THE FATHER RETURNS
SCENE 1 — OUTSIDE BETHANY’S HOUSE — DAY
The afternoon is bright and calm. A quiet suburban street surrounds Bethany’s house.
A car slowly pulls up outside.
MR. NEW BURGER
He steps out of the car, looking nervous but determined. He takes a deep breath and looks toward the house.
He has come for one reason — to see Bethany, his daughter.
Before he can reach the front door, another man appears.
It is LARRY.
Larry walks toward him with a suspicious expression on his face.
LARRY
What are you doing here?
Mr. New Burger stops and looks at Larry.
For a moment, neither man says anything.
MR. NEW BURGER
I came to see Bethany.
Larry crosses his arms.
LARRY
You can’t just show up here whenever you want.
Mr. New Burger’s expression becomes serious.
MR. NEW BURGER
She’s my daughter.
Larry steps closer.
LARRY
That doesn’t mean you can walk in here without permission.
Mr. New Burger looks toward the house.
He is clearly trying to stay calm.
MR. NEW BURGER
I didn’t come here to cause trouble.
LARRY
Then you should leave.
Mr. New Burger slowly turns back toward Larry.
His patience begins to disappear.
SCENE 2 — THE CONFRONTATION
The tension between the two men grows.
Larry refuses to move.
Mr. New Burger takes another step toward the house.
Larry blocks his path.
LARRY
I said you’re not going inside.
Mr. New Burger stares at him.
His voice becomes firm.
MR. NEW BURGER
And who are you to tell me that?
Larry looks angry.
LARRY
I’m the one protecting Bethany.
Mr. New Burger shakes his head.
MR. NEW BURGER
Protecting her from her own father?
Larry doesn’t answer.
Instead, he moves closer.
LARRY
You left her behind. Now you suddenly decide you want to come back?
Mr. New Burger’s face changes.
The words clearly hurt him.
MR. NEW BURGER
You don’t know the whole story.
LARRY
I know enough.
Mr. New Burger clenches his fists but tries to control his anger.
MR. NEW BURGER
I’m not here to fight you.
LARRY
Then turn around and leave.
A long silence follows.
Mr. New Burger looks toward the house again.
His eyes become emotional.
MR. NEW BURGER
I just want to see my daughter.
Larry continues standing in front of him.
LARRY
Not today.
SCENE 3 — THE ARGUMENT EXPLODES
Mr. New Burger finally loses his patience.
He steps forward.
Larry refuses to move.
The two men stand face-to-face.
MR. NEW BURGER
You don’t get to decide whether I see my daughter.
LARRY
Someone has to stop you from hurting her again.
Mr. New Burger becomes furious.
MR. NEW BURGER
I never came here to hurt her!
Larry raises his voice.
LARRY
Then why are you here?
Mr. New Burger answers without hesitation.
MR. NEW BURGER
Because she’s my daughter!
Larry pushes him back slightly.
Mr. New Burger immediately reacts.
The argument turns into a physical struggle.
They grab each other’s arms as they struggle near the driveway.
Neither man wants to back down.
SCENE 4 — BETHANY HEARS THE FIGHT
Inside the house, Bethany suddenly hears loud voices outside.
She walks toward the window.
Her expression changes when she sees Larry and her father arguing.
BETHANY
Dad?
Bethany quickly runs toward the front door.
She opens it and sees the two men.
BETHANY
Stop!
Both men turn toward her.
Bethany looks shocked.
BETHANY
What are you two doing?
Mr. New Burger steps back.
Larry also releases his grip.
The anger begins to fade.
MR. NEW BURGER
Bethany, I came here to see you.
Bethany looks at her father.
For a moment, she doesn’t know what to say.
LARRY
Bethany, I was only trying to protect you.
Bethany looks between them.
BETHANY
I didn’t ask either of you to fight.
SCENE 5 — A FATHER’S WORDS
Mr. New Burger takes a slow breath.
He looks directly at Bethany.
His voice is softer now.
MR. NEW BURGER
I know I can’t change the past.
Bethany listens carefully.
MR. NEW BURGER
But I’m still your father.
His eyes become emotional.
MR. NEW BURGER
I came here because I wanted to see my daughter.
Bethany looks down.
Larry watches quietly.
MR. NEW BURGER
I didn’t come here looking for a fight.
He turns toward Larry.
His voice becomes firm again.
MR. NEW BURGER
But I’m not going to let anyone stop me from trying to make things right with my daughter.
Larry looks at him.
LARRY
You think showing up is enough?
Mr. New Burger shakes his head.
MR. NEW BURGER
No.
He pauses.
MR. NEW BURGER
I know it isn’t enough.
Bethany slowly steps closer to her father.
SCENE 6 — THE FINAL CONFRONTATION
Larry looks at Mr. New Burger.
The anger in his face is still visible.
LARRY
You should have thought about that before.
Mr. New Burger nods.
MR. NEW BURGER
Maybe you’re right.
He looks at Bethany.
MR. NEW BURGER
But I’m here now.
Bethany’s eyes fill with emotion.
Larry remains silent.
Mr. New Burger takes one final step toward the house.
Then he stops.
MR. NEW BURGER
I’m not asking anyone to forgive me today.
He looks at Bethany.
MR. NEW BURGER
I’m only asking for a chance to talk to my daughter.
Bethany looks at Larry.
Then she looks back at her father.
The street becomes completely quiet.
Finally, Bethany speaks.
BETHANY
Dad… come inside.
Mr. New Burger looks surprised.
Larry takes a deep breath but says nothing.
Bethany opens the door wider.
Mr. New Burger slowly walks toward his daughter.
Before entering, he turns toward Larry.
MR. NEW BURGER
And Larry…
Larry looks at him.
MR. NEW BURGER
You don’t get to decide whether I can be a father.
Larry remains silent.
Mr. New Burger walks inside with Bethany.
The door slowly closes.
Larry stays outside, staring at the house.
The confrontation may be over, but the tension between them is far from finished.
