

Dan doesn’t answer immediately.

The judge raises a hand.

JUDGE

Mr. Dan, you will have an opportunity to speak.

Dan nods.

Lauren continues.

LAUREN

I have tried talking to him.

I tried explaining myself.

I tried keeping the peace.

But every time I make a decision for myself, Dan has something to say.

He acts like I don’t have the right to choose my own life.

The courtroom becomes quiet.

JUDGE

What exactly are you asking the court to do?

Lauren gathers her thoughts.

LAUREN

I want him to understand that my life belongs to me.

I decide what I do.

I decide who I spend time with.

And I decide what kind of future I want.

She pauses.

Her voice becomes more emotional.

LAUREN

I don’t want to be controlled anymore.

Dan looks down.

Lauren wipes a tear from the corner of her eye.

LAUREN

I’m not here because I hate him.

I’m here because I need peace.

DAN

Your Honor, I never wanted her to feel that way.

Lauren looks toward him.

Dan’s expression has changed.

He no longer looks confident.

DAN

I thought I was protecting her.

I thought I was doing the right thing.

But maybe I went too far.

Lauren listens silently.

DAN

I was afraid of losing her.

So I kept trying to hold on.

The judge leans forward.

JUDGE

Mr. Dan, caring about someone does not give you control over their choices.

Dan nods slowly.

JUDGE

Adults have the right to make their own decisions.

Lauren takes a deep breath.

For the first time that morning, her shoulders relax.

LAUREN

That’s all I’ve been trying to say.

I need Dan to understand that.

I can’t live my life constantly explaining myself.

Dan looks at her.

DAN

What do you want from me?

Lauren thinks for a moment.

LAUREN

Distance.

Respect.

And the freedom to make my own choices.

Dan looks down at the table.

The words clearly affect him.

INT. COURTHOUSE – HALLWAY – LATER

The hearing ends.

Lauren walks out of the courtroom.

She stops near a large window.

Sunlight falls across her face.

She closes her eyes for a moment.

She finally feels like she can breathe.

Footsteps approach.

Dan exits the courtroom.

He stops several feet away from her.

Neither speaks.

Finally, Dan breaks the silence.

DAN

Lauren.

She turns around.

LAUREN

What?

DAN

I heard what you said.

Lauren waits.

DAN

I didn’t realize how much pressure I was putting on you.

Lauren looks at him carefully.

LAUREN

You should have listened when I told you before.

Dan nods.

DAN

You’re right.

A quiet moment passes.

DAN

I can’t promise I’ll understand every decision you make.

Lauren raises an eyebrow.

DAN

But I can promise I’ll respect that they’re yours.

Lauren’s expression softens slightly.

LAUREN

That’s all I wanted.

Dan nods.

He steps back.

Lauren turns toward the courthouse exit.

EXT. COURTHOUSE – MORNING

Lauren walks down the courthouse steps.

The city moves around her.

Cars pass.

People hurry down the sidewalk.

But Lauren feels strangely calm.

Her phone rings.

She looks at the screen.

It’s WAYNE.

She answers.

LAUREN

Hey.

WAYNE

Are you okay?

Lauren looks back at the courthouse.

LAUREN

Yeah.

Actually…

I think I finally stood up for myself.

Wayne smiles through the phone.

WAYNE

Good.

You needed to.

Lauren takes another step.

LAUREN

I spent too much time worrying about what everyone else wanted from me.

She looks toward the street.

LAUREN

Today I chose myself.

INT. WAYNE’S HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – DAY

Wayne sits on the couch, listening carefully.

Anthony and Delicia are nearby.

Wayne lowers his phone.

WAYNE

Lauren went to court.

Anthony looks surprised.

ANTHONY

Because of Dan?

Wayne nods.

WAYNE

She finally told the judge everything.

Delicia sits forward.

DELICIA

Is she okay?

WAYNE

She’s okay.

Actually, she sounded stronger than ever.

Anthony smiles.

ANTHONY

Maybe Dan finally understands he can’t make every decision for her.

Wayne nods.

WAYNE

That’s exactly what Lauren wanted him to understand.

EXT. CITY STREET – DAY

Lauren continues walking.

She passes storefronts and busy sidewalks.

Her phone remains in her hand.

She stops at a crosswalk.

The light changes.

She walks forward.

Her expression is peaceful.

For so long, she had felt like every choice required someone else’s approval.

Today was different.

She had finally spoken for herself.

INT. DAN’S HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – AFTERNOON

Dan sits alone.

The room is quiet.

He looks at his phone.

Lauren’s name is on the screen.

He hesitates.

Then he places the phone down.

He remembers her words.

“My life is mine.”

Dan slowly leans back.

For the first time, he realizes that holding onto someone too tightly can push them away.

EXT. PARK – EVENING

Lauren sits on a bench.

The sun begins to set.

Wayne approaches.

Lauren looks up and smiles.

WAYNE

You look different.

Lauren laughs softly.

LAUREN

Different how?

WAYNE

Like you finally got something off your chest.

Lauren looks toward the sunset.

LAUREN

I did.

Wayne sits beside her.

WAYNE

So what’s next?

Lauren smiles.

LAUREN

I don’t know yet.

Wayne looks at her.

WAYNE

And that’s okay?

Lauren nods.

LAUREN

Yeah.

Because for once, I get to decide.

Wayne smiles.

Lauren looks toward the setting sun.

She takes a deep breath.

No fear.
No hesitation.
Just freedom.

FADE OUT.
