Unusual Morning Silence

The morning started quietly, but Larry could already sense that something was wrong. Brooke had an important college day ahead of her, yet she was still in bed and showed no intention of getting up.

Larry walked toward Brooke’s room and gently knocked on the door before entering. He calmly reminded her that it was time to get ready for college.

“Brooke, are you ready to get up and get ready for college?” Larry asked.

Brooke barely moved. She pulled the blanket closer and remained quiet for a few moments.

“I don’t want to go today,” she finally said.

The Growing Doubt

Larry looked at her with concern. He had expected Brooke to be tired, but he had not expected her to completely refuse to go.

“Why don’t you want to go?” he asked.

Brooke sat up slowly and looked frustrated. She admitted that she simply did not feel like going and that she was beginning to question whether college was really what she wanted.

Larry did not immediately get angry. Instead, he tried to understand what was going through her mind. He reminded Brooke that everyone has difficult mornings and moments when they do not feel motivated, but that did not mean she should give up on something important.

“You have to think about your future,” Larry told her. “You cannot make an important decision based only on how you feel this morning.”

Brooke listened, but she still did not seem convinced.

“I understand what you’re saying, but I really don’t want to go,” she replied.

Seeking Perspective

Larry realized that simply talking was not going to change her mind. He left the room and went to speak with Bethany. He explained that Brooke was refusing to get ready for college and that he was becoming increasingly worried about her attitude.

Bethany understood Larry’s concern. She knew Brooke was going through a major transition in her life, and she also knew that forcing her without understanding the real problem could make things worse.

Larry returned to Brooke’s room and gave her another opportunity to explain herself.

“Is there something happening at college that you’re not telling us?” he asked.

Brooke hesitated. For a moment, it seemed as though she might finally open up, but she quickly changed her mind and insisted that she simply did not want to go.

Consequences and Conflict

Larry became more serious.

“Brooke, I’m not asking you to love every part of college. I’m asking you to give yourself a chance,” he said.

Brooke crossed her arms and told him that she had already made up her mind.

That was the moment Larry decided he needed to take a stronger approach. He told Brooke that if she was going to refuse her responsibilities, there would have to be consequences. He took her phone and explained that she would not get it back until she started taking college seriously.

Brooke was shocked. “You’re taking my phone?” she asked.

“Yes,” Larry replied. “Until you understand how important your responsibilities are.”

Brooke became angry. She argued that Larry was treating her like a child and that taking her phone would not make her want to attend college.

Brooke stormed back into her room, frustrated by what had happened. She felt that Larry was not listening to her, while Larry believed he was trying to protect her from making a decision she might regret later.

The Decision to Step Forward

Bethany watched the situation carefully. She knew both Larry and Brooke had valid feelings, but she also knew that the conflict could become much bigger if neither side was willing to compromise.

After spending some time alone, Brooke began thinking about everything Larry had said. She realized that he was not simply trying to punish her. He was worried about her future and wanted her to take her education seriously.

Eventually, Brooke came downstairs. Larry was still sitting with Bethany when she walked into the room.

“I’ll go,” Brooke finally said.

Larry looked at her but did not celebrate the decision. “Are you going because you want to, or because you want your phone back?” he asked.

Brooke paused before answering. “I’m going because I know I need to give college a chance.”

An Unfolding Journey

Larry nodded. He reminded her that going to college was only the beginning. What mattered was how seriously she approached the opportunity.

Brooke still was not completely happy about the situation, but she agreed to get ready.

As she walked upstairs to prepare for college, Bethany looked at Larry and told him that Brooke might need more than rules. She might need someone willing to listen to what she was really going through.

Larry understood that the morning had revealed a bigger issue than simply refusing to get out of bed.

And as Brooke finally prepared to leave for college, none of them realized that this was only the beginning of a much bigger story.
