Brooke Stands Up for Bethany
Larry turns a serious request into a joke—until Brooke’s anger leaves him with nothing to say.
1. A Request That Matters
The tension began in the living room, where Larry was sitting comfortably while Bethany tried to discuss a serious family matter with him. Sharra’s mother was facing legal trouble, and Sharra believed there might still be a way to help her. She kept asking Larry to speak with Bethany and encourage her to approach her father, Mr. Burger, about taking on the case.
Sharra knew that asking Mr. Burger for help would not be easy. Still, she hoped he might listen if Bethany explained the situation and asked him to consider representing her mother. To Sharra, this was not a small favor or an ordinary family conversation. It could be the chance her mother desperately needed.
Bethany understood how much the request meant to Sharra. She had not promised that her father would agree, but she was willing to try. Before she could explain her thoughts, however, Larry began treating the entire idea as if it were a joke.
2. Larry Starts Making Fun of Her
Larry leaned back and laughed. Instead of considering the request, he questioned whether Bethany could persuade her father at all. He repeatedly suggested that the task was beyond her abilities, making it sound as though she would embarrass herself by even asking.
Bethany tried to remain calm. She wanted Larry to understand that she was not claiming to have all the answers. She simply wanted the opportunity to ask her father for help. But every time she tried to make that point, Larry interrupted with another sarcastic comment.
His laughter made the situation worse. What should have been a conversation about helping someone in trouble was turning into a humiliating exchange. Bethany felt as if Larry had already decided that her words did not matter and that there was no reason to take her seriously.
3. Bethany Feels Disrespected
At first, Bethany held back her frustration. She did not want a disagreement to distract everyone from Sharra’s mother and the help she might need. Yet Larry continued to mock her, acting as though she had no influence with her own father and no chance of making a difference.
Each remark made Bethany feel smaller in the room. It was not simply that Larry doubted the plan; it was the way he expressed that doubt. He spoke as if Bethany’s effort was foolish before she had even tried. She began to wonder whether Larry respected her judgment at all.
Brooke had been listening nearby. She noticed Bethany’s expression change and realized that Larry’s jokes were no longer harmless teasing. Brooke believed that even if the request was difficult, Bethany deserved to be heard rather than ridiculed. She was growing increasingly upset with her father’s behavior.
4. Brooke Finally Speaks Up
Brooke could no longer sit quietly. She turned toward Larry and challenged him for making fun of Bethany while she was trying to discuss something important.
Larry looked at Brooke, surprised by how directly she had confronted him. He tried to brush her off, saying that she did not understand how difficult it would be to convince Mr. Burger to take the case. He insisted that he was only being realistic.
But Brooke was not convinced. She stood up and moved toward him, her voice rising as her frustration finally spilled over. She reminded him that there was a difference between being realistic and humiliating someone. Bethany had not claimed that success was guaranteed; she had only wanted to try.
5. The Argument Reaches Its Breaking Point
“You act like Bethany’s opinion means nothing,” Brooke said angrily. “Just because you think something is difficult does not mean you get to laugh at her. Why can’t you support her for once instead of putting her down?”
The room fell quiet for a moment. Bethany looked at Brooke, surprised and grateful that someone had finally said what she had been struggling to express. She had felt alone during Larry’s teasing, but Brooke’s words made it clear that she was not the only one who saw how unfair the situation had become.
Larry started to respond, perhaps ready with another joke, but Brooke cut him off before he could turn the conversation around. She told him that Sharra’s mother’s situation was serious and that Bethany deserved the chance to speak to her father without being made to feel foolish.
For once, Larry had no quick comeback. His smile faded, and he fell silent. The confidence with which he had mocked Bethany only moments earlier was gone. He seemed to realize that his words had hurt her and had angered Brooke far more than he expected.
6. Silence—and an Unanswered Question
Bethany took a breath and looked directly at Larry. “I don’t know whether my father will agree,” she said, “but I can at least ask him. I needed support, not jokes at my expense.” Her words were calmer than Brooke’s, but they carried their own weight.
Larry remained quiet. No one knew whether his silence meant that he understood the damage he had caused or whether he was simply waiting for the argument to end. Brooke stayed beside Bethany, unwilling to let her father dismiss the matter again.
Sharra’s request was still unresolved, and Mr. Burger had not yet been asked to take the case. But the conversation had changed something inside the room. Bethany had found someone willing to stand up for her, and Larry had been forced to face the consequences of treating a serious concern as a joke.
