Brooke’s Great Escape
Bethany Risks Everything to Help Brooke Reach Isaiah in Philly
SCENE 1: BROOKE’S BEDROOM — A SECRET PLAN
The house is unusually quiet. Brooke stands beside an open suitcase, desperately packing her clothes. She knows Larry will do everything in his power to stop her if he discovers her plan.
Bethany stands near the bedroom door, watching Brooke with a worried expression. Despite the risks, she has decided to help Brooke pursue her future.
BETHANY
Brooke, how much longer do you need? You have to finish packing before Larry realizes what we’re doing.
BROOKE
I’m almost done. I just need to put a few more things in my bag. Bethany, are you sure you’re going to help me get out of this house?
BETHANY
Yes, I’m sure. I know Larry doesn’t want you going to Philadelphia, but I don’t think keeping you here against your wishes is going to solve anything.
BROOKE
I honestly didn’t expect you to help me. I thought you would take Larry’s side and tell me that I needed to stay.
BETHANY
I’ve been thinking about everything that’s happened. You’re old enough to have feelings, dreams, and plans for your future. I might not agree with every decision you make, but I don’t want you to feel like you have no choice.
BROOKE
All I want is a chance to see Isaiah. I want to talk to him face-to-face and figure out what our future is going to look like. I’m tired of everybody telling me what I can and cannot do.
BETHANY
Then finish packing. But listen to me carefully. If Larry finds out that I helped you, he’s going to be furious with me.
BROOKE
I know, and I’m sorry you’re getting involved in this.
BETHANY
Don’t apologize. Just make sure you understand what you’re doing. Philadelphia isn’t right around the corner, and once you leave, things could become complicated.
BROOKE
I’ve thought about it, Bethany. I’m ready.
Bethany nods slowly and helps Brooke arrange the remaining clothes. Neither woman realizes how quickly their secret plan is about to fall apart.
SCENE 2: THE BEDROOM — BROOKE GETS READY TO LEAVE
A few minutes later, Brooke finally zips up her suitcase. She checks her phone, imagining the moment she will see Isaiah again.
BROOKE
I just hope Isaiah is happy when he sees me. I’ve been thinking about this moment for so long.
BETHANY
If he cares about you the way you say he does, he’ll at least listen to what you have to say. But remember, you need to talk things through instead of expecting everything to work out immediately.
BROOKE
I understand. I just need to get there.
Bethany carefully opens the bedroom door. The hallway appears empty.
BETHANY
All right. Take your bag and head downstairs. I’ll make sure you have a chance to get outside.
BROOKE
Thank you. You have no idea how much this means to me.
BETHANY
Just go before we change our minds.
Brooke begins walking toward the staircase, pulling her suitcase behind her. Bethany follows at a short distance, her heart pounding with every step.
SCENE 3: THE KITCHEN — LARRY DISCOVERS THE PLAN
Downstairs, Larry is in the kitchen when a faint sound near the main entrance catches his attention. He stops what he is doing and looks toward the front door.
To his surprise, the lock is no longer secured. Larry immediately walks toward the entrance.
LARRY
What’s going on? Who left the front door unlocked?
Larry reaches for the handle and opens the main door. The sight waiting outside leaves him stunned.
Brooke is standing near the entrance with her suitcase, preparing to leave the house. His shock quickly turns into anger.
LARRY
BROOKE! Where do you think you’re going?
BROOKE
Larry, please. Just let me explain.
LARRY
Explain what? Why you’re standing outside this house with your entire suitcase? Were you planning to leave without telling anybody?
BROOKE
I’m going to Philadelphia.
LARRY IS STUNNED — BROOKE’S SECRET PLAN HAS BEEN EXPOSED!
LARRY
Philadelphia? Are you serious right now? After everything I’ve told you, you still think you’re going to walk out of this house and go there?
BROOKE
I’m not trying to disrespect you. I just want to see Isaiah. I need to figure things out for myself.
LARRY
You are not going anywhere until we finish this conversation. Put that suitcase down and come back inside.
BROOKE
I can’t keep living like this. Every time I try to make a decision, somebody tries to stop me.
LARRY
You think running away is going to fix everything? You haven’t even considered what could happen when you get to Philadelphia!
BROOKE
At least I’ll have a chance to find out for myself!
Their voices grow louder. Upstairs, Bethany hears Larry shouting Brooke’s name. Her face goes pale as she realizes that the secret plan has been discovered.
SCENE 4: THE MAIN DOOR — BETHANY MAKES HER MOVE
Bethany rushes out of the bedroom and hurries down the stairs. At the entrance, she sees Larry blocking Brooke’s way while Brooke desperately holds the handle of her suitcase.
LARRY
Bethany! Come over here and tell Brooke that she’s not going to Philadelphia!
Bethany stops beside them. Larry expects his wife to agree with him, but she makes a sudden decision.
As Larry turns toward her, Bethany pushes him off balance, and he falls to the floor.
LARRY
BETHANY! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
Bethany stands over him, shocked by how quickly everything has happened. Then she turns toward Brooke.
BETHANY
Brooke, GO! Get out of here!
BROOKE
Bethany!
BETHANY
Don’t stand there! Take your bag and go!
LARRY
You pushed me to the floor? You actually helped her sneak out of this house, and now you’re helping her escape right in front of me?
BETHANY
I know you’re angry, Larry, but I’m not going to stand here and watch you force Brooke to stay when she has already made up her mind.
LARRY
You had no right to interfere! She’s leaving this house to go after Isaiah, and you think that’s a good idea?
BETHANY
I didn’t say it was going to be easy. I’m saying she deserves a chance to make her own decision.
Brooke looks between them, torn between staying to help Bethany and following the escape plan.
BETHANY
Brooke, please! Go now! I’ll deal with Larry!
BROOKE
I’m sorry! I won’t forget what you’ve done for me!
BETHANY
Just be careful!
Brooke grabs her suitcase and hurries away from the entrance. She glances back at Bethany one last time before disappearing from view.
BROOKE IS FINALLY OUT OF THE HOUSE — BUT LARRY IS FURIOUS!
SCENE 5: INSIDE THE HOUSE — LARRY CONFRONTS BETHANY
The front entrance falls silent. Larry gets back on his feet and turns toward Bethany, his expression filled with anger and disappointment.
LARRY
I cannot believe you did this to me. You helped Brooke pack her things, you helped her get to the front door, and then you pushed me down so she could leave!
BETHANY
I knew you would be upset, but I couldn’t keep pretending that everything was fine.
LARRY
You deliberately went behind my back!
BETHANY
Because I knew you wouldn’t let her go if I told you the truth!
LARRY
And now she’s gone! She’s going to Philadelphia to see Isaiah, and you have absolutely no idea what could happen next!
BETHANY
I know I made a big decision. But I thought Brooke needed someone to listen to her instead of constantly telling her no.
LARRY
You should have talked to me!
BETHANY
Would you have listened?
Larry falls silent for a moment. Bethany looks at him, waiting for an answer, but his frustration prevents him from responding immediately.
BETHANY
Larry, I wasn’t trying to destroy this family. I was trying to help Brooke get a chance to decide what she wants for her future.
LARRY
This isn’t over, Bethany. Not by a long shot.
Bethany swallows nervously. She knows Larry is serious, and she cannot predict what will happen when he discovers just how far she was willing to go to help Brooke.
Meanwhile, Brooke is moving closer to Philadelphia and the reunion she has been dreaming about. But will Isaiah welcome her with open arms? And will Larry forgive Bethany for helping her leave?
