WHEN EVERYONE LEFT SHAYLA
THE NIGHT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
What happens when the woman who once meant everything to everyone suddenly becomes someone nobody remembers?
Shayla had spent years being there for the people she loved. But Anthony had built a new life with Redlinsha, Dave had found happiness with Amber, and Wayne and Dinisha had their own worlds. Everyone seemed to have someone. Everyone except Shayla.
Then, on the night she finally realized how alone she had become, an unexpected stranger arrived. He would save her life, but what he revealed afterward would change everything she believed about the people who had abandoned her.
SCENE 1 — SHAYLA’S EMPTY HOUSE
Late evening. Rain taps against the windows. Shayla sits alone on the couch, staring at her phone. Her screen is filled with old photographs: Anthony smiling beside her, Dave laughing with the group, Wayne making everyone laugh, and Amber and Dinisha standing together at a party.
SHAYLA
I remember when this house was full of laughter. Anthony used to call me whenever something happened. Dave would come over without even asking. Wayne always knew how to make a bad day better.
SHAYLA
And now? Nobody even asks if I’m okay.
She scrolls through her messages. Her last conversation with Anthony is weeks old. Her messages to Dave have received no reply. She locks her phone and places it beside her.
SHAYLA
I wasn’t asking anyone to give up their happiness for me. I just thought that, after everything we shared, somebody would remember me.
SCENE 2 — ANTHONY’S NEW LIFE
Across town, Anthony sits at a restaurant with Redlinsha. They laugh together as they discuss their future. Redlinsha notices Anthony checking his phone.
REDLINSHA
Is something wrong?
ANTHONY
No. Just checking a few things.
REDLINSHA
You seem distracted tonight. Whatever happened in your past, you don’t have to carry all of it into our future.
ANTHONY
You’re right. I want to focus on us.
He puts his phone away. For a moment, he remembers Shayla and how she once stood beside him during difficult times.
REDLINSHA
What is it?
ANTHONY
Nothing. Just an old memory.
He forces a smile and returns to dinner, unaware that Shayla is sitting alone, wondering whether their friendship ever meant as much to him as it meant to her.
SCENE 3 — DAVE AND AMBER
The following evening, Dave and Amber sit together in their living room. Amber notices Shayla’s name in an old group chat.
AMBER
Dave, have you spoken to Shayla recently?
DAVE
Not really. Why?
AMBER
I was just thinking about her. We haven’t seen her in a long time. Being busy and forgetting someone are two different things.
DAVE
Everyone has been busy. Things changed, Amber. People moved on.
AMBER
That doesn’t mean we have to pretend the past never happened. If you care about her, start by asking how she is.
Dave opens their old conversation and begins typing a reply. Then he stops, realizing that silence can hurt someone more than an argument ever could.
SCENE 4 — WAYNE’S MISSED CALL
Wayne sits in his car outside a building. His phone lights up with Shayla’s name. He sees her missed call.
WAYNE
Shayla called me?
He checks the time and starts the engine.
WAYNE
I’ll call her back when I get home.
Hours later, Wayne arrives home exhausted. He sees the missed call again but becomes distracted by another notification. He puts his phone down. Across town, Shayla waits for that call. It never comes.
SCENE 5 — DINISHA’S WARNING
Dinisha meets Amber at a small café the next afternoon.
DINISHA
Have you heard anything from Shayla?
AMBER
Not directly. I asked Dave about her, and he seemed worried.
DINISHA
I have a strange feeling that she’s not doing well. Shayla was always the one who kept everyone connected. When someone was upset, she checked on them.
AMBER
We kept assuming someone else was checking on her.
DINISHA
That’s exactly the problem. I’m calling her tonight. If she doesn’t answer, we’ll find out whether she’s okay.
AMBER
I’ll come with you.
They exchange a serious look, unaware of how urgently their decision is needed.
SCENE 6 — THE BREAKING POINT
Night returns. Shayla sits beside her bedroom window. The rain has stopped, but the sky remains dark.
SHAYLA
I used to believe that no matter what happened, we would always find our way back to one another.
SHAYLA
Anthony has Redlinsha. Dave has Amber. Wayne has his own life. Dinisha has moved forward. And me? I’m still waiting for people who probably don’t even think about me anymore.
Her loneliness becomes overwhelming. In a moment of crisis, she makes a dangerous decision. The scene fades away from the room, leaving only the unanswered messages on her phone.
Time passes. Suddenly, a loud knock echoes through the house.
UNKNOWN MAN (O.S.)
Hello? Is anybody inside?
There is no answer. The stranger knocks again and realizes something is terribly wrong. He immediately calls for emergency assistance and gets Shayla to the hospital.
SCENE 7 — THE HOSPITAL
Bright hospital lights. A doctor steps out of the treatment room. The stranger stands immediately.
