Brooke’s Parents Finally Face the Truth
The Room Fell Silent
The atmosphere inside the room suddenly became heavy. Larry stood quietly, while Sharra watched Bethany with a defensive expression. Bethany was visibly angry, but beneath her anger was deep sadness. She had watched Brooke struggle emotionally, and now she could no longer remain silent.
Bethany looked directly at Larry and Sharra before speaking. Her voice trembled as she explained that Brooke had needed her parents long before everything became a crisis.
Bethany Blames Both Parents
“You two are not good parents,” Bethany said, her voice filled with frustration and pain. “Brooke was your only daughter, yet you failed to pay attention to what was really happening in her life.”
Bethany reminded them that Brooke had spent so much time with Isaiah that she became deeply emotionally attached to him. Her relationship with him had become one of the most important parts of her life, but neither Larry nor Sharra seemed to recognize how serious that attachment had become.
When Isaiah eventually left Brooke, everything changed. Brooke was devastated. She stopped going to school, lost interest in college, and sometimes even left home because she did not know how to deal with what she was feeling.
“Did You Ever Ask Her?”
Bethany’s eyes filled with emotion as she continued. “What did you two do? Did you ever really sit down with her and ask what she was going through? Did you ever take the time to understand what was happening in her heart?”
Larry lowered his eyes. Bethany’s words were painful because there was truth behind them. Brooke had been surrounded by adults, yet she had still managed to feel completely alone.
“You only reacted after everything became a crisis,” Bethany added. “As her parents, you should have noticed the warning signs much earlier.”
Sharra Pushes Back
Sharra finally stepped forward, refusing to accept all the blame. Her expression hardened as she looked at Bethany.
“Larry is the one Brooke was living with,” Sharra replied. “She was under his roof. It was Larry’s responsibility to keep an eye on her every day. He was the one who could see what she was doing and how she was behaving.”
Sharra insisted that Larry had been in the best position to notice Brooke’s changing behavior. She argued that if Brooke was staying with Larry, then he should have recognized that something was seriously wrong.
But Larry immediately turned toward Sharra.
Larry Turns the Blame Back
“Don’t put all of this on me,” Larry said firmly. “You were her mother. Being her mother was your responsibility too.”
The room became completely silent.
Larry continued, his voice becoming more emotional. “I may have been the one she was living with, but that doesn’t erase your responsibility as her mother. You should have called her. You should have checked on her. You should have asked her what was happening in her life. You should have made sure she knew that her mother was there for her.”
Sharra stared at him, clearly hurt by his words.
Brooke Needed More Than Rules
Bethany stepped back into the conversation. She explained that Brooke did not simply need rules, supervision, or consequences. She needed someone to listen without immediately judging her.
“Brooke needed attention,” Bethany said. “She needed understanding. She needed emotional support. She needed parents who could recognize when she was falling apart instead of waiting until everything exploded.”
Larry looked toward the floor while Sharra remained silent. For the first time, both parents seemed to understand that the argument was no longer about who was more responsible.
It was about Brooke.
The Question Nobody Expected
Bethany took a deep breath. “The saddest part is that Brooke was struggling right in front of you. She was telling you through her actions that something was wrong. She stopped going to school. She lost interest in college. She became emotionally devastated after Isaiah left. Those were warning signs.”
Larry slowly looked at Sharra. Sharra looked back at him. Neither parent had an immediate answer.
Then Larry’s phone suddenly vibrated.
He checked the screen—and his expression instantly changed. Whatever message had just arrived appeared to be connected to Brooke. Larry read it twice before quietly saying, “We need to find Brooke… right now.”
Bethany immediately stood up. Sharra froze.
But before Larry could explain what he had seen, another message appeared on his phone.
And this time, the name on the screen was someone none of them expected.
