BROOKE BEGS BETHANY FOR FORGIVENESS
A Cinematic Family Drama Screenplay
SCENE 1 — BETHANY’S LIVING ROOM — AFTERNOON
The house is unusually quiet. Bethany sits on the sofa, looking through some papers on the table. Her expression is serious, but there is a softness in her eyes that she rarely shows.
Brooke stands near the doorway, watching Bethany from a distance. She has been carrying guilt in her heart for some time. Every time she remembers how she treated Bethany during the argument about her grandmother, she feels ashamed.
Brooke takes a deep breath and slowly walks toward the sofa.
Bethany notices her but continues looking at the papers.
BROOKE
Bethany, can I talk to you for a minute?
BETHANY
(Looking up)
What is it, Brooke? If there’s something you want to say, I’m listening.
Brooke lowers her eyes. She struggles to find the right words. She never imagined that apologizing would be so difficult, especially to someone who has continued standing by her despite everything.
BROOKE
I know I’ve made a lot of mistakes. I know I hurt you, and I know that I said things I should never have said.
Bethany puts the papers aside and gives Brooke her full attention.
BETHANY
Brooke, I’ve heard a lot of things from you lately. Sometimes, I wonder if you understand how much your words can hurt the people who care about you.
Brooke nods, fighting back tears.
BROOKE
I understand now. I didn’t understand it before, but I do now.
She takes another step closer.
BROOKE
Bethany, please forgive me.
Bethany remains silent. Brooke looks at her, hoping to see even the smallest sign that her apology has been accepted.
SCENE 2 — BROOKE’S HEARTFELT APOLOGY
Brooke slowly sits on the edge of the sofa, leaving some space between herself and Bethany. Her hands tremble slightly as she tries to explain what has been weighing on her heart.
BROOKE
I’m sorry for everything I did to you. I’m sorry for the way I spoke to you, for the way I treated you, and for making you feel like you didn’t matter to me.
Bethany looks away for a moment. She remembers their arguments, the painful words exchanged between them, and the times Brooke refused to listen to her.
BETHANY
Do you know what hurt me the most, Brooke?
Brooke shakes her head.
BETHANY
It wasn’t just the arguments. It was the way you made me feel like I was your enemy when all I wanted was for you to understand me.
Brooke wipes a tear from her cheek.
BROOKE
I know. And I’m ashamed of that.
She turns toward Bethany, her voice growing more emotional.
BROOKE
I let my feelings control me. I listened to what I wanted to believe, and I didn’t stop to think about how you felt. I kept defending myself instead of admitting that I was wrong.
Bethany watches her carefully.
BROOKE
And when everything happened because of my grandmother, I made things even worse. I let that situation come between us, and I treated you unfairly because of it.
She pauses, taking a shaky breath.
BROOKE
I should have listened to you. I should have talked to you instead of arguing with you. But I didn’t, and I’m truly sorry.
Bethany’s expression begins to soften, although the memories still hurt.
BETHANY
Brooke, you can’t take back everything that happened just by saying you’re sorry.
BROOKE
I know. I’m not asking you to forget everything overnight. I’m only asking you to give me a chance to make things right.
SCENE 3 — BETHANY’S UNEXPECTED KINDNESS
Bethany stands and walks toward the window. She looks outside, trying to organize her thoughts.
Brooke watches her nervously. She worries that Bethany might tell her to leave or remind her of every mistake she has made.
Instead, Bethany turns around and looks at her with a mixture of disappointment and compassion.
BETHANY
Do you know why I’ve continued standing by you, Brooke?
Brooke shakes her head slowly.
BETHANY
Because despite all our disagreements, I still care about you. I haven’t forgotten the difficult moments we’ve shared, and I haven’t stopped wanting you to have a better future.
Brooke stares at her, surprised by her words.
BROOKE
After everything I’ve done, you still care about me?
BETHANY
Yes, Brooke. I do.
Bethany returns to the sofa and sits down.
BETHANY
That doesn’t mean what happened was acceptable. You hurt me, and there were moments when I didn’t know how we could move forward. But I don’t want our relationship to be nothing but arguments and resentment.
Brooke covers her mouth briefly as her emotions overwhelm her.
BROOKE
Bethany, I don’t deserve the way you’re treating me right now.
BETHANY
Maybe you don’t understand why I’m doing it. But I don’t believe that one person’s mistakes should define their entire life. What matters is whether that person is willing to learn from them.
Brooke looks down at her hands.
