LARRY CONFRONTS DRE
A CINEMATIC SCREENPLAY
The house is unusually quiet.
Larry pulls up outside Sharra’s house and gets out of his car. His expression is serious. He looks toward the front door, already worried.
He takes a deep breath and walks inside.
Larry is there for one reason: he needs to talk to Sharra about her mother.
He looks around the living room.
Then he stops.
Dre is standing inside the house.
Larry’s expression immediately changes.
LARRY
Dre?
Dre turns around, surprised to see him.
DRE
Larry? What are you doing here?
Larry slowly steps forward.
LARRY
I came to see Sharra.
Dre looks uncomfortable.
DRE
She’s not here right now.
LARRY
Then why are you here?
Dre tries to remain calm.
Larry, however, is clearly frustrated.
LARRY
Tell me something, Dre. What are you doing in Sharra’s house?
Dre takes a moment before answering.
DRE
I came to see Sharra.
Larry gives him a suspicious look.
LARRY
You came here to see Sharra?
DRE
Yes.
LARRY
Why?
Dre sighs.
DRE
Because I needed to talk to her.
LARRY
About what?
Dre doesn’t answer immediately.
LARRY
I’m asking you a simple question. What did you come here to talk to her about?
DRE
It’s between me and Sharra.
LARRY
Not when something involving her family could put everyone in trouble.
Larry looks toward the hallway.
LARRY
I came here because I need to ask Sharra about her mother.
Dre’s expression becomes serious.
DRE
You shouldn’t get involved.
LARRY
That’s exactly what everyone keeps telling me.
He pauses.
LARRY
But nobody is telling me the truth.
Dre crosses his arms.
DRE
Maybe Sharra doesn’t want you involved.
LARRY
I’m not here to cause problems. I’m here because I need answers.
DRE
Then wait until Sharra comes back.
LARRY
So you can come here and talk to her, but I can’t?
DRE
That’s not what I said.
LARRY
It certainly sounds like it.
The tension in the room grows.
Dre tries to walk past Larry.
Larry steps aside but keeps watching him.
LARRY
Dre, I’m asking you one last time. What are you doing here?
DRE
I already told you. I came to see Sharra.
LARRY
And that’s supposed to make me feel better?
DRE
Larry, you’re getting angry over something you don’t understand.
LARRY
Then explain it to me!
DRE
There is nothing for me to explain.
Larry clenches his jaw.
LARRY
Every time something happens with Sharra, there’s another secret.
DRE
Maybe because people keep forcing themselves into her business.
LARRY
You don’t get to tell me what I can ask about.
DRE
And you don’t get to intimidate me.
Larry’s anger reaches its breaking point.
LARRY
If you came here to see Sharra, then wait for her. But don’t stand here acting like I’m the problem.
Dre shakes his head.
DRE
You’re making this bigger than it needs to be.
Larry suddenly moves toward Dre.
Dre steps back.
DRE
Larry, calm down.
LARRY
Don’t tell me to calm down!
The two men stand face-to-face.
For a moment, neither speaks.
Dre pushes Larry’s shoulder away when Larry gets too close.
Larry reacts immediately and shoves Dre backward.
Dre catches himself.
DRE
What is wrong with you?
The confrontation turns physical for a brief moment.
Dre tries to create distance.
DRE
Larry! Stop!
Larry finally steps back.
He breathes heavily.
The room falls silent.
Dre straightens his clothes and looks at Larry with disbelief.
DRE
You really came here looking for answers, and now you’ve made everything worse.
LARRY
I came here because I’m worried about Sharra.
DRE
Then talk to Sharra. Don’t take your anger out on me.
LARRY
If you know something about her mother, tell me.
Dre remains silent.
LARRY
Dre.
DRE
I’m not saying anything until I talk to Sharra.
Suddenly, the front door opens.
Sharra walks inside.
She stops immediately when she sees Larry and Dre standing across from each other.
SHARRA
What happened here?
Neither man answers.
SHARRA
Larry?
LARRY
I came to talk to you about your mother.
Sharra’s expression changes.
SHARRA
My mother?
LARRY
I need to know what’s going on.
SHARRA
Why are you two fighting?
DRE
Larry came in angry and started demanding answers.
LARRY
Because you were here when I came to talk to Sharra!
Sharra raises her hand.
SHARRA
Stop. Both of you.
The room becomes quiet.
SHARRA
If you came here because you’re worried about my mother, you should have just talked to me.
LARRY
I tried.
SHARRA
Then try again.
LARRY
And what about him?
SHARRA
Dre came here to talk to me. That’s all you needed to know.
LARRY
I don’t trust this situation.
SHARRA
Then trust me enough to let me explain.
LARRY
I shouldn’t have let my anger take over.
LARRY
But I need you to understand why I’m worried.
SHARRA
I do.
LARRY
I just don’t want anything worse to happen.
SHARRA
Then don’t make things worse yourself.
Larry turns toward the door.
LARRY
Sharra, we still need to talk about your mother.
SHARRA
We will.
Larry looks at Dre one final time.
Dre remains silent.
Larry walks outside.
Sharra watches him leave.
DRE
That could have gone very differently.
SHARRA
I know.
Outside, Larry gets into his car.
He sits behind the wheel but doesn’t start the engine.
His mind is racing.
He knows the argument with Dre was only the beginning.
Whatever is happening with Sharra’s mother is far from over.
Larry finally starts the car and drives away.
Inside the house, Sharra looks at Dre.
SHARRA
Now tell me exactly what you came here to say.
Dre’s expression becomes serious.
DRE
It’s about your mother.
Sharra freezes.
CUT TO BLACK.
