JADEN REFUSES TO LET BROOKE STAY
SCENE 1 — OUTSIDE LYNETTE’S HOUSE — EVENING
The sun is slowly disappearing behind the houses as evening settles over the neighborhood.
A car turns into the driveway and comes to a slow stop.
Lynette sits behind the wheel. Brooke is beside her, staring silently through the passenger window.
Brooke looks exhausted. Her face shows how emotionally drained she has become.
LYNETTE
You don’t have to worry about anything right now.
BROOKE
Are you really sure I can stay?
LYNETTE
Yes. You’re not going back somewhere you don’t feel safe or wanted.
Brooke takes a slow breath and looks down at her hands.
Lynette turns off the engine and looks over at her.
LYNETTE
Come on. Let’s go inside.
Brooke opens the passenger door and steps out.
Lynette walks around to the back seat and grabs Brooke’s bag.
Brooke follows her toward the front door.
Neither woman realizes that someone inside the house has already seen Brooke arrive.
Jaden stands near the window.
The moment he recognizes Brooke, his expression changes.
His eyes widen before frustration quickly takes over.
JADEN
What is she doing here?
Jaden steps away from the window and walks quickly toward the living room.
SCENE 2 — LYNETTE’S HOUSE — LIVING ROOM — CONTINUOUS
Lynette places Brooke’s bag beside the couch.
Brooke remains near the doorway, unsure where to stand.
LYNETTE
You can make yourself comfortable.
BROOKE
Thank you, Lynette. I really appreciate this.
Suddenly, footsteps echo from the hallway.
Jaden enters the living room and immediately looks at Brooke.
JADEN
Mom.
LYNETTE
Yes?
JADEN
What is she doing here?
Brooke lowers her eyes.
Lynette remains calm.
LYNETTE
Jaden, calm down.
JADEN
No. I want an answer.
JADEN
Why is Brooke in our house?
Lynette takes a breath before answering.
LYNETTE
Because Brooke is staying here with us.
Jaden freezes. The entire room suddenly becomes silent.
JADEN
What did you just say?
LYNETTE
You heard me.
JADEN
She’s staying here?
LYNETTE
Yes.
JADEN
No, Mom.
JADEN
I’m saying no.
Brooke takes a nervous step backward.
SCENE 3 — THE ARGUMENT BEGINS
JADEN
You didn’t even talk to me before making this decision.
LYNETTE
I don’t need permission to help someone who needs a safe place.
JADEN
This is my home too!
LYNETTE
And I understand that.
JADEN
Then why would you bring her here?
LYNETTE
Because she needs somewhere safe to stay.
JADEN
There are other places she could go.
BROOKE
I never asked Lynette to bring me here.
JADEN
Then you shouldn’t have come.
Lynette steps between Jaden and Brooke before the argument can get worse.
LYNETTE
Jaden, that’s enough.
JADEN
No, Mom. You don’t understand how I feel about this.
LYNETTE
Then explain yourself without yelling.
JADEN
I don’t want Brooke living here.
LYNETTE
You don’t have to agree with me. But you will respect her.
JADEN
I don’t respect this decision.
SCENE 4 — BROOKE FEELS UNWELCOME
Brooke looks toward the front door.
She slowly reaches for her bag.
BROOKE
Maybe I should just leave.
LYNETTE
No.
BROOKE
I don’t want to create problems between you and your son.
LYNETTE
You’re not creating these problems.
LYNETTE
You’re staying here.
JADEN
Mom, listen to what you’re saying.
JADEN
You’re choosing her over me.
LYNETTE
This isn’t about choosing one person over another.
JADEN
That’s exactly how it feels.
Lynette walks toward Jaden and lowers her voice, hoping he will finally listen.
LYNETTE
Jaden, you’re my son. Nothing is going to change that.
LYNETTE
But being my son doesn’t mean I have to turn away someone who needs help.
SCENE 5 — JADEN CROSSES THE LINE
Jaden moves closer to Brooke.
Lynette immediately notices the change in his behavior.
LYNETTE
Jaden, don’t.
JADEN
You need to leave.
BROOKE
I’m not trying to cause any problems.
JADEN
Then leave.
Brooke steps backward.
Jaden reaches forward and pushes her.
Brooke stumbles back, shocked by what just happened.
LYNETTE
JADEN!
Lynette immediately rushes toward Brooke and checks on her.
LYNETTE
Are you hurt?
BROOKE
I’m okay.
LYNETTE
What were you thinking?
JADEN
I told her I don’t want her here!
LYNETTE
That does not give you the right to put your hands on her!
LYNETTE
You will never push someone in this house again.
Jaden clenches his jaw, but Lynette refuses to back down.
JADEN
I’m still not going to let her stay here.
LYNETTE
You don’t get to make that decision.
JADEN
Then what am I supposed to do?
LYNETTE
You can respect my decision or remove yourself from the situation.
JADEN
You’re actually serious?
LYNETTE
Completely serious.
SCENE 6 — THE ULTIMATUM
JADEN
So you’re really letting her stay?
LYNETTE
Yes.
JADEN
Even after everything that happened?
LYNETTE
Especially after what just happened.
Brooke quietly wipes a tear from her cheek.
BROOKE
Lynette, maybe I really should go.
LYNETTE
No, Brooke.
LYNETTE
You don’t have to run away every time someone becomes angry with you.
BROOKE
I’m just tired of everything.
LYNETTE
I know you are.
Lynette gently pulls Brooke into a brief hug.
JADEN
I’m not okay with any of this.
LYNETTE
You don’t have to be okay with it tonight.
LYNETTE
But you do have to respect the rules of this house.
Jaden stares at his mother for a few seconds.
He says nothing and walks away.
SCENE 7 — A NEW BEGINNING
The house slowly becomes quiet again.
LYNETTE
Come on.
Brooke nods and follows Lynette toward the guest room.
Lynette opens the door.
The room is clean, peaceful, and ready for Brooke.
A bed is neatly made, and a small lamp sits beside it.
BROOKE
You really prepared this room for me?
LYNETTE
I wanted you to have somewhere peaceful to rest.
BROOKE
Thank you.
LYNETTE
You don’t have to thank me.
Outside the room, Jaden stands silently in the hallway.
He hears every word.
His expression slowly changes.
He looks toward Brooke’s room, and for a brief moment, the anger disappears from his face.
But the conflict inside him remains.
Jaden turns around and slowly walks away.
LYNETTE
Whatever happens next, we’re going to figure it out together.
BROOKE
I hope so.
LYNETTE
You have a place here now.
