Destiny stands near the couch, holding a few clothes in her hands. Duchess watches her carefully from across the room.

Destiny looks tired and frustrated.

DUCHESS
From today, things are going to be different.

Destiny slowly looks up.

DESTINY
What do you mean?

Duchess folds her arms.

DUCHESS
You need to start working part-time.

Destiny’s expression immediately changes.

DESTINY
What? Mom, seriously?

DUCHESS
Yes. You’re old enough to start helping yourself.

Destiny shakes her head, already getting angry.

DESTINY
I came here because I needed help, not because I wanted another job.

DUCHESS
And I’m telling you that if you’re staying here, you’re going to have responsibilities.

Destiny grabs her phone from the table and puts it inside her bag.

DESTINY
Fine.

DUCHESS
Fine what?

Destiny starts picking up her clothes.

DESTINY
If you don’t want me here, I’ll go back to Atlanta.

SCENE 2 — DESTINY PACKS HER BAG

Destiny walks quickly into her room.

She throws clothes onto the bed.

Her hands are shaking with anger.

DESTINY
I’m not staying somewhere I’m not wanted.

Duchess follows her into the doorway.

DUCHESS
Destiny, stop being dramatic.

Destiny turns around.

DESTINY
Dramatic? You just told me I have to work part-time like I’m some stranger living in your house!

DUCHESS
Because you need to learn responsibility.

DESTINY
I can learn responsibility in Atlanta!

Duchess sighs.

DUCHESS
You’re not going anywhere.

Destiny freezes.

DESTINY
Excuse me?

DUCHESS
I said you are not going back to Atlanta.

Destiny looks shocked.

DESTINY
You can’t tell me where I can go.

Destiny slowly sits on the edge of the bed.

DESTINY
So you’d really let me struggle?

Duchess remains silent.

DESTINY
I thought you were my mom.

SCENE 3 — THE ARGUMENT GETS WORSE

Destiny stands again and closes her suitcase with force.

DESTINY
I’m going back to Atlanta anyway.

Duchess steps in front of the bedroom door.

DUCHESS
No, you’re not.

DESTINY
Move.

DUCHESS
Destiny, listen to me.

DESTINY
No! You listen to me!

Destiny points toward herself.

DESTINY
Every time I try to make a decision for myself, somebody tells me what I can and cannot do.

DUCHESS
Because you keep making decisions without thinking about the consequences.

DESTINY
At least they’re my consequences!

Destiny’s eyes fill with tears.

DESTINY
You really mean that?

DUCHESS
Every word.

SCENE 4 — DESTINY MAKES A CALL

Destiny walks into the hallway and pulls out her phone.

Her hands tremble as she scrolls through her contacts.

She finally presses CALL.

DESTINY
Come on… please answer.

The call connects.

DESTINY
I need to come back to Atlanta.

Her voice immediately cracks.

DESTINY
No, I’m serious. I can’t stay here anymore.

Duchess hears her talking but says nothing.

DESTINY
I’ll figure everything out when I get there.

Suddenly, Destiny’s expression changes.

DESTINY
Wait… what?

She slowly looks toward Duchess.

DESTINY
You already knew about that?

Duchess looks confused.

DUCHESS
Knew about what?

Destiny ends the call.

She stares at her mother.

DESTINY
Who told you?

SCENE 5 — THE SECRET

Duchess follows Destiny toward the front door.

DUCHESS
Destiny, stop.

Destiny turns around.

DESTINY
I know something is going on.

DUCHESS
What?

DESTINY
You’re not trying to keep me here because of a job.

Duchess goes silent.

Destiny studies her mother’s face.

DESTINY
You’re scared of something.

Duchess looks away.

DESTINY
What did you do, Mom?

Duchess finally looks at her.