UNKNOWN MAN
Doctor, please tell me she’s going to be okay.
DOCTOR
We’ve begun treating her. She’s receiving the care she needs, but the next few hours are important.
UNKNOWN MAN
Can I see her?
DOCTOR
Not yet. Please wait until the medical team says it’s safe.
The stranger sits down, holding his head in his hands. He looks at Shayla’s phone, which he brought with her belongings. The screen lights up: one missed call from Dinisha, two messages from Amber, and an old conversation with Dave.
UNKNOWN MAN
So many people know her. How did she end up alone?
Hours later, the doctor returns.
DOCTOR
She’s responding to treatment. She isn’t out of danger completely, but we’re hopeful.
UNKNOWN MAN
Thank you, Doctor.
For the first time that night, he allows himself to breathe.
SCENE 8 — A MESSAGE THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING
The next morning, Dinisha calls Shayla again. This time, a hospital staff member answers.
DINISHA
Hello? Where is Shayla? Why isn’t she answering?
HOSPITAL STAFF MEMBER
I’m sorry. Shayla is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
DINISHA
What? What happened to her?
Dinisha immediately calls Amber.
DINISHA
Amber, we need to go to the hospital. Something has happened to Shayla!
AMBER
What? Is she okay?
DINISHA
I don’t know. They said she’s receiving treatment.
Amber grabs her bag. Dinisha calls Dave, who immediately contacts Anthony.
DAVE
Anthony, listen carefully. Shayla is in the hospital.
ANTHONY
What? Why? What happened?
DAVE
I don’t know everything yet. But we need to get there.
ANTHONY
I’m coming.
For the first time in a long while, everyone is heading toward the same place. But none of them is prepared for what awaits them.
SCENE 9 — THE PEOPLE WHO CAME TOO LATE
The hospital corridor is crowded with anxious faces. Amber stands beside Dinisha. Dave walks back and forth. Wayne sits silently, staring at the floor. Anthony arrives with Redlinsha.
ANTHONY
Where is she? Has anyone spoken to the doctor?
DINISHA
She’s still being treated.
DAVE
We should have checked on her sooner.
WAYNE
I saw her missed call. I kept telling myself I’d call her later. I never thought something like this could happen.
AMBER
We all thought someone else was there for her.
DINISHA
But nobody actually made sure.
REDLINSHA
Anthony, you said she was doing fine. Did you actually ask her?
Anthony lowers his head. The doctor finally approaches the group.
DOCTOR
She’s stable enough for us to continue monitoring her condition. She needs rest, careful medical attention, and support.
DAVE
Can we see her?
DOCTOR
A few people at a time, if she is ready and agrees.
ANTHONY
I just want her to know she isn’t alone.
The words sound different now that he finally understands what those words should have meant before.
SCENE 10 — THE STRANGER IN THE CORNER
Amber notices a man standing near the far end of the corridor. He looks exhausted and keeps watching the door to Shayla’s room.
AMBER
Excuse me. Are you here for Shayla?
UNKNOWN MAN
Yes.
DAVE
Are you a relative?
UNKNOWN MAN
No. I’m someone who found her when she needed help.
ANTHONY
You saved her?
UNKNOWN MAN
I called for help and got her to the hospital as quickly as I could. The medical team is the reason she’s receiving treatment now.
DINISHA
We owe you so much. Please tell us your name.
UNKNOWN MAN
My name isn’t important right now.
WAYNE
It is to us. You were there when none of us was.
UNKNOWN MAN
Were you really not there?
The question leaves the corridor silent.
UNKNOWN MAN
I’m not here to judge any of you. But when I found Shayla, I saw someone who believed she had nobody left.
AMBER
We never wanted her to feel that way.
UNKNOWN MAN
Sometimes people get hurt even when nobody intends to hurt them. If you care about her, don’t show up only when you’re afraid of losing her.
SCENE 11 — SHAYLA OPENS HER EYES
Later that afternoon, Shayla slowly opens her eyes. The room is quiet except for the steady sounds of hospital equipment.
DOCTOR
Shayla, you’re in the hospital. You’re receiving treatment, and you’re safe with us right now.
SHAYLA
Why am I still here?
DOCTOR
Because your life matters, Shayla. You deserve help through whatever brought you to this moment.
SHAYLA
Nobody wanted me around anymore.
DOCTOR
I can’t tell you what everyone else was thinking. But you don’t have to face these feelings alone. We’re going to help you, one step at a time.
Shayla turns her face toward the window, tears slipping down her cheeks.
SHAYLA
I was tired of waiting for people to remember me.
DOCTOR
You shouldn’t have had to carry all that pain by yourself.
Outside, Anthony, Dave, Amber, Dinisha, and Wayne wait for news. The nurse explains that Shayla’s wishes must come first and she needs time to rest.
