THE PARTY
A Secret In The Next Room
The Unexpected Arrival
Evening settles over Dave’s elegant house as music fills the rooms. Guests move between conversations, laughter, and drinks beneath the warm lights.
Amber stands near the center of the living room, holding a glass in one hand. She looks calm until the front door opens.
Wayne walks inside with a confident smile.
WAYNE“Good evening, everyone. Sorry I’m late.”
Several guests greet him warmly. Wayne shakes hands and smiles as he moves through the room.
Amber watches him from across the room. Her expression immediately changes.
AMBER“Why did he have to come?”
She quickly looks away and pretends to be interested in another conversation.
Eyes Across The Room
Wayne spends several minutes greeting the other guests. He laughs, exchanges stories, and appears completely relaxed.
But his attention repeatedly drifts toward Dave’s daughter.
She stands with a group of guests, listening to their conversation. Every now and then, she smiles and adds something to the discussion.
Wayne watches her from across the room.
GUEST“So, Wayne, how have you been?”
WAYNE“I’ve been good. Very busy lately.”
The guest continues talking, but Wayne’s eyes once again move toward Dave’s daughter.
Amber notices.
The Quiet Escape
After some time, Dave’s daughter quietly excuses herself from the group.
She walks toward the hallway, leaving the noise of the party behind.
Wayne notices immediately.
GUEST“Wayne?”
WAYNE“Sorry. What were you saying?”
The guest looks slightly confused.
GUEST“I was asking if you wanted another drink.”
WAYNE“No, thank you.”
Wayne waits a moment before quietly following her toward the hallway.
Behind The Closed Door
The music becomes quieter as Wayne walks down the hallway.
He stops outside a room where the door is slightly open.
Inside, Dave’s daughter stands near the window, enjoying a rare moment of silence.
Wayne gently knocks.
DAVE’S DAUGHTER“Wayne?”
WAYNE“Sorry. I didn’t mean to startle you.”
DAVE’S DAUGHTER“You didn’t.”
Wayne steps into the room but keeps a respectful distance.
WAYNE“You disappeared from the party.”
DAVE’S DAUGHTER“I just needed some quiet.”
A Difficult Conversation
For a moment, neither of them speaks.
The distant music from the party echoes through the walls.
WAYNE“You seemed uncomfortable tonight.”
DAVE’S DAUGHTER“I’m fine.”
WAYNE“You don’t look fine.”
She looks toward him, trying to understand what he really means.
DAVE’S DAUGHTER“Maybe I just wanted to get away from everyone for a few minutes.”
WAYNE“I understand.”
The room falls silent again.
Too Close To Ignore
Their conversation becomes quieter.
Wayne takes a small step forward.
Dave’s daughter remains where she is.
They are now standing face-to-face, close enough for the silence between them to feel heavier than the music outside.
DAVE’S DAUGHTER“This is getting strange.”
WAYNE“I know.”
DAVE’S DAUGHTER“Then why are you still here?”
Wayne pauses.
WAYNE“Because I wanted to talk to you.”
She looks directly into his eyes.
DAVE’S DAUGHTER“About what?”
Wayne takes a breath, searching for the right words.
Back To The Party
The tension remains for another moment.
DAVE’S DAUGHTER“People are going to misunderstand this.”
WAYNE“Maybe.”
DAVE’S DAUGHTER“Then we shouldn’t give them a reason.”
Wayne slowly steps backward, creating some distance between them.
WAYNE“You’re right.”
They decide to return to the party.
They walk down the hallway together, but neither says another word.
When they reach the living room, they enter separately.
Amber immediately notices Wayne.
AMBER“Where were you?”
WAYNE“I was just talking.”
Amber studies his expression.
AMBER“With whom?”
Wayne doesn’t answer immediately.
Across the room, Dave’s daughter quietly looks toward him.
Their eyes meet for only a second.
Neither smiles.
Neither speaks.
The party continues as though nothing has happened.
But beneath the laughter and music, something has changed.
