When Dave Walks In and Catches Wayne Getting Too Close to Amber!

SCENE 1 — ARRIVING TO SEE AMBER

The afternoon is quiet as Wayne arrives with Yaya. They walk toward Amber’s house, unaware that an emotional confrontation is about to unfold.

WAYNE
I just want to check on Amber. Something about her lately hasn’t seemed right.

YAYA
I noticed that too. She doesn’t seem like herself.

Wayne nods and knocks on the door. A moment later, Amber opens it. Wayne immediately notices that she looks tired and emotionally overwhelmed.

WAYNE
Amber, you okay?

Amber forces a small smile.

AMBER
Yeah… I’m fine.

Wayne studies her face. He knows she is hiding something.

SCENE 2 — YAYA MEETS AMBER AND DAVE

Yaya steps inside, and Amber welcomes her. Dave is already there. The atmosphere initially feels calm as everyone gathers together.

YAYA
Amber, it’s good to see you. How have you been?

AMBER
I’ve been trying to take things one day at a time.

Dave looks at Amber but says nothing. Wayne notices the tension between them.

WAYNE
So, what’s going on with you two? Everything good?

DAVE
We’re working through some things.

Amber looks away. Yaya begins talking with Amber, trying to keep the conversation light.

YAYA
Sometimes you just have to give things time. Not everything gets figured out in one conversation.

Amber nods.

AMBER
I know.

But her voice sounds weak. Wayne watches her carefully.

AMBER
Excuse me. I need a minute.

SCENE 3 — WAYNE FOLLOWS AMBER

Wayne waits for a few seconds before following her. He enters the hallway and sees Amber standing inside the room with her back toward him.

WAYNE
Amber?

Amber turns around. Her eyes are filled with emotion.

WAYNE
What happened? You don’t look okay.

Amber takes a deep breath.

AMBER
I’m just tired, Wayne.

WAYNE
Tired of what?

Amber looks down. For a moment, she struggles to find the words.

AMBER
I’m upset because Dave doesn’t want to marry me.

Wayne’s expression changes.

WAYNE
He told you that?

Amber nods.

AMBER
I thought we were going somewhere. I thought he wanted the same future I wanted.

A tear rolls down her cheek.

WAYNE
Amber, you shouldn’t have to beg somebody to choose you.

SCENE 4 — AMBER OPENS UP

Amber wipes her face.

AMBER
I keep asking myself what I did wrong.

WAYNE
You didn’t do anything wrong just because somebody isn’t ready to give you what you want.

Amber looks into Wayne’s eyes.

AMBER
Then why does it hurt so much?

Wayne takes another step closer.

WAYNE
Because you care.

The room becomes quiet. Amber looks away, but Wayne gently encourages her to face him.

WAYNE
You deserve somebody who makes you feel wanted, not somebody who keeps you guessing.

Amber becomes emotional again.

AMBER
I just wanted to be loved.

WAYNE
You deserve that.

For a moment, neither of them says anything. The distance between them becomes smaller.

SCENE 5 — THE MOMENT CHANGES EVERYTHING

Wayne looks at Amber.

WAYNE
Amber, I don’t want to see you hurting like this.

Amber looks at him.

AMBER
Then stay with me for a minute.

Wayne remains beside her. The emotional tension grows. Amber reaches for Wayne’s hand.

He looks down at their hands before looking back at her.

WAYNE
Amber… are you sure this is what you want?

Amber hesitates.

AMBER
I don’t know what I want anymore.

Wayne gently pulls back.

WAYNE
Then we shouldn’t make a decision while you’re hurting.

Amber looks surprised by his response.

AMBER
You really care about me?

WAYNE
Of course I care about you.

SCENE 6 — DAVE SEES EVERYTHING

Dave walks down the hallway. He stops when he reaches the doorway.

His face changes instantly.

He sees Wayne standing close to Amber. Amber quickly notices Dave and steps away from Wayne.

AMBER
Dave…

Dave says nothing.

Wayne turns around. The room suddenly becomes silent.

DAVE
What is going on here?

Amber tries to explain.

AMBER
Dave, it’s not what you think.

DAVE
Then what am I supposed to think?

Wayne steps forward.

WAYNE
She was upset. I was just talking to her.

Dave looks at Wayne.

DAVE
Talking?

Wayne remains calm.

WAYNE
Yes. She was crying because of everything happening between you two.

Dave looks at Amber.

DAVE
Is that true?

AMBER
Yes. I was upset because you told me you don’t want to marry me.

SCENE 7 — THE CONFRONTATION

Dave looks at Amber with disappointment.

DAVE
And you thought going into a room with Wayne was the answer?

Amber shakes her head.

AMBER
No. That wasn’t what I was trying to do.

DAVE
Then why was he standing that close to you?

Amber struggles to respond. Wayne steps in.

WAYNE
Because she was hurting, Dave. You should be asking why she’s hurting instead of attacking her.

Dave looks directly at Wayne.

DAVE
This doesn’t involve you.

WAYNE
It involved me when I saw somebody I care about falling apart.

Dave shakes his head.

DAVE
You crossed a line.

Wayne pauses. He knows Dave has a point.

WAYNE
Maybe I got too close. But I wasn’t trying to hurt anybody.

Amber looks between the two men.

AMBER
Stop!

Both men become silent.

AMBER
This is exactly why I’m exhausted. Everyone keeps talking about what they think I should do, but nobody is asking me what I feel.

SCENE 8 — AMBER MAKES HER FEELINGS CLEAR

Amber wipes away another tear.

AMBER
Dave, I wanted you to marry me because I believed in us.

Dave remains silent.

AMBER
When you told me you weren’t ready, it felt like everything I believed about our future disappeared.

Dave looks down.

DAVE
Amber, I never wanted to hurt you.

AMBER
But you did.

Those words leave the room completely silent.

Wayne watches Amber carefully.

AMBER
And Wayne… I appreciate that you were there for me.

She looks at him.

AMBER
But I don’t want to make another mistake because I’m hurting.

Wayne nods.

WAYNE
You’re right.

He takes a step back.

WAYNE
You need time to figure out what you really want.

SCENE 9 — YAYA RETURNS

Yaya suddenly appears in the hallway after hearing the raised voices.

YAYA
What happened?

Everyone becomes quiet. Yaya looks at Amber and immediately realizes something serious has happened.

YAYA
Amber, are you okay?

Amber nods slowly.

AMBER
I will be.

Yaya looks at Dave and Wayne.

YAYA
Then maybe everybody needs to calm down before somebody says something they can’t take back.

Dave takes a deep breath. Wayne remains silent.

Amber sits on the edge of the bed. For the first time, she realizes that her decision cannot be based on fear, loneliness, or pressure.

SCENE 10 — AN UNEXPECTED DECISION

Dave walks closer to Amber.

DAVE
Can we talk?

Amber looks at him.

AMBER
Not right now.

Dave stops.

AMBER
I need time.

Dave nods slowly.

DAVE
Okay.

Wayne looks toward Amber but doesn’t say anything. He knows she needs space.

Yaya places a comforting hand on Amber’s shoulder.

The room becomes quiet again.

Dave walks toward the door. Before leaving, he looks back at Amber.

DAVE
I never wanted things to get this complicated.

AMBER
Neither did I.

Dave leaves the room.
