Brooke Finally Accepts Her Friend’s Offer—Then Divorce Papers Arrive

Brooke stood near the front door with her suitcase beside her, staring at her phone as if the decision on the screen could change her entire life.

For weeks, she had felt trapped between everyone else’s opinions. Isaiah was still the subject of arguments. Bethany had warned her repeatedly. Lynette had offered her a place to stay. And now Brooke finally had to decide whether she was going to keep living in the middle of everybody else’s drama.

Her phone suddenly buzzed.

Lynette: “Are you sure you’re ready?”

Brooke took a deep breath before typing.

“Yes. I’m ready.”

She pressed call.

Brooke: “Lynette? If your offer is still open… I want to take you up on it.”

There was a brief silence.

Lynette: “You don’t have to ask twice. If you need somewhere to breathe and figure things out, my door is open.”

Brooke closed her eyes. For the first time in a long time, she felt like she was making a decision for herself.

But she didn’t realize someone had been standing just around the corner.

Bethany Heard Everything

Bethany stepped into the hallway.

Bethany: “Wait… what did you just say?”

Brooke immediately lowered the phone.

Brooke: “Bethany…”
Bethany: “Did you just tell Lynette you’re leaving?”

Brooke looked toward her suitcase.

Brooke: “I said I was considering her offer.”
Bethany: “Considering it? You already packed!”
Brooke: “Because I need some space.”
Bethany: “Space? You think running away is going to fix everything?”

Brooke finally turned around.

Brooke: “I’m not running away. I’m trying to get away from everybody telling me what I should do!”

Bethany folded her arms.

Bethany: “I’ve been trying to protect you.”
Brooke: “Then why does it always feel like you’re controlling me?”

The room went silent.

Bethany stared at her. Then she brought up the one subject she knew would hit Brooke hardest.

Bethany: “I told you about Isaiah from day one.”
Brooke: “Don’t start that again.”
Bethany: “I knew he wasn’t worth it. I saw things you refused to see.”

The Question Brooke Had Been Afraid To Ask

Brooke stepped closer.

Brooke: “Then tell me what you knew.”

Bethany hesitated.

That hesitation said more than words could.

Brooke: “You knew something?”
Bethany: “I knew enough.”
Brooke: “Enough for what?”

Before Bethany could answer, a loud knock shook the front door.

Both women froze.

Another knock.

This time, harder.

The Envelope

Bethany walked toward the door and opened it.

A person stood outside holding a large sealed envelope.

“Are you Bethany?”
Bethany: “Yes…”
“I have documents that need to be delivered to you.”

Bethany took the envelope slowly.

Bethany: “Who are they from?”
“Everything you need to know is inside.”

Then they turned and walked away.

Bethany shut the door.

Brooke: “What is that?”
Bethany: “I don’t know.”

Bethany placed the envelope on the table.

For several seconds, neither woman moved.

Then Bethany opened it.

Her face immediately changed.

Brooke: “What is it?”

Bethany pulled out the first page. She looked at the heading.

Her mouth fell open.

“Are Those Divorce Papers?”

Brooke: “Bethany… what does it say?”

Bethany couldn’t answer.

Brooke: “What does it say?”
Bethany: “No…”

Brooke reached for the paper, but Bethany pulled it back.

Bethany: “No. You don’t understand.”
Brooke: “Then explain it!”

Bethany looked down at the documents again. Her hands began shaking.

Brooke: “Are those divorce papers?”

Bethany didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

But There Was One More Document…

Brooke stared at Bethany.

Bethany slowly sat down.

Bethany: “I thought this was over.”

Brooke looked toward the open doorway, then at her suitcase. Only minutes earlier, she had been thinking about leaving with Lynette and starting over.

Now everything had changed.

Brooke reached for the papers.

Bethany: “Don’t.”
Brooke: “Why?”
Bethany: “Because there’s something else.”

Brooke froze.

Brooke: “Something else?”

Bethany looked at the remaining pages inside the envelope.

There were more documents. Far more than Brooke expected.

And one page had a name neither of them had mentioned all day.

Brooke: “Whose name is that?”

Bethany slowly lifted the final document.

Her face went pale.

Brooke: “What happened?”
Bethany: “This isn’t just about the divorce.”
Brooke: “Then what is it about?”

Bethany turned the final page over.

And whatever she saw made her stop breathing.

TO BE CONTINUED…

Brooke had been ready to leave with Lynette. Bethany had just received the divorce papers. But neither woman knew that the final document inside that envelope could expose a secret that would change everything.
