SCENE 1 — LARRY’S LIVING ROOM — EVENING
The house is quiet, but tension fills the living room. Larry stands beside the sofa, looking at Brooke with a serious expression. Brooke stands near the doorway, holding her car keys in one hand.
She has been thinking about Philadelphia for days. She wants to leave, but she knows Larry will never agree.
LARRY
Brooke, I already told you that you are not going to Philadelphia. I don’t want you taking your car and driving all the way there.
BROOKE
Larry, it’s my car. I should be able to decide where I want to go.
Larry shakes his head, refusing to consider her argument.
LARRY
Not while you’re living under my roof. You think you can do whatever you want without listening to anybody?
BROOKE
I’m not asking you to agree with everything I do. I’m asking you to let me make my own decisions.
LARRY
And my answer is no. You’re staying here, and that’s the end of this conversation.
Brooke looks down at her keys. Her eyes fill with frustration, but she refuses to argue any further.
BROOKE
Fine, Larry. If that’s what you want to believe, then there’s nothing else for me to say.
She turns and walks toward the hallway.
Larry watches her leave, convinced that the argument is over. He doesn’t realize Brooke has already made up her mind.
SCENE 2 — BROOKE’S BEDROOM — LATE EVENING
Brooke sits on the edge of her bed, staring at her phone. Her car keys rest beside her.
Outside, the evening light has disappeared. The house has grown quieter, and everyone seems occupied with their own activities.
Brooke opens the map on her phone and checks the route to Philadelphia.
She takes a deep breath.
BROOKE
I can’t keep waiting for Larry to give me permission to live my life. Every time I want to do something, he finds another reason to stop me.
She stands and walks toward her closet. She takes a few clothes and places them inside a travel bag.
Her movements are slow and careful. She doesn’t want anyone to hear her preparing to leave.
Brooke looks around her bedroom, remembering the times she tried to explain herself to Larry.
BROOKE
I know he’s going to be angry when he finds out. But if I tell him I’m leaving, he’ll try to stop me again.
Her phone lights up with a message. Brooke glances at the screen but doesn’t respond.
She checks the time, then looks toward the bedroom door.
BROOKE
I’m going to Philadelphia tonight. I don’t know what will happen when I get there, but I need to make this decision for myself.
She picks up her bag and places it beside the door.
For a moment, she hesitates. Then she grabs her car keys.
SCENE 3 — LARRY’S HOUSE — NIGHT
The house is almost completely silent.
Larry sits in the living room, looking through some papers. He has no idea what Brooke is planning.
Brooke quietly opens her bedroom door and steps into the hallway. She pauses when she hears Larry moving in the living room.
Her heart sinks. She waits until the house becomes quiet again.
Holding her bag, she carefully makes her way toward the front door.
She looks back at the hallway one last time.
BROOKE
I’m sorry, but I can’t stay here and keep fighting about every decision I make.
She opens the front door and slips outside without telling Larry or anyone else.
The door closes softly behind her.
Brooke stands on the porch for a moment, looking into the dark driveway. Her car is parked just a short distance away.
She wipes her eyes and walks toward it.
SCENE 4 — THE DRIVEWAY — NIGHT
Brooke reaches her car and places her travel bag on the passenger seat.
She opens the driver’s door and sits behind the steering wheel.
For several seconds, she doesn’t start the engine.
She looks at the house through the windshield, wondering whether Larry will notice she’s gone.
Her phone rests in the cup holder. She considers calling someone, but she decides against it.
BROOKE
If I call anybody, they’ll ask questions. And if Larry finds out before I leave, he’ll try to bring me back.
She fastens her seat belt and places both hands on the steering wheel.
Her expression changes from nervousness to determination.
BROOKE
Philadelphia. That’s where I’m going.
She starts the engine.
The headlights illuminate the driveway as she slowly backs out of her parking space.
Brooke checks the road, shifts into drive, and pulls away from the house.
