Dan Walks In on Lauren and Wayne

Dan Walks In on Lauren and Wayne — But What He Finds Out Next Changes Everything

The Night Lauren Thought She Was in Control

Lauren had been telling herself all evening that she was in control.

She wasn’t.

The house was unusually quiet. Lauren stood near the kitchen counter, checking her phone for the third time while Wayne sat across from her, watching her nervous expression.

“Why do you keep looking at the door?” Wayne asked.

Lauren quickly put her phone down.

“I’m not.”

Wayne smiled. “You just looked at it again.”

Lauren sighed and stepped closer to him.

“I just don’t want anyone coming home early.”

That sentence changed the mood instantly.

Wayne leaned back. “Is Dan supposed to be gone?”
“He said he would be.”
“He said?”

Lauren hesitated.

“I mean… yes.”

Wayne shook his head. “Lauren, you’re acting nervous.”

“I’m nervous because you keep asking questions.”
Wayne laughed softly. “Maybe because you invited me here.”

Lauren tried not to smile, but she couldn’t help it.

For a few seconds, everything felt quiet again.

Then Wayne reached for her hand.

Lauren looked toward the hallway. “Are you sure about this?”
Wayne nodded. “Then why are you standing so close to me?”

Lauren smiled.

“Maybe I forgot to be careful.”

Dan Was Already Home

Neither of them noticed the front door opening.

Dan had come home.

He had been planning to surprise Lauren. He had even stopped on the way back to pick up something she liked.

But the moment he stepped inside, he heard voices.

Lauren’s voice.

And another voice he recognized.

Wayne.

Dan slowly moved toward the hallway. He didn’t say anything. He simply looked.

And what he saw made him stop dead.

Lauren and Wayne were standing far too close.

Lauren suddenly noticed movement.

She turned. “Dan…”

Wayne looked over his shoulder. His entire expression changed.

“Man…”
Dan raised one hand. “Don’t.”

The Awkward Confrontation

Lauren immediately stepped away from Wayne.

“Dan, wait. This isn’t what it looks like.”
Dan stared at her. “That’s funny.”
Lauren whispered, “What?”
“I haven’t even asked what it looks like yet.”

Lauren swallowed.

“You have to let me explain.”
Dan said quietly, “I came home early because I wanted to surprise you.”

Lauren’s eyes dropped.

“I didn’t expect to be the one getting surprised.”

Wayne looked uncomfortable.

“Dan, I swear—”
Dan turned toward him. “I said don’t.”

Wayne stopped.

Lauren moved closer. “Please. Just give me a chance to explain.”
Dan looked at her for several seconds. “Okay.”

Lauren looked relieved.

But Dan wasn’t finished.

“Explain why Wayne is here.”

Lauren opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

“Go ahead,” Dan said. “I’m listening.”

The Secret Gets Bigger

Wayne finally spoke. “Lauren called me.”
Dan looked at Lauren. “You called him?”

Lauren nodded slowly.

“I needed someone to talk to.”
Dan’s expression hardened. “About what?”

Lauren hesitated.

“That’s complicated.”
Dan shook his head. “No. What’s complicated is why you were hiding him from me.”

The tension became unbearable.

Then Wayne suddenly said something that made Lauren panic.

“Dan, there’s something else you need to know.”

Lauren immediately turned toward him.

“Wayne, don’t.”

Dan noticed.

“Something else?”

Wayne went quiet.

Lauren stepped between them. “Please. Not tonight.”
Dan looked from Lauren to Wayne. “Now I definitely want to know.”

Wayne took a breath.

“You think you caught us because of what you saw.”
Dan stared at him. “What else could there be?”

Wayne looked at Lauren.

Lauren’s face had gone pale.

“That isn’t even the biggest secret.”
Lauren whispered, “Wayne…”
Dan slowly turned toward his wife. “What secret?”

Lauren couldn’t answer.

Dan took another step closer. “Lauren, what aren’t you telling me?”

She looked at Wayne.

Wayne looked back at her.

And for the first time that night, Lauren realized the situation had gone far beyond an awkward moment.

The Final Warning

Dan reached for his phone. “I’m calling someone.”
Lauren’s eyes widened. “Who?”
Dan looked at her and said, “The person who can tell me exactly what happened before I walked through that door.”

Lauren suddenly grabbed his arm.

“Dan, please!”

Dan looked down at her hand.

Then back into her eyes.

“You’re going to wish you told me the truth tonight.”

He walked toward the door.

Lauren stood frozen.

Wayne didn’t move.

Neither of them knew what Dan was about to discover.

Because the next morning, Dan was going to receive a message containing ONE piece of evidence that could change the entire story.

And Lauren had no idea that someone had already sent it.
