Broken Speed — A Dramatic Story

BROKEN SPEED

A story of anger, suspicion, and consequences

Chapter 1: The Unexpected Visitor

The golden light of late afternoon filtered through the tall floor-to-ceiling windows of Dave and Amber’s modern suburban home. On any other day, the quiet hum of the neighborhood would have brought a sense of peace, but today, an invisible storm was brewing inside.

Dave was sitting at the dining table, surrounded by blueprint folders, financial ledgers, and a half-empty cup of cold coffee. He was an ambitious real estate developer, and his latest commercial project was on the brink of falling apart if he couldn’t secure an immediate emergency agreement.

Suddenly, the front door chime rang. Dave sighed, rubbed his tired eyes, and opened the door.

Standing on the porch was Victoria, Dave’s sharp and sophisticated business partner. Dressed in a tailored blazer and holding a thick leather briefcase, Victoria looked urgent.

“Dave, I’m sorry to drop by without warning,”

Victoria said rapidly, stepping inside as Dave held the door. “The investors just called from the downtown office. They found a major discrepancy in the zoning permits. If we don’t review these physical documents and meet them at the downtown hotel venue right now, the entire deal is off.”

“What? Are you serious?”

Dave asked, his stress levels spiking instantly. “Give me five minutes to get my coat and keys.”

As Victoria walked into the living room to lay the files on the table, Amber descended the stairs. Amber had been resting upstairs after a long, exhausting week. When her eyes fell on Victoria standing in their home, her expression hardened instantly.

Amber had long felt uneasy about Victoria. Victoria was smart, attractive, and spent more hours with Dave than Amber did. Although Dave had repeatedly reassured Amber that his relationship with Victoria was strictly professional, Amber’s growing insecurity constantly fed her suspicions.

“What is she doing in our house, Dave?”

Amber asked, coldness dripping from her voice as she stood at the bottom of the staircase.

Victoria turned around, offering a polite, albeit formal smile. “Hello, Amber. I apologize for the intrusion, but this is a critical work emergency. Dave and I need to double-check these papers.”

“I wasn’t talking to you,”

Amber snapped, her eyes locking onto Dave. “Dave, you promised this weekend was for us. Now your ‘business partner’ just walks in unannounced?”

Chapter 2: The Fire Ignites

“Amber, please, not now,” Dave pleaded under his breath, stepping between the two women. “This is a massive contract. If we lose this deal, months of hard work go down the drain. Victoria just came to drop off the urgent files.”

“Oh, really? Drop off files or spend another evening together?”

Amber retorted, her voice rising in pitch.

Victoria picked up her briefcase, sensing the extreme tension in the room. “Dave, I’ll head outside and wait in my car. We need to leave in ten minutes maximum, or we’ll miss the investor meeting.” She gave a brief nod and stepped out the front door, leaving the couple alone.

The moment the door clicked shut, the living room erupted into chaos.

“How dare you bring her here without telling me!”

Amber shouted, her cheeks flushing red with anger. “You respect her time more than mine! You jump whenever she calls!”

“That is completely untrue, Amber!”

Dave yelled back, throwing his hands up in frustration. “She is my business partner! We are about to lose millions of dollars if I don’t leave right now to handle this crisis! Why do you always turn professional obligations into personal attacks?”

“Because you prioritize everything else over me!”

Amber cried, her voice trembling with a mixture of rage and deep hurt. “You think I’m stupid? You treat me like an afterthought!”

Dave checked his watch; the minutes were ticking away relentlessly. The pressure was suffocating. He grabbed his wallet and car keys from the counter. “I don’t have time for this ridiculous argument, Amber. I’m going.”

“No, you’re not leaving me here like this!”

Amber yelled, marching right up to him.

“I have to go!”

Dave snapped, pushing past her toward the garage entrance.

“Then I’m coming with you!”

Amber declared firmly, her jaw set tight.

Dave stopped and stared at her in total disbelief. “What? No, Amber! I’m going to an emergency business meeting. You’re emotional, I’m stressed, and this is completely inappropriate!”

“I don’t care!” Amber stubbornly insisted, grabbing her jacket from the coat rack. “If you step foot out that door with her, I’m coming along. You are not leaving me behind to wonder what you two are doing!”

Realizing he couldn’t convince her otherwise without physically delaying his trip even further, Dave let out a growl of frustration. “Fine! Get in the car, but keep quiet!”

Chapter 3: The Highway of Rage

Dave stormed out to his black sports sedan parked in the driveway. He quickly pulled up next to Victoria’s car, rolled down his window, and called out, “Victoria, follow me in your vehicle! I’ll drive ahead!”

Victoria looked bewildered as she saw Amber aggressively slide into the passenger seat of Dave’s car, but she simply nodded and started her engine.

Dave slammed his driver-side door shut, threw the gear into reverse, and tore out of the driveway, tires screeching against the asphalt.

Inside the car, the air was thick with pure toxicity. The storm had not calmed; it had simply been compressed into the tight cabin of the moving vehicle.

Dave pressed his foot hard on the accelerator, merging onto the busy highway. Rain had just started to fall, slicking the tarmac and creating glare under the highway lights. The windshield wipers beat back and forth in a fast, rhythmic motion.

