Larry Stops Charlotte at the Door

LARRY STOPS CHARLOTTE AT THE DOOR

INT. LARRY’S HOUSE – FRONT ENTRANCE – EVENING

The neighborhood is quiet.

Warm evening light settles over the front yard. The house looks peaceful from the outside, but there is an unmistakable tension waiting behind the front door.

A car slowly pulls up near the house.

CHARLOTTE steps out.

She adjusts her clothes, takes a deep breath, and looks toward the house.

She appears determined but slightly nervous.

She is here to see BETHANY.

Charlotte walks toward the front entrance.

She reaches the walkway.

Before she can knock, the front door suddenly opens.

LARRY steps outside.

He stops immediately when he sees Charlotte.

His expression changes.

The calmness disappears from his face.

His eyes narrow.

Charlotte stops walking.

For a moment, neither of them says anything.

The silence feels heavy.

CHARLOTTE
Larry…

Larry stares at her.

He does not answer.

Charlotte takes a small step forward.

Larry immediately raises his hand, stopping her.

LARRY
Don’t come any closer.
CHARLOTTE
I came to see Bethany.

Larry shakes his head.

His voice becomes firm.

LARRY
You’re not going inside.
CHARLOTTE
I just want to talk to her.
LARRY
No.

Charlotte takes a breath.

She tries to remain calm.

CHARLOTTE
Larry, I’m not here to cause a problem.

Larry gives her a cold look.

LARRY
I’ve heard that before.

Charlotte looks down for a moment.

She knows Larry is angry.

Still, she tries to explain herself.

CHARLOTTE
I only came because I needed to speak with Bethany.

Larry steps slightly closer to the entrance, making it clear that he intends to block the doorway.

LARRY
I already told you not to come to my house.
CHARLOTTE
I remember.
LARRY
Then why are you here?

Charlotte hesitates.

She looks toward the house again.

CHARLOTTE
Because Bethany and I need to talk.
LARRY
Whatever you need to say can be said somewhere else.
CHARLOTTE
Why are you making this such a big deal?

Larry’s voice becomes sharper.

LARRY
Because I warned you.
CHARLOTTE
You don’t have to speak to me like this.

Larry takes a breath, trying to control his temper.

LARRY
I’m speaking to you this way because you ignored what I told you.

Charlotte looks at the ground.

The tension between them continues to grow.

A slight breeze moves through the front yard.

The peaceful evening now feels completely different.

CHARLOTTE
I didn’t come here to argue with you.
LARRY
Then don’t argue.
CHARLOTTE
I just want five minutes with Bethany.
LARRY
No.

Charlotte’s frustration becomes more obvious.

CHARLOTTE
You can’t decide who Bethany can talk to.
LARRY
This is my house.

He pauses.

LARRY
And I’ve already told you that you’re not welcome here.

Charlotte is silent.

LARRY
I stopped you from coming here before.
CHARLOTTE
Yes.
LARRY
And I told you not to come back.
CHARLOTTE
I thought maybe things had changed.
LARRY
They haven’t.
CHARLOTTE
Can you at least tell Bethany that I came?

Larry doesn’t answer immediately.

He looks toward the house.

Then he looks back at Charlotte.

LARRY
No.
CHARLOTTE
You won’t even tell her?
LARRY
I’m not bringing this situation into my house.
CHARLOTTE
This isn’t fair.
LARRY
Maybe not.

He pauses.

LARRY
But I’m not changing my mind.
CHARLOTTE
Larry, I’m asking you respectfully.
LARRY
And I’m answering you respectfully.
CHARLOTTE
This doesn’t feel respectful.

Larry takes another breath.

His anger is obvious, but he keeps his voice controlled.

LARRY
Charlotte, listen carefully.

He points toward the street.

LARRY
Leave.

Charlotte doesn’t move.

Larry’s expression hardens.

LARRY
You need to go.
CHARLOTTE
So that’s it?
LARRY
Yes.
CHARLOTTE
You’re really refusing to let me see Bethany?
LARRY
Yes.

Charlotte looks hurt and disappointed.

She glances toward the house one last time.

For a moment, she seems to consider knocking anyway.

But Larry remains directly in front of the entrance.

Charlotte finally steps backward.

Larry watches her carefully.

CHARLOTTE
I’ll talk to Bethany another way.

Larry doesn’t respond.

Charlotte turns around.

She slowly walks down the pathway.

Larry remains at the entrance.

After a few steps, Charlotte stops and looks back.

CHARLOTTE
You didn’t have to treat me like an enemy.
LARRY
I told you what I needed to tell you.

Charlotte says nothing.

She turns away again.

Larry watches as she continues toward her car.

Charlotte reaches the vehicle.

She opens the door but pauses before getting inside.

She looks back toward the house.

The door is still open.

Larry is still standing there.

Their eyes meet from a distance.

Neither says anything.

Charlotte finally gets into her car.

The engine starts.

Larry watches the car slowly pull away.

His expression remains tense.

He closes the front door.

INT. LARRY’S HOUSE – FRONT HALL – CONTINUOUS

Larry walks inside.

He closes the door firmly.

He stands there for a moment, collecting himself.

Footsteps approach from the hallway.

BETHANY appears.

She notices Larry’s expression.

BETHANY
What happened?

Larry looks toward her.

He pauses.

LARRY
Charlotte was outside.

Bethany’s expression changes immediately.

BETHANY
Charlotte?

Larry nods.

LARRY
She came to see you.

Bethany looks toward the front door.

BETHANY
Where is she?
LARRY
She’s gone.
BETHANY
Why?

Larry exhales.

LARRY
Because I told her she couldn’t come inside.
BETHANY
Larry…

Larry raises his hand slightly.

LARRY
I already warned her before.

Bethany remains quiet.

LARRY
I don’t want her coming here anymore.
BETHANY
You could have just talked to her.

Larry looks away.

LARRY
I did talk to her.

Bethany studies his expression.

She realizes how angry he had been.

BETHANY
What did you tell her?

Larry looks back at Bethany.

LARRY
I told her to stay away from this house.

Bethany sighs.

BETHANY
And she left?
LARRY
Yes.

A long silence follows.

Bethany looks toward the window.

Outside, Charlotte’s car is already gone.

Larry walks toward the living room.

Bethany remains near the hallway, thinking about what just happened.

The evening has suddenly become much more complicated.

Outside, Charlotte drives away with a disappointed expression.

Inside, Larry stands firm in his decision.

Neither of them knows what will happen when Charlotte and Bethany finally get the chance to speak.