BROOKE
I want to learn. I want to change the way I treat you. I don’t want to keep hurting the people who care about me.
Bethany nods gently.
BETHANY
Then start by being honest with me. Even when you’re angry, even when you disagree with me, talk to me instead of pushing me away.
BROOKE
I promise I’ll try.
SCENE 4 — “PLEASE FORGIVE ME, BETHANY”
Brooke suddenly rises from the sofa and stands in front of Bethany. Her eyes are filled with tears, and her voice trembles as she speaks.
BROOKE
Bethany, please forgive me. I’m really sorry for what I did to you because of that situation with my grandmother.
She pauses, looking directly into Bethany’s eyes.
BROOKE
I was so caught up in everything that I didn’t realize how unfair I was being to you. I kept thinking about my own feelings, and I forgot that you have feelings too.
Bethany listens without interrupting.
BROOKE
And now, even after everything I’ve said and done, you’re still standing by me. You’re still giving me a chance when I thought you might have given up on me completely.
Brooke shakes her head, struggling to understand Bethany’s patience.
BROOKE
Why are you still supporting me, Bethany? After the way I treated you, why haven’t you turned your back on me?
Bethany takes a slow breath before answering.
BETHANY
Because I don’t want to see you lose your way, Brooke. We’ve had enough pain between us already. I want us to find a way to move forward.
Brooke begins to cry more openly.
BROOKE
I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.
She reaches for Bethany’s hands, gently holding them.
BROOKE
Please forgive me. I know I can’t change the past, but I want to do better from now on. I don’t want you to think that I don’t appreciate everything you’ve done for me.
Bethany looks at Brooke’s hands resting in hers.
For a moment, neither woman speaks.
Then Bethany gently squeezes Brooke’s hands.
BETHANY
Brooke, look at me.
Brooke lifts her head.
BETHANY
I hear your apology. And I’m willing to forgive you, but I need you to understand that rebuilding trust takes time. We both have to work at it.
Brooke nods quickly.
BROOKE
I understand. I won’t expect everything to become perfect today. I just want the chance to show you that I mean what I’m saying.
BETHANY
Then let your actions speak for you.
BROOKE
They will. I promise.
SCENE 5 — A NEW BEGINNING
Bethany pulls Brooke into a gentle, comforting embrace.
Brooke closes her eyes and rests her head against Bethany’s shoulder. For the first time in a long while, she feels that their relationship might have a chance to heal.
Bethany gently pats her back.
BETHANY
It’s all right, Brooke. We can’t change what happened, but we can decide what happens next.
Brooke pulls away slightly and looks at Bethany.
BROOKE
I was so afraid that you would never forgive me. I thought I’d ruined everything between us.
BETHANY
You made mistakes, Brooke. Serious mistakes. But I don’t want you to spend the rest of your life believing that you can never make things right.
Brooke wipes her tears and manages a small smile.
BROOKE
Thank you for giving me another chance. I don’t think you realize how much this means to me.
BETHANY
I hope you do something good with that chance.
BROOKE
I will. And next time something happens, I’ll talk to you. I won’t let anger or misunderstandings control the way I treat you.
Bethany smiles faintly.
BETHANY
That’s all I’m asking.
Brooke sits beside her again. The tension that once filled the room has begun to fade, replaced by a quiet sense of relief.
BROOKE
Bethany?
BETHANY
Yes?
BROOKE
I’m really grateful that you’re still here for me. I know we don’t always agree, and I know things between us haven’t been easy. But I don’t want to lose you because of my own mistakes.
Bethany reaches over and takes Brooke’s hand.
BETHANY
Then don’t let those mistakes keep happening. We can disagree without hurting each other. We can have different opinions without becoming enemies.
Brooke nods, taking her words seriously.
BROOKE
I’ll remember that.
Bethany gives her a reassuring smile.
BETHANY
Good. Now, let’s stop crying and try to have a peaceful afternoon for once.
Brooke lets out a small laugh through her remaining tears.
BROOKE
That sounds good to me.
The two share a quiet smile. Their problems haven’t magically disappeared, and the wounds of the past will take time to heal. But Brooke has finally taken responsibility for her actions, and Bethany has chosen to give her another chance.
As the afternoon sunlight falls across the living room, Brooke leans back against the sofa, feeling lighter than she has in days.
For the first time, she understands that forgiveness is not something she can demand. It is something she must respect by changing her behavior.
Bethany picks up her papers again, but this time Brooke remains beside her rather than walking away.
The silence between them no longer feels like anger.
It feels like the beginning of a new chapter.