“Drive slower, Dave!”

Amber commanded, her hands gripping her seatbelt tightly as she watched the speedometer climb.

“Then stop provoking me!”

Dave shouted, his eyes glued to the road, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the steering wheel. “You brought yourself into this car! You demanded to come along on a trip that has nothing to do with you!”

“It has everything to do with me when you humiliate me in my own home!”

Amber screamed back, turning to face him. “You let Victoria talk down to me! You care more about your stupid deal than my feelings!”

“My ‘stupid deal’ pays for our mortgage, Amber! It pays for your lifestyle!”

Dave continued. “I work myself to the bone every single day, and all I get at home is constant suspicion and interrogation!”

“Because you give me reasons to suspect you!”

Amber yelled, her emotional wall finally breaking as tears spilled down her face. “You don’t talk to me anymore! You look at her like she understands you better than I do!”

“That is in your head!”

Dave roared, slamming his palm against the steering wheel. “I am sick and tired of defending myself against accusations you make up out of thin air!”

Chapter 4: Loss of Control

The argument reached a fever pitch. Both of them were screaming at the top of their lungs, blinded by extreme anger and emotional exhaustion.

Dave’s focus was completely shattered. Instead of paying attention to the slick, rain-drenched highway and the evening traffic ahead, his mind was consumed by bitter fury. His heart was hammering in his chest, his vision blurring slightly with rage.

“You never loved me!”

Amber sobbed loudly, throwing her hands in the air. “Just admit it, Dave! Admit you’d rather be with her!”

“Will you shut up for one second?!”

Dave turned his head completely away from the windshield to yell at Amber, his entire body shaking with fury. “Just shut your mouth!”

In that split second of total distraction, tragedy struck.

Ahead of them, a heavy commercial truck had slowed down drastically to avoid a stalled vehicle in the center lane.

By the time Dave snapped his head back toward the road, the bright red taillights of the massive truck were looming just feet away from the nose of his sedan.

“Dave! Watch out!”

Amber screamed in sheer terror, her hands flying to her face.

Panic hit Dave like a tidal wave. He slammed his foot down on the brake pedal with all his strength and violently yanked the steering wheel to the left to avoid colliding with the back of the truck.

It was the worst possible reaction on a wet road.

The tires instantly lost all traction on the slick asphalt. The heavy sedan spun out of control, entering a violent hydroplane. The headlights swept wildly across the highway, illuminating oncoming traffic, concrete barriers, and rainy darkness in a chaotic blur.

“Dave!”

Amber shrieked as the car spun around completely, entirely unresponsive to the wheel.

Dave fought desperately to regain control, pumping the brakes and steering into the skid, but the machine was completely governed by physics now. The car struck the center concrete divider with a deafening CRASH.

The brutal impact tore off the front bumper, sending sparks flying into the night air. The violently deflected momentum pushed the vehicle sideways, causing it to roll over onto its side, sliding upside down along the wet pavement before slamming hard into a steel light pole on the side of the highway.

The sound of shattering glass, tearing metal, and twisted iron filled the night, followed immediately by a terrifying, dead silence.

Chapter 5: The Aftermath

Smoke rose lazily from the crumpled metal frame of the upside-down sedan. The rain continued to pour, washing over the shattered glass scattered across three lanes of traffic. Behind them, cars skidded to a halt, hazard lights blinking through the heavy rain.

Victoria’s car pulled over frantically to the shoulder. She jumped out, screaming Dave and Amber’s names as she ran through the rain toward the mangled wreckage.

Inside the crushed cabin, everything was inverted.

Dave slowly regained consciousness. The heavy odor of spilled gasoline, deployed airbag chemicals, and burning rubber filled his nostrils. A sharp pain radiated through his ribs and right shoulder. Blood dripped down from a cut on his forehead, warm against his cold skin.

“Amber…”

Dave coughed, his voice barely a rasp.

He painfully turned his head toward the passenger side. The roof had partially collapsed, compressing the frame. Amber was hanging limply from her seatbelt, her head slumped sideways, injured near her hairline. Her eyes were closed, her face pale.

Panic—far worse than the anger he had felt minutes ago—flooded Dave’s system.

“Amber! Amber, please wake up!”

Dave cried out, his voice cracking with pure agony as he reached out with his trembling hand, touching her face. She groaned faintly, her chest moving with weak, shallow breaths, but she remained unconscious.

Dave looked around at the ruined interior of the car, realization crashing down upon him with crushing weight.

His phone, his business documents, his deal, Victoria—none of it mattered anymore. All the anger that had consumed him moments ago had vanished completely, leaving behind an agonizing reservoir of guilt and horror. His pride, his hot temper, and his inability to control his rage had brought them to the absolute brink of death.

Sirens began to wail in the distance, their red and blue lights flashing against the dark, rain-soaked night sky. Emergency vehicles were racing toward the scene, but for Dave and Amber, suspended upside down in the wreckage of their own making, the damage was already done.

Dave held onto Amber’s cold hand, weeping quietly into the dark, praying desperately for a second chance he knew he might never get.