Nobody comes outside to stop her.
Within moments, her car disappears down the street.
Larry remains inside, completely unaware that Brooke has left.
SCENE 5 — THE HIGHWAY TO PHILADELPHIA — NIGHT
The highway stretches into the darkness.
Brooke drives along the road, keeping her attention on the traffic and the signs ahead. Streetlights pass across the windshield as she continues toward Philadelphia.
Her travel bag sits beside her, and her phone lights up occasionally with notifications.
She glances at the screen when she stops at a safe place, but she doesn’t call anyone.
The decision to leave suddenly feels heavier now that she’s actually on the road.
BROOKE
I wanted to leave because I was tired of being told no. But now I’m wondering what will happen when Larry wakes up and realizes I’m not home.
She looks ahead and takes a steady breath.
BROOKE
He’s going to be furious. He’ll probably say I disrespected him and broke his trust.
She pauses, thinking about the argument in the living room.
BROOKE
But he never asked why Philadelphia mattered so much to me. He only cared about stopping me from going.
Brooke continues driving, determined to reach her destination safely.
She knows that leaving without telling anyone will have consequences. Still, she feels that staying would mean surrendering another decision to Larry.
The road signs begin directing her toward the Philadelphia area.
Brooke tightens her grip on the steering wheel.
BROOKE
I’m not going to turn around now. I’ve already made my choice.
Her car continues through the night.
SCENE 6 — LARRY’S LIVING ROOM — LATE NIGHT
Back at the house, Larry finishes looking through his papers and glances toward the hallway.
He notices that Brooke hasn’t come back downstairs.
At first, he doesn’t think much of it.
He stands and walks toward her bedroom, intending to check whether she’s still awake.
He knocks on the door.
LARRY
Brooke? Are you still up?
There is no answer.
Larry opens the door and looks inside.
The room is empty.
He notices that some clothes are missing from the closet. His expression changes as he looks around.
LARRY
What is going on here?
He walks farther into the room and notices that Brooke’s travel bag is gone.
Suddenly, he understands that something is wrong.
LARRY
No. Don’t tell me she actually left.
He rushes toward the front door and opens it.
The driveway is empty.
Brooke’s car is nowhere to be seen.
Larry stares at the empty space where her vehicle had been parked.
LARRY
Brooke!
His voice echoes through the quiet night, but nobody answers.
He takes out his phone and calls her.
The call rings, but Brooke doesn’t answer.
Larry tries again, becoming increasingly frustrated.
LARRY
You have got to be kidding me. She actually took her car and left without telling me!
He walks back inside, pacing across the living room.
LARRY
I told her she wasn’t going to Philadelphia. How could she do this behind my back?
His anger grows, but underneath it is a growing fear that he doesn’t want to admit.
SCENE 7 — THE ROAD INTO PHILADELPHIA — NIGHT
Brooke approaches the outskirts of Philadelphia.
The city lights shine in the distance, and traffic begins to increase as she gets closer to her destination.
Her phone rings again.
She looks at the caller’s name on the screen.
LARRY
Brooke’s expression falls. She knows exactly why he is calling.
She lets the call ring without answering, then returns her attention to the road.
BROOKE
I knew he’d find out eventually. I just didn’t want another argument before I could leave.
She takes a deep breath.
BROOKE
Tomorrow, I’ll have to face him. I know that. But tonight, I need to figure out what comes next.
She follows the directions on her phone toward her destination in Philadelphia.
Meanwhile, Larry stands in his living room, staring at his phone after another unanswered call.
He is furious that Brooke ignored his instructions, but he also realizes he has no idea where she is or what she intends to do.
LARRY
You better call me back, Brooke. This isn’t over.
The scene returns to Brooke’s car as she continues toward the city.
She doesn’t know how Larry will react when they finally speak. She only knows that her decision has changed everything between them.
The headlights move across the road as Philadelphia draws closer.
