PURNELL CONFRONTS LARRY — GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!

A Cinematic Family Drama Screenplay

SCENE 1 — LARRY’S LIVING ROOM — AFTERNOON

The living room is quiet, but the atmosphere inside the house feels tense. Larry stands near the sofa, looking irritated as he checks a few papers on the table. He has already had a difficult day, and the last thing he wants is another argument.

The front door opens, and Purnell walks inside. His expression is serious, and his eyes immediately search for Larry.

Larry looks up, surprised by Purnell’s sudden arrival.

LARRY

What are you doing here, Purnell? You could have called before coming over.

Purnell closes the door behind him. He does not bother to smile or exchange greetings. Instead, he walks straight toward Larry, clearly upset about something.

PURNELL

I didn’t come here to exchange greetings with you, Larry. I came because I have something important to say to you.

Larry puts the papers down and folds his arms across his chest.

LARRY

Then say whatever you have to say. I don’t have all day.

Purnell takes a deep breath, trying to control his anger. However, the moment he looks at Larry, his frustration returns.

PURNELL

Why aren’t you letting Bethany talk? What is your problem with her? Every time she tries to speak, you make her feel like she has no right to say anything in this house!

Larry’s expression changes immediately. He stares at Purnell, unable to believe that he has come into his home to question his decisions.

LARRY

Excuse me? Did you come all the way here just to lecture me about Bethany?

PURNELL

If that’s what it takes to make you understand, then yes! Someone needs to tell you that you cannot keep treating Bethany this way.

Larry lets out a frustrated laugh and shakes his head.

LARRY

You have absolutely no idea what goes on between Bethany and me. You don’t live here, and you don’t know everything that has happened between us.

PURNELL

I know enough to see that something is wrong. Bethany deserves to be heard, Larry. You cannot simply shut her down whenever you disagree with her.

Larry steps closer, his voice becoming louder.

LARRY

And who gave you the right to come into my house and tell me how to deal with my own problems?

PURNELL

I’m telling you this because somebody has to stand up for Bethany. If you won’t listen to her, perhaps you’ll listen to someone else.

Larry’s jaw tightens. He points toward Purnell, his patience rapidly disappearing.

SCENE 2 — THE ARGUMENT INTENSIFIES

Purnell walks around the coffee table and faces Larry directly. Neither man is willing to end the confrontation.

LARRY

Listen to me carefully, Purnell. You don’t get to walk into my home and start making demands. This is my house, and I will decide how I handle things here.

PURNELL

Your house doesn’t give you the right to disrespect Bethany! She has feelings, too. She has every right to speak her mind without being treated like she’s doing something wrong.

Larry raises his hands in disbelief.

LARRY

You think I don’t know that? You think I haven’t spent enough time dealing with this situation already? You come here for a few minutes, hear one side of the story, and suddenly you think you understand everything!

Purnell’s expression softens for a brief moment, but his frustration remains.

PURNELL

Then explain it to me, Larry. Tell me what Bethany has done that makes you so determined to silence her.

Larry looks away and runs a hand across his forehead. He clearly does not appreciate being questioned.

LARRY

That’s none of your business.

PURNELL

It becomes my business when I see someone being hurt and you refuse to acknowledge it.

Larry turns back toward him sharply.

LARRY

No! It does not become your business just because you decide to involve yourself. You don’t get to come here and act like you’re the only person who cares about Bethany.

Purnell shakes his head.

PURNELL

I’m not claiming to be the only person who cares about her. I’m asking you to show her some respect.

LARRY

And I’m telling you to stop interfering in my marriage!

The room falls silent for a moment. Purnell looks directly into Larry’s eyes, surprised by the intensity of his response.

PURNELL

I’m interfering because you won’t let her talk! What do you expect me to do? Stand here and pretend everything is fine?

Larry moves closer, his voice rising again.

LARRY

You expect me to stand here and listen to you tell me what I can and cannot do in my own home? Who do you think you are?

Purnell opens his mouth to respond, but Larry continues before he can speak.

LARRY

You don’t get to make decisions for me. You don’t get to tell me when Bethany can talk, and you certainly don’t get to tell me how to live my life!

SCENE 3 — LARRY LOSES HIS TEMPER

Larry begins pacing across the living room. His anger is no longer hidden. He gestures toward the door, making it clear that he wants the argument to end.

Purnell watches him, disappointed by his reaction.

PURNELL

You’re proving my point, Larry. Instead of listening to what I’m saying, you’re getting angry because someone has challenged you.

Larry stops walking and turns around.

LARRY

Don’t tell me what I’m proving! You came here looking for a fight, and now you’re acting like you’re the reasonable one.

