THE NIGHT BETHANY RAN AWAY
AN EMOTIONAL ROMANTIC DRAMA

HOOK — ONE NIGHT, TWO MEN, AND A TERRIBLE MISTAKE

Bethany ran through the rain with tears streaming down her face, her trembling hands clutching her phone. Behind her was a marriage that had slowly destroyed her heart. Ahead of her was the one man she had promised herself she would never return to.

Her ex-boyfriend’s house.

She had nowhere else to go.

But Bethany had no idea that the moment she stepped inside that house, she would set off a chain of events that could destroy three lives forever.

And when Larry discovered where his wife had gone, he would do something that even Bethany could never have imagined.

Something that would turn one desperate night into a nightmare.

SCENE 1 — INT. LARRY AND BETHANY’S HOUSE — EVENING

The house was unusually quiet. Bethany stood beside the bedroom window, staring at the rain falling outside. Her eyes were swollen from crying, and her hands trembled as she packed a few clothes into a small bag.

She had spent the entire day trying to hold herself together. But Larry’s cruel words kept echoing inside her mind.

LARRY

You should be grateful that I married you, Bethany. Not every man would accept a woman like you.

Bethany closed her eyes, fighting back fresh tears.

BETHANY

I have given you everything, Larry. My love, my trust, my entire life. What more do you want from me?

LARRY

I want you to understand your place in this house.

BETHANY

Your place? I’m your wife, Larry. I thought a wife was supposed to be treated with love and respect.

LARRY

Love? Respect? Don’t make me laugh. You should learn something from Sharra. She never questioned me like you do.

Bethany froze. Sharra. His ex-wife. The woman Larry had once claimed was nothing more than a painful chapter in his past.

BETHANY

Why do you keep comparing me to her? If you still love her, then why did you marry me?

LARRY

Because I thought you were different. But now I realize that I made a mistake.

Bethany stared at him in disbelief. For a moment, she couldn’t even breathe.

BETHANY

A mistake?

LARRY

You heard me.

A tear rolled down Bethany’s cheek.

BETHANY

Then perhaps the biggest mistake was believing that you would ever love me the way I loved you.

Larry turned away as if her pain meant nothing. That was the moment something inside Bethany finally broke.

She picked up her bag, wiped her tears, and walked toward the door.

LARRY

Where do you think you’re going?

BETHANY

Somewhere I don’t have to beg for kindness.

She opened the door and stepped into the rain. Larry watched her leave, his jaw tightening. He assumed she would return in a few hours.

He had no idea that his wife was heading toward the one person he feared losing her to most.

SCENE 2 — EXT. ALEX’S HOUSE — NIGHT

Bethany stood outside a beautiful house at the end of a quiet street. Rain soaked her hair and clothes. Her fingers hovered over the doorbell.

She hadn’t seen Alex in months. Alex had been her first love, the man who had once promised to stand beside her through every storm. Their relationship had ended painfully, but a part of Bethany had never stopped remembering the safety she felt in his arms.

She pressed the doorbell. Footsteps approached from inside. The door opened.

Alex stood there wearing a simple black shirt, his expression changing the instant he recognized her. For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

ALEX

Bethany?

She lowered her head, unable to meet his gaze. Alex stepped forward, astonishment slowly turning into happiness.

ALEX

Oh my God. Bethany, you’ve come! After all this time, you’re finally here.

He smiled, almost as if he couldn’t believe she was standing in front of him. His happiness faded when he noticed her tears.

ALEX

Hey. What happened to you?

BETHANY

Please, Alex. Can I come inside?

ALEX

Of course. You don’t have to ask me that.

He took her bag and guided her into the house. As the door closed behind them, Bethany finally allowed herself to breathe.

For the first time that night, she felt that she wasn’t completely alone. But the relief wouldn’t last long.

SCENE 3 — INT. ALEX’S LIVING ROOM — NIGHT

Alex brought Bethany a towel and a warm blanket. She sat on the couch, staring at her hands. He sat beside her, leaving enough space between them to avoid making her uncomfortable.

ALEX

Bethany, look at me. Tell me what happened. Why are you here in the middle of the night, crying like this?

Bethany pressed the blanket against her chest.

BETHANY

Larry humiliated me again.

ALEX

What did he do?