PURNELL

I didn’t come here to fight you. I came here because I wanted you to understand that Bethany deserves better communication and respect.

LARRY

Then you should have stayed out of it!

Larry slams his hand against the table, startling Purnell. The papers shift slightly, and Larry takes another step toward him.

LARRY

Who are you to tell me whether I should let Bethany talk or not? Who gave you the authority to come into my house and question me like I’m some kind of child?

Purnell stands his ground, although he is visibly frustrated.

PURNELL

Nobody is treating you like a child, Larry. I’m asking you to behave like a husband who is willing to listen to his wife.

Larry laughs bitterly.

LARRY

Oh, now you’re going to teach me how to be a husband? Is that what this is about? You think you can walk into my home and tell me how to run my marriage?

PURNELL

I’m telling you that shutting Bethany down isn’t going to solve anything.

LARRY

And I’m telling you that you have no idea what you’re talking about!

Larry points toward the front door again.

LARRY

You keep acting like you know what’s best for Bethany, but you don’t know what happens between us when nobody else is around.

Purnell pauses, taking in Larry’s words.

PURNELL

Then stop making excuses and start having an honest conversation with her.

Larry’s face hardens.

LARRY

That’s enough!

His voice echoes through the living room.

SCENE 4 — GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!

Larry walks toward the front door and opens it forcefully. He turns to face Purnell, his expression filled with anger and resentment.

Purnell remains beside the coffee table, unwilling to believe that Larry is throwing him out for defending Bethany.

LARRY

I’ve had enough of you coming into my home and telling me what to do. You think you can interfere in my life whenever you want, but that ends today.

Purnell looks at the open door and then back at Larry.

PURNELL

So that’s it? You’re throwing me out because I told you to let Bethany speak?

LARRY

I’m throwing you out because you don’t know your place! You came into my house, disrespected me, and started telling me how to handle my own marriage.

PURNELL

I haven’t disrespected you, Larry. I’ve told you the truth, and you don’t want to hear it.

Larry’s hands tighten at his sides. He takes a breath, trying to contain his frustration, but his voice remains sharp.

LARRY

I don’t care what you think about me! You don’t have the right to come here and make my life more difficult.

He points outside.

LARRY

Why are you trying to ruin my home? Why can’t you mind your own business and leave me alone? I have enough problems without you coming here and adding to them!

Purnell’s expression changes. For the first time, he seems genuinely hurt by Larry’s accusation.

PURNELL

I’m not trying to ruin your home. I’m trying to stop things from getting worse between you and Bethany.

Larry shakes his head impatiently.

LARRY

I don’t need your help! I didn’t ask you to come here, and I certainly didn’t ask you to tell me how to treat my wife.

Purnell takes a step toward the door, but he stops before leaving.

PURNELL

One day, Larry, you’re going to realize that refusing to listen doesn’t make you right. Bethany deserves to be heard, whether you agree with her or not.

Larry stares at him angrily.

LARRY

Get out of my house, Purnell! And don’t come back here thinking you can tell me what to do!

Purnell looks at Larry for a long moment, disappointed that their conversation has ended this way.

PURNELL

Fine. I’ll leave. But remember what I said. You cannot solve every problem by getting angry and shutting people out.

Purnell walks through the open doorway.

Larry watches him leave, his breathing heavy with frustration. As soon as Purnell steps outside, Larry slams the door shut.

SCENE 5 — LARRY IS LEFT ALONE

The sound of the closing door fills the quiet house.

Larry stands motionless for several seconds, staring at the door. His anger is still there, but beneath it lies a deeper frustration. He feels that Purnell has crossed a boundary and challenged his authority inside his own home.

He returns to the living room and drops onto the sofa.

LARRY

(To himself)

Everybody thinks they know what’s best for me. Nobody understands what I’m dealing with. Now Purnell thinks he can come here and tell me how to handle my own marriage.

He rubs his forehead and looks toward the hallway.

Larry knows that the argument with Purnell will not simply disappear. If Purnell is willing to confront him so openly, he may continue defending Bethany in the future.

Meanwhile, Purnell walks away from the house, still upset about what happened. He had hoped Larry would listen to reason, but instead, their disagreement has become another source of conflict.

Purnell pauses outside and looks back at the house.

PURNELL

(To himself)

I tried to talk to him calmly, but he wouldn’t listen. Bethany deserves to have her voice heard. Someone has to make him understand that.

He turns and walks away.

Inside the house, Larry remains alone with his thoughts. He is convinced that Purnell had no right to interfere, yet the argument has left him more unsettled than he wants to admit.

The confrontation has ended, but the tension surrounding Larry and Bethany remains unresolved.

FADE OUT.