BETHANY

He compared me to Sharra. Again. He told me that marrying me was a mistake. He spoke to me as if I were nothing more than a burden in his life.

Her voice broke.

BETHANY

I tried so hard to make that marriage work, Alex. I changed myself for him. I ignored my own feelings. Every time he hurt me, I told myself that perhaps tomorrow he would become the man I married.

She covered her face and began to cry.

BETHANY

But he never changes.

Alex looked at her with a mixture of anger and heartbreak.

ALEX

I warned you that he wasn’t the right man for you.

BETHANY

Please don’t say that. I already know I made a mistake.

ALEX

I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you. I just hate seeing you suffer like this.

BETHANY

Sometimes I wonder whether anyone will ever love me without making me feel worthless.

Alex stared at her. His voice became quieter.

ALEX

I never thought you were worthless. Not for one second.

Bethany’s eyes filled with tears again. For a moment, the room seemed to disappear around them. All the memories they had tried to bury returned at once.

Alex remembered the girl who used to laugh at his terrible jokes. Bethany remembered the man who once waited outside her university in the rain simply because she had told him she was having a bad day.

They had loved each other once. Perhaps that was why the pain between them had never completely disappeared.

BETHANY

Why did everything have to become so complicated between us?

ALEX

Because we made choices we thought were right. And sometimes, the choices we make are the ones that hurt us the most.

He reached for her hand. Bethany didn’t pull away.

SCENE 4 — INT. ALEX’S LIVING ROOM — MOMENTS LATER

Bethany’s tears continued falling. Alex gently brushed a tear from her cheek.

ALEX

You don’t have to pretend to be strong here.

Bethany looked at him.

ALEX

You can cry. You can talk. You can sit here all night if you need to. I’m not going to throw you out.

A fragile smile appeared on Bethany’s face.

BETHANY

You still know exactly what to say to me.

ALEX

Maybe because I’ve never forgotten how to listen to you.

Bethany leaned forward and suddenly wrapped her arms around him. Alex was startled for a moment, but then he embraced her.

He held her gently as she cried against his shoulder. Alex closed his eyes. He had spent months convincing himself that he was over her. He had told his friends that he was happy she had moved on. He had even tried dating other women.

But now, with Bethany in his arms, he realized how much of his heart still belonged to her.

ALEX

Bethany, are you sure you’re okay being here?

BETHANY

I don’t know what I’m going to do tomorrow. I don’t know whether my marriage can survive another day. But tonight, I just needed someone who wouldn’t make me feel like I was nothing.

ALEX

You were never nothing to me.

Bethany stared into his eyes. Their faces were close. Neither of them moved away. Alex hesitated, giving her time to pull back.

Instead, Bethany rested her forehead against his. For one brief moment, neither thought about Larry, the marriage, or the consequences waiting outside.

Alex kissed her forehead. Bethany closed her eyes. Then she turned toward him, and their lips met in a quiet, emotional kiss.

It wasn’t a kiss filled with happiness. It was filled with memories, loneliness, regret, and the desperate desire to feel loved again.

Alex held her close. Bethany wrapped her arms around him. Neither noticed the passing minutes. Neither heard the distant sound of a car approaching the house.

But someone was watching. And that someone was about to change everything.

SCENE 5 — INT. LARRY AND BETHANY’S HOUSE — SAME NIGHT

Larry entered the bedroom and noticed Bethany’s bag was missing. His eyes narrowed. He checked the bathroom, the kitchen, and the living room.

Nothing.

He pulled out his phone and called her. The phone rang. And rang. No answer. Larry called again. Still nothing.

LARRY

Where the hell have you gone, Bethany?

He walked toward the window and looked outside. A sudden thought crossed his mind.

Alex.

Bethany’s ex-boyfriend. Larry had never liked Alex. Even before marrying Bethany, he had always suspected that some part of her heart still belonged to the man she had loved before him.

He grabbed his car keys.

LARRY

No. She wouldn’t dare.

But the more he thought about it, the angrier he became. He imagined Bethany crying in Alex’s arms. He imagined Alex comforting her, holding her, and telling her everything Larry had failed to say.

His imagination quickly turned into jealousy.

LARRY

If she’s there, I’ll make sure she regrets it.

He stormed out of the house and drove into the rainy night.

Larry’s car stopped across the s
